The season of speedsters, season 2 was not. But wait! There's more to come. Jesse and Wally may finally get their powers and in a big surprise, we lost Barry's dad only to have his Earth-3 doppelganger appear as its resident speedster, Jay Garrick. It's a great new role for John Wesly Shipp that many fans have hoped for and now look forward to seeing more of, now that it's a reality.

It also looks like season 3 will give us a take on The Flashpoint Paradox which is a story about how Barry Allen went back in time to stop his mother from being killed only to end up creating a vastly different timeline where things weren't so great. How long this arc will last is anyone's guess. Will it be a full season? Half a season? Only the first episode or two? And how will it affect the other shows?

And finally, as Turtletrekker mentioned, Tom Cavanagh will be back as a regular. Will he be playing yet another version of Harrison Wells?

That story's original title was simply Flashpoint. The Flashpoint Paradox is the title of the animated adaptation.

It's worth watching before season 3 starts.

I didn't much care for the movie. It was just your stock "It's an alternate reality so let's make everything as horrible as possible and kill everyone off" story that we've seen a dozen times before. Tons of gratuitous violence and shock value with no deeper purpose -- like so much of what DC does in various media these days, it was striving to be as dark and despairing and shocking as Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns or The Killing Joke without understanding that the darkness and violence of those works were a means to an end rather than an end in themselves.

And I doubt the show's version will be that similar to the comics and the movie. After all, the movie was a Justice League movie, not specifically a Flash movie. The Flash was the catalyst and the viewpoint character, but the story was about the larger DCU and the changes to Batman and Wonder Woman and Aquaman and other characters that aren't part of the Arrowverse. So I don't think watching the movie, or reading the original comics, would necessarily be valuable to the viewing experience of the show.

Easter Egg: The house young Barry lives in in The Flashpoint Paradox animated movie is a cartoon version of Marty McFly's house.

I hope it's Earth-2 Wells. I loved that guy. And I liked Jesse Quick too.

Yeah, I'd just as soon have Harry as a regular on the show. I definitely noticed Cavanaghs absence in the early part of season 2, and am not interested in him playing a different Wells every season. He was too good to let go, so settle on a role for him and keep him around. I was hoping he and Jessie would stay on E-1.

If Barry doesn't become the Flash, Thawne never goes back to the past to kill his mommy, and that's not even taking into account that Barry murdered the Reverse Flash (verification?) in the final.

The Reverse Flash is not present in the year 2000 past his own death, so Thawne will not kill and replace Wells and Earth 1 Wells is back in play, and earth 1 Jessie is given a good chance of being conceived. Hmmm... New actor to play Tess, or is she going to be wearing old lady make up?

I was hoping he and Jessie would stay on E-1.

Could be when Barry changes everything on Earth-1 he might need some help from them to put it back, so he goes to Earth-2 which should be unaffected and this time that Welles decides to stick around. :techman:

Because of the prophyalactesis storm walling Earths, Wells II is exactly the sort of person who is going to say "What the hell happened, this isn't right, where's Barry Allen and why isn't he the Flash?" and then do something about it.

We know that Barry becomes the Flash in the timeline where his mother lives, just 5 years later. It would make sense that the season 2 finale is the catalyst for the creation of that timeline.

I'd like to see him as a regular too. I just wish he'd drop that raspy voice.

Question: Any hints on The Flash‘s Season 3 Big Bad? I’m hoping Mirror Master is introduced! —Mike
Ausiello:
I’m seeing nothing firm (yet) on Mirror Master being introduced, but here’s a curious new breakdown to wrap your noodle around: For Season 3, the CW hit is casting the major recurring character of Barry’s slightly older, slightly geekier contemporary, a guy who is as smart as he is intuitive. As such, this newcomer doesn’t buy Barry’s nice guy routine and sets out to learn what he’s hiding — all while concealing some secrets of his own….

Ask Ausiello

^^
Unsurprising, but still interesting.

They also announced the premiere date: October 4th.
