The Least Disliked Episode 2025 - TAS Seasons 1 & 2

BlueStuff

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Our addictive biyearly game of rapid elimination returns - now with more shows than ever. It's generally a lot of fun, providing a chance to mentally revisit those episodes you may not have thought about in a while. With that in mind, why not play again?

So, here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your least favourite or the one you deem the 'worst.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.
Pretty simple. Enjoy!

I'm rather fond of TAS as a whole. Back in the days before streaming, constant repeats and home media, it was more STAR TREK and it stood up well to the original series.

I shall kick off with "The Practical Joker". The humour is puerile, the plot full of enormous holes and the "gaseous anomaly" causing the problems is unconvincing. Not even the first mention of the holodeck can save it.

The Infinite Vulcan really doesn't do much for me and is entirely forgettable.

It was cool to involve Walter Koenig though being as he wasn't part of the TAS cast.

Hmmm, I'd rather watch The Magic of Horatio J Hoodoo than

The Magicks of Megas-Tu

Actually, I really would, "Lidsville" was such a goofy riot. 'Magicks" is just... not riotously funny, not even goofy in a good way, and while I know a show has to break formula once in a while to see what else sticks to the wall, this is like where the kid flings a too-boiled egg on the wall and wonders why it doesn't stick, especially when there's some reused tropes/elements (at least TMP made it feel original if not refreshing, which is the goal. This episode is just inanity.) Try spaghetti monsters instead to go with that snoozy parody of Pan there.

From 1971-1973, I'm amazed Lidsville didn't influence TAS... unless it had... :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty:

Chapel never gets any comeuppance for what amounts to attempted date rape in "Mudd's Passion." Yes, I realize this wouldn't have been considered as much of an issue in the 1970's, but I'm not voting then, I'm voting now. (And even then I thought it made her look bad.)

Taking out "BEM".

Despite being able to take fuller advantage of the animated format,

The Ambergris Element

didn't make me feel like I was having a whale of a time.

Some good ideas are present in this otherwise ambitious outing, but there's zero time for it to develop. Plus, the old trope of "young vs old" probably would have been more exciting in 1967.

If nothing else, it might have had some minor inspiration for "The Voyage Home".

"The Eye of the Beholder" is a weak instalment. Whilst most of TAS is as "adult" as TOS, this one often seems childish with rather bizarre decision-making being needed to make the plot work (or, at least, stagger along). Fun so long as you don't think too much about it.

"More Tribbles, More Troubles" is tedious and repetitive. Not enough new ideas to justify it's existence.

Given the quality of the writer involved, I felt "The Slaver Weapon" should have been good. As it is, the adaptation by ADF for the Logs was better than the episode, and the episode itself a little disappointing.

I really dislike the storytelling trope of wiping someone's memories because it's too "dangerous" for them to remember. If Kirk and Spock hadn't proven their trustworthiness by the end of "Jihad," then what, exactly, would it take?

When navel-gazing tries to be cool but is just too square:

How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth

Kukulkan, not related to Fran and Ollie, had helped ancient Earth. Whee. is there a point where the trope is used so much that there's zero way to improve on it to make it narratively impactful again? Then again, humans screwed up Kukulkan's designs all over the planet and in their own exotic ways... somehow...

Somehow, I get the feeling George and Gracie, or Kevin Oxbridge, but not Ardra, may have been influenced in part by this ambitious-but-flawed'n'hokey TAS episode.

"The Terratin Incident" is one of those "use the transporter to return people to their former state" episodes. The science is pretty weird and I have wondered how the transported city would cope with the "new" bugs (both germs and insects) of their saviour planet.

I do like "The Counter-Clock Incident," especially for introducing us to Robert and Sarah April. But the logic of the counter-time universe is iffy at best. And the decision the Aprils make at the end? As a person in my 60s, I can tell you it's bogus. I don't have a lot of regrets about my life, either, but having the health and added life expectancy of a 30-something again -- especially with the love of my life getting the same deal -- is not an offer I'd ever pass up.

It's hard to find anything negative to say about any of these. I guess "One Of Our Planets Is Missing" is a bit too much of a downer. Those scenes over the viewscreen with the guy lamenting how many millions of people are going to die and how few they can evacuate, damn.
