I would venture Lady Gaga or even Taylor Swift. There are plenty of singers that have turned actress and vice-versa. And someone like Taylor Swift would absolutely resonate in a remake. Matt Damon as the bodyguard?

I was fortunate enough to work on a project with Kevin Costner and, during the breaks, he would be good enough to chat to the crew. He told the story of the bodyguard and the studio was having a hard time with his casting of Whitney Houston, for a number of reasons. He, obviously, prevailed and a classic movie was born.

I'm not sure if the Movie is a classic, but Houston's song became more well known than Dolly's version, despite Dolly Parton writing the song.

Also, I don't care who they get, they'll never do as god (or better) than Alan Silvestri's score.

Hans Zimmer has just entered the chat.

Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez ...

If Samara Weavings real voice was in Borderline then she has a great voice. Lots of actors are good singers, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor for example.

I'm sure Erivo or Grande will be considered.

Grande doesn't quite give off the diva vibe that Houston did (unless they retcon Houston's character as a young pop star).

Swift could almost play herself (Pop idol in a high profile romance becomes a target for an assassination attempt after she says/does the wrong thing at the wrong time and offends the wrong people).

Love triangle, maybe? (Swap out her football player beau onscreen for a basketball or a baseball player.)

That's more or less what I was thinking. Or she could play one persona heavily inspired by herself, thus giving feedback on the production. She has quite a large following, so it could be an easily believable role for her. And while I don't think she's acted outside of music videos, this could be a good role to get a start if she'd want to.

Lady Gaga has proven herself to be a good actress, but I feel like she's already done this type of movie with her version of A Star is Born (there were 3 including hers).

Yeah, she has really made a name for herself in the acting biz, and I wouldn't be surprised if she'll get more roles. And I found her at her most beautiful when she had less makeup on in A Star is Born.

And Dolly was absolutely fine with that.
A zillion dollars a year in royalties from the Whitney version probably helped, TBF.

I don’t mind admitting that I only became aware of the Dolly version some years after WH’s hit, so it’s not just a preference for the first version of the song I heard but Dolly’s version is far better. Yes, Whitney had pipes from heaven but in true diva fashion, her version goes for all the big moments from the opening bars, whereas the way that Dolly builds up over the course of the song does it for me. YMVWD of course.

I would agree, but then I'm a big Dolly fan.

Apparently she made $10 million from the royalties to Whitney's version!

Of course in another universe Elvis recorded it after Dolly (thankfully even in the 70s that woman was smart enough to hang on to 100% of the rights!)

I prefer Dolly's version too. It's the difference between someone belting it out, and someone who can be more subtle. Neither are wrong, just different in their approaches, and I like the slow buildup in songs.

Now speaking of songs for the movie, I wonder if we'll either get a new version of the song, or an entirely new song, kind of like what was done with the 3 version of A Star is Born. Each of them had an entirely different song.

Hopefully to offer the first of many apologies (without mouthing any BRAAAAAMMMSSS), the first of which being: Sorry for even thinking about scoring this.

Hmmm ... Not a Zimmer fan, I see. :shifty:

Rupert Gregson-Williams? James Newton Howard? Henry Jackman?
