THE LAST SHIP Season 3 - spoilers, reviews, discussions and junk...

Ah, quite the episode. Happy reunions, Chandler has taken back a decent portion of the military, things are in place for the epic finale next week. Based on all their squabbling and evident fracturing, I think I've figured out how the regional leaders will be defeated, ultimately they'll all turn on each other and Chandler will easily be able to swoop in and take back America from them.

As predicted, the Chinese destroyer was used as a decoy for the missiles. I do find it ironic becoming independent from the rest of America is basically the regional leader's thing, but they're perfectly okay using Michener's initiatives to create a centralized defense computer when it suits them.

I realize that arriving at America is a big deal, but given the lesson that should have been learned from the POW arc earlier this year, they sent an alarming number of senior officers along on the tactical team. The Captain, CNO, Master Chief leaving only the XO, plus a visiting Captain and XO on board the Nathan James. Oh well, clearly these things are decided by who is in the main cast are the ones who get the important stuff.

Tex continues to be awesome and damn, his daughter is turning out to be quite the badass. Meanwhile President Oliver is really starting to grow on me, hopefully he will be able to resume the Presidency properly once this situation is resolved. Also, I like how Allison's military liaison doesn't mind showing some adoration for Chandler by stating how badass he is, much to Allison's ire. Someone probably should start Tom Chandler fact, like the Chuck Norris facts.

That part seems true to life.

Jane wants to steal the product. It was about the only thing left on this show that rings true.

I am glad that Dennis (the tech guy in st. Louis), according to a throw away line was able to run. So hopefully no death for him.

Can't believe it's the finale already....very confused by the preview, and wonder how it sets up next season

So if y'all can excuse the brief moment of self-promotion, there's a thread going on up in the GTD forum discussing how various characters would handle the Kobayashi Maru. Since non-Trek characters were already being mentioned in the thread, I made this contribution:
Captain Tom Chandler: Leads an assault team to take over one of the Klingon ships, use it to destroy another, so that both the captured Klingon ship and the Enterprise can take out the third Klingon ship in a concentrated attack.

Sounds exactly like a Chandler operation...

^ Yea, I just read that too over at EW. Glad that it's already picked up for Season Five, but it kind of sucks that they stated that Season 4 and Season 5 will only have 10 episodes each. Still, more "Last Ship" is a good thing..

And Aerosmith's "Don't want to miss a thing."

As awesome as this news is, I'm going to take a moment to be a wet towel and ask the question: could season five be the final season? Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'd really like to be) but most shows on TNT typically end when they reach a fifth season, and truth is, I'd be surprised if any of the actors signed a contract for longer than five years anyway.

Although, I could see advantages if they knew now the show was ending in two more seasons, mainly they could plan a really epic showdown for the series finale with a story arc and bad guy who spans two whole seasons.

I thought the story wrapped up nicely after two seasons and this third was kind of a bonus coda so if they finished in five that seems OK. I'm not sure if it would have the legs to go beyond that. Seems to me the ambition and scope would likely exceed their resources where the story would go at that point.

I'm okay with five seasons. I've enjoyed the first three and I was never under the illusion that it would last forever. I'll take two more and be happy about it.

I'd rather have five great seasons with a strong, planned conclusion than three great seasons plus any number of mediocre ones. :bolian:

Another very fun ep, with the train sequence being a new element for the series, and a great tension set piece with the charges. Though I wish Castillo's first name wasn't Manuel. When Chandler called him that, all I could hear for the next few seconds was "Si, Mr. Fawlty?!" :rommie:

Epic finale! We get multi-team action, we get NAVAL KOM-BAAAT, Cersei Blondister makes her ultimate moves for the Iron White House, and the conclusion is satisfying and heartfelt. An A+ and a great send-off that leaves you looking forward to season four.

Well, that was quite the finale. Allison proves just how much of a cold bitch she is by selling out the other two regional leaders and killing Roberta Price. So the masterplan was to ultimately make herself the American President, or whatever title she would use? Seems an awfully convoluted way to go about things, but hey. And oh what irony, the one time Chandler stays behind on the Nathan James is the one time he ends up being needed in the field.

I really liked the whole "smoke screen" tactic. I had heard about this before in WWII naval novels I've read, so I enjoyed actually recognizing the tactic when Chandler brought it up. Meanwhile, does the Nathan James not have a chief engineer anymore? We've seen none at all this season, and Commander Garnett, despite being the XO, and even referred as such in this episode is back in the engine room, even though as XO she should have been on the bridge, what with Chandler being in CIC and everyone else off the ship. I know, the XO from the other ship was likely covering on the bridge, but it still seems very strange there's no apparent chief engineer on the ship anymore.

Ah, Tex, one of the better characters on the show, and now he's gone permanently. I'm really conflicted about this, as I really am going to miss him, these past few weeks have been a reminder of just how awesome he is. But that is a really good death scene, so at least there's that.

And so now Chandler is depressed and bitter over all he's lost and that he no longer measures up to his own standard of nobility. I do like the final scene with the Nathan James crew assembled on deck to send him off, kind of reminds me of when Worf left the Enterprise at the end of Redemption. But truth is, like the scene in Redemption, the fact we know Chandler will be back kind of guts it of any real emotional investment.

I felt kind of cheated the death of Chandler's father was just mentioned off screen, he's a character prominent enough he should have gotten a proper, on-screen death. Also, it seemed rather out of character that Chandler apparently hadn't been around to visit Tex's daughter. While I get they're trying to convey Chandler's depression over all he's lost and that he's sick of losing people in general, Tex is someone who literally died saving Chandler's life, he should at least pass that along to the next of kin.

Well, it's been a blast as always, I'm looking forward to season 4 and another summer to spend with the crew of the Nathan James.

I guess I can't blame Chandler for walking away like that. Not only is he wrestling with all he lost around him, he's probably also dealing with the demons of killing in cold blood. After all, all she was doing was monologueing and while I don't blame him for acting out as he did (I might have done the same thing given the situation), he is at his core, a decent, level headed man. The aftermath of doing something like that would be a lot to handle.

Definitely after spending a few hours thinking things over, I can certainly see Chandler's actions making a bit more sense than I let on in my previous post. EG, I assume he's avoiding Tex's daughter because he doesn't want to be reminded of the fact that he sort of "failed" Tex by ignoring his dying wish.

Although, one major issue that now comes up is, who is going to take over as CNO or even running the military? Slattery's the next highest ranking Navy officer, I guess, and they can easily stick Captain Meylan in command of the Nathan James, but what about the rest of the military? The only officers left with any real rank from the other branches were the ones that were somehow involved with Allison's plan. And while some, like the general from last week renounced their involvement and switched back, I can't imagine President Oliver is going to place very much trust in them.
