"The 34th Rule" and "Rule 34"

I recently found out what the real Rule 34 is. Was someone having a laugh naming The 34th Rule, or does it predate the internet meme?

Rule 34 ("If it exists, there's porn of it") does sound an awful lot like a Ferengi rule of aquisition. They'd probably add "...for a price" at the end, though.

The 3rd-season DS9 episode "Destiny" established the 34th and 35th Rules of Acquisition as "War is good for business" and "Peace is good for business," respectively. The novel took its title from that.

Apparently "Rule 34" originated in a comic strip on a website that began in 2004, so it can't be from earlier than that. The 34th Rule was published in 1999, and "Destiny" came out in 1995.
