News The Matrix Rebooted

Other than cash, why reboot it? .... The brand name? Meh.
But, what if - and, stay with me here - what if this reboot starred Chris Hemsworth and Selena Gomez? And Hemsworth made lots of goofy ad-libs? Are you pre-ordering a 4K Blu Ray yet?

If it was Tessa Thompson and Selena Gomez, then yes.

Actually I hope in the reboot I hope The One is a woman of color, just so the idiots and bigots of the internet will howl.

I like it when they scream.

Except you will have even MORE people than Ghostbusters who will have a legitimate gripe that there was nothing that bad about the original that you need a complete reboot. There Will be a lot of "why couldnt it be a sequel that Passes the baton on to new characters?" Mixed in with the highlighted racist and misogynistic remarks

The Matrix was diverse long before it became a shrill rallying cry. Your feeling that it's diversity-quotient is somehow not enough shows how absurd it's become. BTW, Keanu is part asian.

Oddly, I just rewatched the first one last night. It still holds up quite nicely.
I have up half way through the first time I watched it when it first got a home video release. Got through it all a few years later when it was shown on television.

I understand the sequels were worse - is there really interest for more ?

I know, right?
There isn’t a reason to reboot, like I said earlier.

I just want to watch the internet burn.

Uh. I didn’t make any such claim that it wasn’t diverse. Or diverse enough.

I said: they should a woman of color as the one “just so” the idiots and bigots will complain. Because they always complain when there’s a person of color or a woman at the center of a franchise they “love,” ie, Star Wars.

Again, perhaps, I just want to watch the internet burn as people reveal their bigotry.

Oh. Wait. I just reread your post. Perhaps the revealing has begun!

Jeez, and I was only trying to make an "unnecessary franchise revival starring Chris Hemsworth" joke... :p

But like I said, the concept of a 'Matrix reboot' has actually happened. Anyone who's seen Reloaded/Revolutions knows that the Matrix we actually see is like version 4 or 5. It's an established part of the plot. So why would Matrix fans complain?

I'm not sure what could really be done differently if The Matrix were remade, but I'm enough of a fan to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I think we could do without Chris Hemsworth though. The guy's great but at this rate there won't be a major film franchise which doesn't star him or Tom Hardy.

Mary Wiseman would be fantastic though :)

I loved The Matrix back in the idea, and the sequels did great in expanding the universe.
I remember not being allowed in the cinema for the latter because I was too young.

The sequels were shot back-to-back, and part one ended in a cliffhanger - I remember (German) news buzzing with how groundbreaking that concept was. Movie, ending like a TV show? Bold! And tying directly into the spin-off game!

The style was so influential. Suddenly wannabe-cool people could wear sunglasses and heavy black outfits, whether leather or not, and be something other than goths.

The third film hinted at a sequel, that there would be an armistice rather than total Human freedom. The POC girl could bring Neo back.

And then, Animatrix. When that came around, interest started to wane because it became clear there would not be another movie. I don't even know if the MMO ever became available in Germany.
I remember wondering about that world presented in Animatrix. The war was between UN and machines. So, was Switzerland spared? I imagined the country isolated, covered by a dome-megastructure.

Getting a new movie would be exciting for me. Hopefully we'd get some merchandise this year. An Eaglemoss collection with sentinels, Mjolnir, and co.?

The original was a neat hodgepodge of ideas, buoyed by inspired casting, tight direction, and revolutionary camerawork. Each sequel suffered because there were no new ideas and the epic effects just weren't as epic. I've not seen it since maybe a decade ago so if I popped it in I might enjoy the first one, but the sequels - even at the time - ruined the audience's imagination by telling us what happened afterward as opposed to our sitting there going "Cool, now Neo tries to reform by ______________. Or oopsies.") Compare that to, say, a certain "The Empire Strikes Back" flick, which was eminently clever in expanding the saga while whipping up some new and rather novel revelations... but before I digress, the question remains: Is the reboot a paint-the-numbers retelling or are the makers finding something lacking in the original that could be improved upon and to make a more definitive incarnation? As indicated, the original flick is lax on the plot department but a few more innovations and seeds to branch out on, along with a cast with chemistry, and even the visuals needn't necessarily be bleeding edge in order to work. Being on par with 1999 the way most movies have since (even "Wonder Woman" from 2017 uses the same camera moves, some more blended in than others, proving without a doubt how trendsetting "The Matrix" was in the visuals department )

And, of course, prequels. We already know the machines won. Like Terminator. Unlike Terminator, Matrix didn't use the backstory/how as a plot point. We know they won. What expectations do people have for such a prequel to be wowed and floored for when the big moment comes where the machines hit the on switch and zap zap everyone? Even a certain Star Wars episode III movie fumbled with its Order 666 and all the younglings (which sounds like a brand name for venison, doesn't it?) are sliced into veal... poor ol' Ally McVeal... the less that's said about the lava surfing scenes the better since they make Marry Poppins Super Leia less laughable by comparison... But I digress. All we know is, they won. How many care? How many won't? What turns what ostensibly is a slam dunk "the story writes itself!" into something that's actually embraced more than the original movie had? It's not easy, nor enviable to have to attempt.

In other words, less can be more. Only Star Wars, Star Trek, and Superman (1978) had sequels that really outdid the original movie outing. Shame about Superman III and Richard Donner and all that but he was rather ahead of his time... :(

I don't really know where they could go with another movie. I could be interesting if it's a true reboot to see how they rearrange things, but if this is going to be a sequel or semi-reboot, I don't really see the point.
