The Dauphin and Odo

Panem et circenses

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
Not sure whether this belongs here or in the Deep Space Nine forum, but I was just watching The Dauphin and was wondering whether anyone has thought along the same lines as I did watching the episode.

When they discover Salia and Anya are shapeshifters they mention these are creatures only spoken of in legend and rarely seen. I wondered whether they actually weren't from Daled IV at all and are instead two Changelings/Founders. That at least Anya was one of the Changelings that was sent to explore space, like Odo, and that Salia was either her offspring or another Changeling she found.

My headcanon for the events would be that Anya lived on Daled IV and saw the horrible events of the war between the two factions and assisted with the romance between those purported to be Salia's mother and father (the Romeo and Juliet of Daled IV), but that they actually did not have a child. Instead, Anya saw an opportunity to bring together the two factions by training her offspring, or another Changeling, to be their ruler. We know that Anya is not from Daled IV, as she states the third moon in the system is hers. And it would explain her exceptionally overprotective behaviour, especially if Salia is actually her offspring. We also have nothing but Salia's word in displaying her true self at the end of the episode, and since she is wanting Wesley to remember her fondly, the actual form she took may have simply been to create this reaction. Or, simply moving into the form of those on Daled IV, as we do not know if they are shapeshifters at all.

If we take this to be the case, it makes the conversation between Anya and Worf really interesting. Since he would go on to take part in fighting against shapeshifters again in Deep Space Nine.

Just curious whether anyone else has thought something similar during the episode. It definitely made it a more enjoyable watch this time through for me. Even if it did feel like I was putting on a tin foil hat and weaving conspiracy theories...

The Founders and Anya/Salia weren't the only shapeshifters. You also have Martia from the sixth Star Trek Movie. The one that "helped" Kirk and McCoy escape from Rura Penthe.

Of course! I forgot about her/him. Since we aren't given a definitive timeline for when the Founders launched the Changelings into space to explore, it is quite possible that Martia may also be one. That may even be where the 'legends' mentioned in The Dauphin originate.

There are entirely too many shapeshifters in STAR TREK. I know that they're entertaining and mysterious and how they echo ancient myths and legends and all of that ... but, really. Just how many species must we have? Same with the Immortal, Omnipotent Beings ... there are so many that fans get confused! They can't cope. So, they end up trying to lump Trelane from TOS, in as a Q, for instance, along with one, or two others that were never related. STAR TREK should've shown more restraint in copying off of itself, over and over. But, yes, Salia was very sweet and very pretty, indeed ... until it was clear that she was a shapeshifter, I was happy for Wesley. He'd done well for himself ... or, so it seemed.

maybe the Voy Demon Blood is a Changeling that got mutated into something bigger and somewhat different.

Marta states that she is a chameloid, rather than being a humanoid.

I consider the Founders to be single organism, with portions that can act independently of the whole, but prefer to coexist in complete unity.

They are a unique species, and unlike the chameloids in the Alpha and Beta quadrants.

Anya/Salia probably are not Changelings. They come from a planet full of their people. They are biological descendants and relatives of the people from their planet.

From Memory Alpha:

An allasomorph was an anthropomorphic shapeshifting species, once thought to be only rumor, capable of altering its molecular structure into that of other species. The species was mentioned in the galactic zoological catalog.

The inhabitants of Daled IV and its moons, including Salia and Anya, were allasomorphs. (TNG: "The Dauphin")

Unlike the Changelings of the Gamma Quadrant, allasomorphs were capable of enjoying the flavors present in foods, required sleep, and could become infected with sicknesses common to other humanoids.

Salia's parents Edit
The parents of Salia gave birth to her daughter in 2349 on Daled IV. The father was from one side of the planet while the mother was from the other. Because of this they left the planet, hoping that her not being from either side would one day allow Salia to neutrally govern and unify the planet. They contacted the Federationand asked for a transport to bring Salia to Klavdia III. They died shortly thereafter. (TNG: "The Dauphin")

There is too much biological evidence that Anya and Salia are a separate but similar specie.

We also have the Vendorians from TAS The Survivor
