The first 2 terminators had a strong female lead. T3 also had a strong female lead opposite the make lead. Why did those 3 movies do well. I loved those first 3. So what's changed? Give your opinion and then I will give mine in that question.

The quality of the writing.

The article you linked to though asserts it's because of feminism.

The movie didn't fail because of some Incel garbage nonsense in a right wing rag, it failed because it's just not a good movie.

I liked this movie more than all of the others, except T2, and it's about even with T2 in my mind.

Also, for some perspective, T3 was the absolute worst movie in the franchise for me. Inflating breasts ftw, amirite?

Which is a metric ton of bullshit. This movie was very good at just treating the female leads like people who just happen to be female, IMHO. Certainly better than anything in the MCU so far.

Well you better go see it a ton of times to keep it staying a float because it's sinking fast.

Needed another twist. Without it it just felt like a retread. Something JJ Abrams would so.

I watched the film. It was a tenseful and annoying film. Tense as in, will they survive this encounter, and annoying as in, this film has a villain straight from the horror genre, a villain who doesn't know when to die. As well, as frustrating, as in I have seen this story line before and there is no big changes in the formula.

The new terminator presents a major problem - it is nearly indestructible, a bullet sponge. If they continue in their progression, the heroes will be facing a terminator which could not be destroyed with portable weapons or spinning turbines.

IMHO, they have ended the franchise with the second film.

Dark Fate couldn't conceivably wrecked the franchise more than Salvation and Genisys already did. It just doesn't have the wide appeal it once did. If Dark Fate had been the third movie rather than the sixth, the franchise would probably have more of a future in it.

People have said that with all the sequels. It's nothing new.

It failed worse the Genysis and it was on more screens. Fans thought they were going to course correct from the awful Genysis and what they did to John Connor. They studio and director decided to go a different route and obliterate John Connor and replace him. They didn't give the fans what they wanted so it's a big flop and no money for them. Too bad. Maybe they can make it up it rentals. Lol

Obviously NOT the fact of having female leads.

Yes this is quite a good article. Also if was written by a more liberal writer and even he thinks they went to far. Thanks for posting!

He at no stage says they “went too far.” He says the following:

Moreover, using the Force Awakens formula on a far-less viable franchise, complete with three female heroes (one of which is technically a senior citizen and another of which is Hispanic), is a cruel trap that allows folks to point and make “get woke/go broke” jokes.
Even that is in the context of following a long discussion about the under performance of the last 3 films and the reasons why Terminator doesn’t have the brand appeal of Star Wars or Jurassic Park.

Damn. This is another loss for Paramount.

Star Trek, Transformers (sans Bumblebee), GI Joe, TMNT and Terminator have all under performed for the studio.Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible/Jack Reacher films are the only bread winners for the studio.

Yeah well they still gave Star Trek as you said. They are relying to much on older properties and not looking for fresh ideas. Sad really.

I watched it yesterday and I loved it! I've seen some people go with the relatively easy review of saying Dark Fate is the best Terminator movie since Judgment Day. However, I'll do one better: It's the second best movie of the franchise after only Judgment Day.

Much like Judgment Day, Dark Fate works best because of two elements: The focus on Sarah Connor's story and the relationship between the protectee and the good Terminator (granted Grace isn't really a Terminator but she fits the same role). The whole time, I expected Sarah to die by the end, either in grand sacrifice or just a casualty of war. Instead, the film leaves the door open for her to return as Dani's mentor.

I was genuinely shocked by the opening of the film, seeing one of the old T-800s gunning down John while Sarah's guard was down. I knew John was going to have a limited role in the film (based on the fact that Edward Furlong was returning but only briefly) but somehow I didn't see this coming. After everything Sarah went through, it was painful to watch that happen.

And that neatly lead into how how Arnold fit into this film, a puzzle that I couldn't figure out until I saw the opening. I love his different role in the film, as a Terminator who completed his mission but didn't change the future (thanks to destruction of Cyberdyne's work), which resulted him to go quietly into retirement...and began to learn (a la Data) what it means to be human. I'm a little iffy on the whole aging thing, but I really enjoyed the character development he went through.

My only real complaint about the film is that I think the film leaned a little too hard on the Grace flashbacks (particularly the final reveal that Dani is the resistance leader), but I still enjoyed seeing glimpses of the new, but still truly awful future.

One thing did niggle at the back of my mind: While they were ultimately successful in protecting Dani and potentially preserving her place in history, they didn't do anything to prevent the rise of Legion. I guess that's left for the potential sequel (I read somewhere about a planned trilogy), which is just as well. Judgment Day did a great job of addressing both issues at once, whereas Dark Fate wisely focused on just the one while also working to establish the new timeline and enemy without feeling overstuffed.

Unfortunately, it seems that the film hasn't performed well, so I fear we won't get a sequel despite being the first once of the last four films that actually deserves one. :(
