Spoilers "The Naked Time"

Just a question as I rewatch the series:

At the end of the episode, the Enterprise travels back in time 3 days. They have 3 days to live over again.

How does that work? What about the Enterprise that was there in orbit three days previously? Does the fact that they went back in time "erase" the versions of themselves in the three days they have lived already?

I think the time travel rules in this case say that those three days never happened, and going back in time does not create a second Enterprise.

But based on how the bridge crew behaves, it seems that within the ship, the events did happen and thus Joe Tormolen is still dead. The Department of Temporal Investigations later determined that he wasn't a regular. That's the variable that messed up the equations.

Wasn't this supposed to be a two-parter originally? The second part "Tomorrow is Yesterday". So they were originally meant to go back in time 200 years not 3 days.
It would have been strange for "Naked Time" to end on cliff hanger where the Enterprise was stuck back i time 200 years instead of a relatively safe 3 days.

I think this ended up getting debunked, but I'm not 100% sure.

That's been the rumor for years but not possible since the final draft for "The Naked Time" was dated 6-28-66 and the initial story outline for "Tomorrow is Yesterday" was not until 10-03-66 so there was no cross-over at all during preproduction.

To me, there were two Enterprises for those 3 days, just in different locations. I supposed if they had wanted to they could have gone back to Psi 2000 and warned their earlier selves but then there is that whole none interference thing that always gets in the way! I just imagine they proceeded on with their next assignment.

I recall a novel saying they had to keep out of their own way for those 3 days not to upset the timeline, but I suspect at the time they hadn't really thought of the consequences beyond opening up new storytelling possibilities (which came to fruition with "Assignment: Earth")

Was the Enterprise at Psi 2000 for 3 days? I took it that the Enterprise had to leave the system before their 3 day younger counterparts arrived

I suppose the solution would be to stay out of the way of their past selves until their past selves disappeared into the time warp. Then they could just continue on as normal.

My script, labeled "Final Draft" dated 6-28-66 has "new ending" pages at the end dated 8-11-66. It also has "Part 1" printed on the cover. It also has revised pages from 7-01-66 and 7-05-66.

Primary filming started on 6/30/66 with the last day of production on 7/08/66.

I wonder if they scraped the second part because John D.F. Black had quit and they didn't want to have to pay him royalties for a part 2 or maybe he didn't want to have anything to do with writing part 2 and they just dropped it.
