I watched it yesterday and I loved it! I've seen some people go with the relatively easy review of saying
Dark Fate is the best
Terminator movie since
Judgment Day. However, I'll do one better: It's the second best movie of the franchise after only
Judgment Day.
Much like
Judgment Day,
Dark Fate works best because of two elements: The focus on Sarah Connor's story and the relationship between the protectee and the good Terminator (granted Grace isn't really a Terminator but she fits the same role). The whole time, I expected Sarah to die by the end, either in grand sacrifice or just a casualty of war. Instead, the film leaves the door open for her to return as Dani's mentor.
I was genuinely shocked by the opening of the film, seeing one of the old T-800s gunning down John while Sarah's guard was down. I knew John was going to have a limited role in the film (based on the fact that Edward Furlong was returning but only briefly) but somehow I didn't see this coming. After everything Sarah went through, it was painful to watch that happen.
And that neatly lead into how how Arnold fit into this film, a puzzle that I couldn't figure out until I saw the opening. I love his different role in the film, as a Terminator who completed his mission but didn't change the future (thanks to destruction of Cyberdyne's work), which resulted him to go quietly into retirement...and began to learn (a la Data) what it means to be human. I'm a little iffy on the whole aging thing, but I really enjoyed the character development he went through.
My only real complaint about the film is that I think the film leaned a little too hard on the Grace flashbacks (particularly the final reveal that Dani is the resistance leader), but I still enjoyed seeing glimpses of the new, but still truly awful future.
One thing did niggle at the back of my mind: While they were ultimately successful in protecting Dani and potentially preserving her place in history, they didn't do anything to prevent the rise of Legion. I guess that's left for the potential sequel (I read somewhere about a planned trilogy), which is just as well.
Judgment Day did a great job of addressing both issues at once, whereas
Dark Fate wisely focused on just the one while also working to establish the new timeline and enemy without feeling overstuffed.
Unfortunately, it seems that the film hasn't performed well, so I fear we won't get a sequel despite being the first once of the last four films that actually deserves one.
