'The Inbetweeners'- E4 sitcom, the anti-'Skins'

Anyone else watching The Inbetweeners on E4? (currently two episodes into is second series, Thursday nights)
I would agree with Stewart Lee that most of E4 is offal, but this is the major exception

Wikipedia article
It's essentially about four male friends going through Sixth Form in your average British school, and gets its name from the social class of those not cool enough to be popular but not geeky enough to be nerds.
Similar in humour to fellow C4 sitcom Peep Show (and shares some of the writers), and loosely described as a British American Pie/Superbad

Some great funny character highlights vids of the four main characters-
Simon
Jay
Neil
Will

I caught one episode of the first series on a repeat run and thought it was hilarious, quickly bought the DVD and am loving the second series. Easily stands alongside Newswipe as the best thing on TV at the moment

One thing I've heard of it, and what I would definitely agree with, is that it's the anti-Skins. I've never been a fan of Skins, I've only seen about 6 random episodes but I find nearly every character in hideous and repulsive wankers, and the setups and plots completely ridiculous.
Basically I agree 100% with Stewart Lee Here!, that there's this massive cynicism about the way the show is put together and written.
I get its meant to be a kind of warped reality in the way Teachers was, but it doesn't represent what being a teenager is like one iota.

The Inbetweeners however really reminds me of my own Sixth Form days; I had friends like that (everyone knew someone like Jay) we always hung out together, were unsure of ourselves, not overly comfortable around girls, weren't going out every night partying, drinking, having sex, taking drugs like Skins would have you believe, etc

I watched a few brief moment of The Inbetweeners when the first series was being aired last year, and I only caught a glimpse of Will with his briefcase and I didn't think much of it. Then I watched the first episode of the second series as Skins has gone off the air, and I laughed for most of the episode.

I watched the first series last week and I loved every episode, this really is a great TV series, much better than anything else I've seen on TV so far.

I find that if you went to sixth form/college in England/Wales, you'll probably love The Inbetweeners. You really can see the people you know in it, especially in the main 4 characters. It's lewd, crude and scream out loud hilarious. Easily the funniest thing on TV at the moment.

I've only ever seen bits, which didn't really grab me. But I keep hearing it's good, so picked up the DVD of the first series when I saw it on sale for £6. I plan on watching it soon, and I'm recording series 2 to catch up if I like series 1.

The first ep of Series 1 is great, I love the bit of all the random people just insulting Will for the sake of it
"You're gonna die here Will"
"Briefcase wanker!"
"Your shoes are well shit"
"Posh twat!"

You know what I'm going to 4oD the first series right now. Haven't seen it since it aired and after Red Dwarf my laughter gland needs some exercise.

I think it's really nice to see a teen centered comedy that doesn't have some form of drugs in it every 10 or so minutes.

^ No, just very strong language and explicitly crude sex references :D
But yes, I know what you mean, nice for them to show that not all teens are pot smoking stoners. And you know that if The Inbetweeners ever do have an episode dealing with drugs, it's not gonna go well for them!

btw, I think Jay may actually be the greatest fictional character ever, the actor James Buckley is just superb. Loved the last ep of him reading out his Valentines Day card messages, which he obviously wrote himself
"Roses are red, violets are blue, your dong is massive, I want to blow you"

I love this show. It perfectly captures the inherent crapness of sixth form life, right down to the futile chase after the "popular" girls, and the four leads are basically the stereotypical examples of the people you encounter there.

Sadly I have to say I was a Will type, although after sixth form I sort of grew a pair.

I was probably most like Simon, in that it took me nearly the entire Sixth Form to gain the courage to ask this girl out I liked. And I had a friend just like Jay who made out he was this big ladies man and knew it all, but it was obviously just bullshit

I'd say the best episode by far is easily ep 5 of Series 1 where they go to Jay's caravan club which he describes as a massive sex orgy
Simon- "So you've shagged her and her sister have you?"
Jay- "Untold times"
Simon-"Because her sister's twelve years old!"
Jay- "er, well not her. Girls like her...."

Hahaha, the caravan club is amazing. Jay I think is the best fictional character ever in my opinion. He reminds me so much of my friend, Matt, who acts just like him.

I love that he uses the term "gash" a lot, which my friend Ian always uses.
Hilarious when he tells Simon that all the girls will be "foaming at the gash"

I like the one where they're at the rubbish party and are saying popular girl Charlotte Hinchcliffe won't show up
Simon- "She wouldn't come to a party like this"
Jay- "I'll make her come! All over my face!"

Anyone see ep 3 of Series 2 last Thursday?
I'd say it was easily one of the best so far. Jay getting caught by his mum whilst doing the "sleeping beauty" was hilarious, as was Simon asking those chav girls on the street corner if they wanted to go to their dinner party
"I'm thirteen, and she's eleven you nonce!"
"You fucking pedo!"

And Will's mum did indeed looking super fit in this episode.

Oh and interesting fact, I just found out that Emily Head who plays Simon's life long love Carly, is the daughter of Anthony Stewart Head

Simon: ...Hello
Girls: "What the fuck did you just say?!
Simon: Uhh...hi?

Haha, love it.

I'm just going to finish watching Season 4 of Enterprise, another 2 discs, and then I'm going to try and catch up with The Inbetweeners. I have series 1 on DVD, and the 3 episodes, so far, of series 2 recorded.

Great, it's worth the watch. If you (still) like Skins, you'll love this.
Yeah, I still like Skins. I even bought series 3 on DVD...
The friend who originally got me to watch Skins seems to love it, too, so I wouldn't be surprised if, one I give it a fair shot, I love it as well.
