The Maple Leaf Lounge

And for now for something different.

Firearms might not be everyone's cup of tea but this one has Canadian historical ties.

In the middle of the 19th century, there was an organization called ithe fenian brotherhood which had ties to the ira and in favour of an independant Ireland.

So they hatched a plan to invade and seize control of Canada with the idea of trading it back to Britain in return for Ireland.

It didn't go well.

They were intercepted and their guns confiscated first time around, then came the U.S civil war and afterwards they got them back and had them converted to breach loaders and tried again with even less success.

at the risk of a mod smacking for spamming...

The liberals have flipped a riding in Quebec taking it from the bloc by the smallest margin possible margin - a single vote.

this was after judicial recount and that's the final option.

It leaves Carney two seats short of a majority.

might be a couple of bloc supporters who wish they'd turned out to vote.

I really hope Canada Post and CUPW can come to an agreement soon. I have no desire to go through the same kind of mess again now, as we did at the end of last year.

in this instance cupw can go screw it's self.

this isn't about the best deal for the workers, it's about the union and membership. There's no need to need to make the position for the saturday parcel delivery full time and frankly with the union demand Canada post could well just kill the the whole thing.

gas prices are right down so why it Canada Post still charging a fuel level? It's expensive enough to post stuff from North America as it.

sent maple syrup and other items off to my mum in Australia this morning. Box was 12"x9"x7 (roughly) weight 4.64kg. Shipping was $164 and the was a a $20 fuel surcharge.

It's half the cost for mum to send stuff to me.

They're probably doing what they've always done as it's always been fairly high, and maybe they're a little slow to adapt to the changing fuel prices, or hoping nobody notices.

$184 to ship a package under 5 kg?! That's borderline criminal.

Admitted it’s going by air.

Surface was $50 cheaper on the base rate but could take 3 months to arrive.

Read an article sometime back that some 19th century treaty is the reason why mailing from North America is so expensive.

Hi Laura, just a friendly reminder to please not make the same post in multiple threads.

No Spamming. You can't post the same thing multiple times on the board

If there were some personal thoughts or commentary to make the posts substantially different, then that’s one thing, but if you’re just dropping a link to an article, please pick one thread. Thank you.

I tried to think of something to say. Sorry. My intent was to share it on the two threads that were pertinent. If I'd shared a different news site's link with essentially the same story, would that have been okay?

I think the sale to Canadian Tire is a pretty good idea. I only hope they don't overextend themselves. But at least it's back in Canadian hands. I could see themselves maybe making a smaller Hudson's Bay section in Canadian Tire stores. I've never been in Hudson Bay stores for extended periods of time, because not only were they expensive, they were often only in major cities, making it inconvenient for those out in the further reaches making them inaccessible for some of the population. If they were in more locations, that could have driven prices down as well.

Hmm. Well, of course I didn't write the rules, I'm just supposed to enforce them. So this is only my take on it, but I would think that based on what the rule is trying to accomplish, that posting two similar news articles about the same story from two different sources, without further commentary, would still be, at the very least, against the spirit of the law.

If you want my opinion, if you're picking just one thread, I would probably pick this one if it was me, because most of the Canadian posters seem to wander through this thread at one point or another. The other thread might get more views overall, but the non-Canadians reading that one probably aren't going to care about the Bay all that much. But of course you can pick whichever one feels right to you.

Although I'm glad to see such a storied, historic company survive in some form, it does seem like a bit of a tonal mismatch. The Bay always seemed to want to be more of a high-end experience, whereas Canadian Tire has much more "everyman" vibes. I'm not sure a mini-Bay within a Canadian Tire outlet would work all that well. It will be interesting to see what happens. Since Canadian Tire didn't buy the whole operation, one suspects that they won't try to operate the Bay as separate stores (and the article seems to say this as well). If I had to guess, I would probably think that the most visible thing to come out of this is that Canadian Tire stores will start selling the Bay's iconic striped blankets. But I guess we'll see.
