The Elder Scrolls V in Production

According to a source quoted in this Eurogamer article, Bethesda are working hard on the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series, which is a direct sequel to Oblivion.

This source not only confirmed that the game is in current production, but also spoke briefly about the content - with fantasy-sounding phrases like Dragon Lord, something with The Blades - and that voice acting for the characters in the game is currently happening in the weeks to follow.
"The same source confirmed, with official game documents in hand, that this will be the chronological sequel to what happened in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which is the latest game in the now 16-years-old Elder Scrolls saga and by itself one of the better RPGs for PC and consoles.

Executive producer Todd Howard said in an interview with Eurogamer at QuakeCon that the studio's current title will be announced soon, but he couldn't say exactly when. "I have a sense but we're not ready even to talk about [the timing of the announcement], because it might change. I don't want to disappoint people.
"One thing I can say is that from when you first hear about it to when it's out will be the shortest it's been for us. It's pretty far along. When we show it, we want to show a lot, because there's a lot of game there to play right now.

Fantastic news. I still have to finish Oblivion properly myself, as I keep getting distracted by other games, but I'm definitely looking forward to a sequel.

Great! I had so much fun with Oblivion. I just hope they tweak the leveling system. I don't like how all the mobs in the whole world scaled to YOUR level, and I didn't like how leveling up worked in the first place, but I loved the story and the gameplay.

I've sunk 40 hours and counting into Fallout 3, and still to play New Vegas and if Elder 5 is any good then well all I can say is...

Dam you Bethesda, your stealing my life

I have to admit, I had a hard time getting along with Oblivion. Perhaps it didn't help that I played Fallout 3 first but I just didn't really "feel" the world and the combat just got annoying.
If they're updating the engine then I might give it a look, but I can't say as I'm really looking forward to it much.

You know for the longest time I had two friends at work that CONSTANTLY talked about Oblivion and tried to talk me into playing it on a daily basis.
I told them I had ZERO interest as RPG games didn't fall into my game playing realm and I'm not into the fantasy genre so forget it , then along came Fallout 3, since I liked the subject matter I played it even though it was an RPG.
I absolutely fell in love with it so I started thinking maybe I'd give Oblivion a chance after all.
While on vacation last year I found the GOTY in gamestop for around $20.00 so I figured what the heck, I'll buy it.

I'm ashamed to say that I barely moved off of my couch my entire vacation as that is all I did was play Oblivion.

I can officially say that I am eagerly awaiting the next game and will own it DAY ONE. ;)

I'll probably pick it up, but theres a few things I hope they change...the leveling system being the biggest one. I also hope the world and the environments are a bit more creative. While the world was wonderfully designed, I feel as if Morrowind's was more interesting.

Yeah, I preferred Morrowind's environment and leveling system. The setting was atypical for a fantasy game. Oblivion's a good game but Cyrodiil is kind of a cookie-cutter fantasy setting.

Actually, I'd quite like to see TES leaving Tamriel this time and showing us some Akavir :mallory:

Of course that's unlikely, as this is supposed to be a direct sequel to Oblivion, plot-wise.

I'm fine with Tamriel, but how about Skyrim? Or maybe even Black Marsh. I'd just like to see some further variety.

I never got into Oblivion, but I'm a diehard Morrowind fan. With all the graphics extenders and plug-ins its better-looking than Oblivion anyway.

It's likely that they won't be using Oblivion/Fallout 3's engine anymore. The company behind the engine they use, Emergent Tech, which makes the Gamebryo engine which is what Oblivion and Fallout 3 are using, is undergoing liquidation. Lots has happened within the company since Oblivion, such as the merger of Zenimax with Id Software. Considering Id Software is all about engine licensing, it's very likely that the next Elder Scrolls game will use the next version of idTech.

I'd personally like to see a new land, like maybe a neighbouring one. It's starting to feel like they need to expand as games have visited areas multiple times.

Eeeexcellent.

TES is one of those games that I get really excited about... then shelf for a month. Then I pick it up and say "Oh my God I'll never play another game again!"... then the shelf again. Excited about TES 5 though.

Ah, gotcha, your wording just mixed me up. I thought you were thinking Tamriel was Cyrodiil or something, sorry. Yeah, I agree, I think TES5 is going to stay on Tamriel and we're going to see a new province as the setting. Skyrim could be cool. I don't think they'll do the Black Marsh.

Tamriel's a big enough continent there's plenty left to explore. Personally, I'd like to see Hammerfell in a current-gen TES game. :D

I'd like to see somewhere new. I thought they did a pretty cool job exploring the culture of the Dunmer in Morrowind, why not go to the High Elves' digs (sorry, been a LONG time since I played) or that... um... one jungly... place... where the Argonians live?
