I only distantly remember watching these as kids, but I recall preferring the original where he's the therapist over the country inn one. Not that I disliked that one. I'll remember Darryl, and my other brother Darryl. ;)

Both are really good shows and I love them both, but if I had to choose between the two, it would be The Bob Newhart Show, although I think Newhart is still better than 99% of the new sitcoms airing today.

Strangely enough, the character of Elliott Carlen showed up on an episode of St. Elsewhere and told, I think it might have been the William Daniels character, that some "quack in Chicago" ruined his life.

Would that make both The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart part of the Tommy Westphall Universe?

I guess so...

I love the theme to The Bob Newhart Show! My favorite version of the theme song was used during season four, which was a much more upbeat version.

I did a YouTube search. Someone put up the Newhart finale. It's not just the final scene, but more the last ten minutes to the series.

As I posted earlier, I love 'em both. One of my very favorite episodes of Newhart is the one when the Loudons are essentially forced to go have dinner with Larry, Darryl and Darryl, and are dreading the evening.

It starts off as awkwardly as expected, but then ... suddenly, an entire room panel opens up and the two Darryls are sitting at two rotating concert grand pianos and play beautifully in a masterful take-off of Ferrante & Teicher (a VERY "dramatic" piano duo from the 50's and 60's).

I saw Newhart first, so I'm biased towards that. But I have watched the other and it is equally as good overall. Two things make me vote Newhart, since I had to choose one.

1) The time period. I grew up mostly in the 1980's, so my level of nostalgia is greater for anything during that period.

2) The theme song and setting. Henry Mancini is amazing. I love that song. And to this day I want to live in Vermont because of Newhart.

I don't think I could say it better myself.

There was one episode of Newhart titled, "Take me to your Loudan", where the townsfolk think they are being invaded by aliens on Halloween night. They all meet up at the Statford in their costumes. So when they all think they're being invaded, Dick is the only sane one, of course and tries to convince them all otherwise.

The power then goes out at the inn and everyone panics. Then they see a few lights coming towards them. Everyone thinks the aliens have arrived are coming to invade the inn. Everyone hides. The screen is pitch black and all you can see are a few pairs of white lights just sort of hovering around. It's dead quiet until you hear, "Hi, I'm Larry..."

:guffaw:

I'm not really familiar with the Bob Newhart Show, but I love Newhart. Anyone remember "Bob?" Came on CBS sometime in the '90s. I wish they'd release it on dvd.

That's the one where he's the comic book artist.

Does anyone remember the 1997-1998 season show "George and Leo" with Newhart and Judd Hirsch? I loved that show and was really annoyed after it was canceled when the season ended. Bob and Judd, I thought, worked very well together. Their characters were so different, but was so enjoyable watching them.

The pilot is on YouTube. If you're interested, here it is.
