The National Rugby League Thread

I just saw Rudd watching the Broncos game.

He thinks the comeback is on, for sure.

Fair shake of the sauce bottle, mate!

Well, Orford cost the Raiders the win and Ferguson lost them the game.

Orford knocks on from the scrum with under a minute left in the game and the Titans then tie up the game and cost the Raiders the win. He is still off the pace and while I'd still back him to come good, time will be fast running out.

As for Ferguson, he has proved to be a fantastic buy and the form back of the side. He had a fantastic game all night and had to fill in at fullback after 20 mins when Dugan went off injured. He dropped a sitter and from the scrum the Titans kicked the golden point. For his effort in this game and the first four rounds he didn't deserve to be the one that lost them the game.

In the week the coaches should hammer the team in tackling and defense because they let in soft, soft tries tonight. The forwards need a kick up the bum because some of them aren't standing up.

Dugan looks like he might be out for a while but that doesn't matter. The team needs to tighten its defence, man up in the forwards and the half needs to come good. Still over 20 weeks to go and I still believe the Raiders will come together as a team and make an impact on the competition.

I said on twitter before the Eels game - "I'm glad that the Parramatta Eels never signed Matt Orford, as Orford as slow as an old ox. #OxfordSlow"

But I'm happy with the Eels winning. Can relax now, and think about something else with regards to DS9.

So now everyone has won a game and no one has not lost a game. It was an interesting round.

Just saw the news stories online about Orford retaining his spot, not surprised at all. I don't think Furner was ever going to drop him after only three rounds. Hopefully the Panthers of the two weeks ago return and play the Raiders into form.

Edit: Carney just avoids gaol (again). It is going to be a long six months that will have the higher up in the Roosters seriously sweating.

Disappointing round of rugby league as far as I am concerned for the Eels, but the Storm were far better. If I had the money I could have been down there, but glad I didn't go. But would have been elsewhere today.

Didn't see or hear the Raiders game this weekend. All I've heard was it was a disaster and that wet paper bags have felt insulted by being compared to to the Raiders' defence.

It will be interesting to see what changes are made for the next round. One I'm sure of is that Milne will return to the side and take back the fullback jersey he wore for the first 3 rounds.

Ok, something is bugging us here at our place...

Flicking around between football games tonight, we saw the hilarious last twenty minutes of the first half of the Canterbury/Parra game. If every game in the NRL was like this, the stadiums would be packed every week

Anyway, just on half time, the Canterbury player (Barber?) went over in the corner, and was awarded a try despite taking out the corner post clearly with his elbow before grounding it. The odious Gould didn't hesitate to call it a try, so what happened?
Did they change the rule, or what? Nobody here knows...help please?

The corner post doesn't count as out when you're carrying the ball, so if you kick the ball into the post it's out as soon as it touches the post. The rule changed last year.

Only seeing bits of the game now, the Eels imploded for what I've seen. Watched the Titans v Tigers and the Tigers were poo in the second half. The Titans fought back well and deserved that win...even though that means the Raiders are at the bottom of the table now.

It still counts as out if you kick/throw/knock/drop the ball into the posts, so it does serve a purpose, apart from being a marker that this line is the try line.

Edit: Another week and another poor effort in defence by the Raiders. At least the Matt Orford knockers can't hide behind him as an excuse for the Raiders' loss. Not that the Cowboys are easy to beat up in NQ, but the first half effort was no where good enough. Furner and his staff need to hammer in the defensive lessons harder into the squad.

Also for sponsors (LOL). Seriously they still serve a function. More here

Friday's game was as far as I am concerned as an Eels supporter was bad. Well except for the first 20 minutes. It's gonna be a long season. Not sure how long Hayne will get for that headbutt, but he was provoked after a high tackle. Moi Moi needs to start and not some off the bench.

And Ennis is a grub.

Another inept display by the Raiders. I don't know what is going on down there. The ref is getting a mauling by the punters on the radio and he did make a shocker that cost the Raiders a certain try, but the Raiders were poor for most of the game. The better side won and to deny that is just silly.

Just heard Mullens call the Raiders a "great side", he must be living in the 90s! The 2011 side is moving towards one of the worst sides in its history rather than one of the better sides.

I do have to laugh when after the games the opposition refer to the Raiders' forwards as "one of the best in the comp". The Canberra forwards are easily the most overrated in the comp, they have done next to nothing so far this season, even in round 1 the Sharks' forwards were more dominant. They are all bark and no bite.

My faith in the Raiders ability to make the top 8 is now seriously shaken. They went from 2nd last to 7th in the back half of the season, much like the Eels did the year before but I wonder if they'll now have a disappointing season as the Eels did last year after showing such promise in the previous season.

^ There was so much potential there for the Raiders. I tipped them to make the top 8.

I was quite happy with the Eels win yesterday. There is still loads more improvement in the team.

Just listened to the first half of the Raiders v Tigers game and I out. It has been a pathetic, pathetic display. I don't know what the Raiders ware doing during the week, are they even training? They're probably spending all their time in Fyshwick instead of working on their defence.

The Kangaroos will be announced today and the City and Country sides tomorrow, it will be interesting to see who's in the national side, and as a byproduct who ends up in the C&C sides.

I'm going to listen to the Dragons v Eels instead now. The less I hear of how rubbish the Raiders are going the better.

Edit: 49 - 12 in the end. Pathetic, absolutely pathetic. If I were at the stadium I'd probably boo the Raiders off the field. Next to none of the players would deserve to make any rep sides with the way they are playing.

^ It seems my team is also getting a lesson in rugby league at the moment. Been checking the scores, and currently 30 nil to the Dragons. Probably only Tim Mannah and Jarryd Hayne will make rep teams. And maybe a Kiwi or two. At least we have the bye next week.

Shillington is the only Raider to make the Kangaroos...that must be based on loyalty because he has been rubbish for the Raiders so far this year and I can think of 3 or 4 other props who should be on the bench before him.

Sounds like Furner might step down as assistant coach for the Roos. He has asked to be let go but Sheens has given him 24 hrs to mull over the decision.

Apart from that the Roos seem an okay side. Haven't heard of the Kiwis yet.

As for C&C, Lahrs (bench prop), Thompson (centre), and Dugan (fullback) from the Raiders have made the Country side.

^ I remember him smashing through many Storm players at the Grand Final in 2009.

I think it was good that Hayne missed out on the Australian squad. Tweet earlier about recruitment problems with the Eels. Disappointing so far.

Australia vs NZ...Australia won but only really because NZ decided that completing sets was optional in the last quarter of the match. With all their simple errors they didn't deserve to win but it was far from a spectacular or comprehensive victory for the Roos.

As for City v Country, I can't say I'm a big supporter of the match. This was the first game I've watched since...2000, I think. Best thing I saw was that Lahrs played a blinder, so I'm hoping he takes it back to the Raiders.

Plus if you don't select a goal kicker in your side you deserve to lose because of goal kicking.
