The Action Figure and Toy Collecting and Discussion Thread!

In the late 60s- early 70s, The Worcester Toy Company made a lot of molded plastic ride-on toys. Many were of iconic items like Heinz ketchup, Mr Peanut, Campbell's Soup, etc. My wife and I bought this guy on ebay tonight. I never happened to see one like him before:

When I was little, someone gifted me a Worcester of a Life Savers candy roll. The mold was identical to the following Campbell's soup can. The Life Savers roll was silver-gray, with white handle and white wheels and the big rainbow label.

Those wheels are the first version, and I am here to tell you that, ironically, they would cause my Life Savers roll to dump me on my butt very easily!

The bird has the revised wheels. I have seen some examples of those revised wheels on the Campbell's soup can and they are blue. I can't find any images online of a Life Savers roll like I had.

Anyhow, the bird will be a fine addition to the family of dolls, plushies, pedal cars, etc, that my wife and I have.

I’m 48 years old, and as a kid I had nearly every single Star Wars Figurine/ Toy. My collection was massive, because it’s all I would ask for from family for birthdays/ Christmas etc. I lost interest as I got a little older and most of my collection got sold in garage sales, thrown away or donated. Makes me sick to think of it now, what I would give to have it all back now!!

I managed a bit of additional research and found this:

So, the brown one is a later variant. At this point, it is anyone's guess why the company made the change to brown. Perhaps they encountered a difficulty of some kind.

I joked with my wife that considering the fact that among birds the males are usually more brightly-colored, to distract predators away from the mother birds, we ended up with Harriet rather than Ozzie.

On down the road, maybe we will find her mate....

I cannot see the picture but my guess would be some brittleness depending on the dye in the plastic.

McFarlane's DC license is ending at some point in 2026, going back to Mattel.

I'm a bit bummed about it, as McFarlane had a bit more of an independent toy manufacturer flavor to it, with Todd the toy fan being in charge and not beholden to shareholders. I also love the Super Powers line, that's my idea of a retro line, doing new figures in the classic style. Also, the vehicles are amazing.

Ordered from the official Character site Monday. I have no idea when it'll arrive. The paint job reflects his ensemble from "The Daemons". The torso, limbs and cape are all preexisting pieces but the head is a new sculpt reflecting Pertwee's look with shorter hair (along with a slight smile) from his earlier stories. Like the "Vortex" edition of the Ncuti Gatwa Doctor, the face is not slathered in paint, but rather cast in skin tones with only the hair, eyes and lips accented with paint. (Character tried this years ago with Dr. Yana and the newly regenerated Master, but the choice of plastic looked like translucent wax. Supposedly, this "Vortex" series of figures is using a better grade of plastic. At least Gatwa's Doctor turned out very well.) Included is a maggot from "The Green Death", a time crystal from "The Time Monster" and an in scale sonic, all previously available accessories, just sporting new paint and/or alternate plastic selection.

But the featured side item is an electroplated version of Pertwee's sonic, originally available years ago with "glossy grey" paint to simulate the metal casing. Now it has a chrome finish. Plus, it creates three different sound effects depending upon the number of times the sliding shaft is quickly moved, the new sounds based upon effects used during Pertwee's run..

The "buzz" is that a few more "Vortex" editions will be released later this year. Imagine Tom Baker with an electroplated sonic! Though, Character has already released so many variants upon the 4th Doctor, I don't know what has not yet been done. the only twist would be the new approach to the heads, using plastic with skin tones and painting only the eyes, mouths and hair. (It's been argued the sculpts have nearly always been on point, but the application of paint to the entire face wound up "burying" the finer details in a layer of acrylic. I guess we'll find out

Here are rather unusual ray guns:
