Tal Celes and Other Lower Decks Characters

Dingo

Captain
Captain
Who else thinks that they should have been shown in other episodes other than the one or two they might've appeared in onscreen?

Personally I thought Celes' character had at least a subplot in her, maybe her growth from perpetual screwup to somewhat more competent sensor analyst in Astrometrics.

I would have loved to have seen those lower decks characters from Good Shepherd make one more cameo at least in Voyager, maybe showing the progress they'd all made since the episode.

I thought that Zoe McClellan did a brilliant job of playing Celes and was pretty happy to see her acting talents displayed in the JAG series as well.

Ah well, there's always fanfiction, as my Voyager fanfic in my signature entails.

We saw Celes at least once more.

But besides from this....this is Voyager, it doesn't know the meaning of the word continuity. We probably saw about 250 different faces all supposed to be representing 140 or so crewman (they could even figure out how many people were on the ship at any one time) thruout the course of the show.

I really liked the arrogant genius guy in that episode, though maybe there wasn't much sub-plot potential with him. The show was trying to preach to him that he shouldn't simply immerse himself in the theoretical aspect of science, but care more for its practical applications. Still, you've got to love some of these lines:

"do you really believe that childhood environment is more important than genetically driven behavior patterns?"

"conversation filled with unspoken assumptions."

"I'm a product of my nucleic acids, where and how it's raised are beside the point so if you're trying to understand me better, questions about my home planet are irrelevant."

"the term detected suggests a subconsciousness. This is a mindless astrophysical phenomena, nothing more."

"which is why I don't like space exploration. Stumbling from star to star like a drunken insect careening towards a light source is not my idea of a dignified existence."

There is something so appreciable about him despite his obnoxious nature. It's as though every line he says contains some form of satire, and you can sympathize as to why such a person would seek solitude. The show could've used just a bit more of him, but as Jaespol said, the show's lack of continuity is one of its major flaws.

I know she was in Haunting of Deck 12 and briefly seen in Work Force, I was talking about more than just brief appearances. Oh well, there's always my fanfic...

I personally didn't like Harren because he was an ass. Those sort of people are the sort that piss me off on a routine basis with their arrogance. Again, there's always fanfic, I figure Harren could use a good beating.

I didn't understand how he could seriously think that the reason for his profession was genetic. I mean what a load of rubbish, that's like believing in faith thru genetics.
Of course nurture has a role to play along with nature. What a d-bag.

Leverage and scale.

The more an actor (Women are actors too, I find actress to be a very demeaning word.) is on screen, the more her rate of pay increases as to in relation to the amount of time she works on that screen to get bread and butter. It is geometrically cheaper to keep hiring new dynamic people than to admit to the ones at hand that they deserve to be paid more and more....

I loved it after a couple years on star gate evey other episode old faces would just keep showing up, and old problems that they thought had been put to rest actually had not been put to rest, but then Voyager wasn't standing still like the people in those stories that the same back drop was in their face all the time.

I liked Celes too, I usually pair her with Harry Kim. I also kind of like Mort Harren, I've always wanted to read or write Seven and Harren interacting. I know they would probably rub each other the wrong way LOL, but I think it could be a lot of fun.

My daughter uses action figures to make other characters. We have plans to turn my six inch Seska into Celes lol.

If you want to read Seven and Celes interacting read this fic: Back and Forth: A Bajoran's Tale. (Warning, contains femmslash)

Not a fan of Harren, I probably might kill him off in my fanfic.

As stated, I've always got fanfiction and my own fanfic has Celes playing a big part in helping her fellow stranded away team members out, Brit, did you ever get a chance to read my fic? Where's a link to some of your Celes stories?

Harren was an asshole and the sort of character I just love to hate and love to kill off in fanfiction, usually in painful and or horrific ways.

My apologies if this has already been addressed elsewhere, but I have a quick question. I seem to remember her being referred to as "Crewman Celes", and her friends calling her "Tal". By Bajoran naming conventions, wouldn't she be Celes Tal? Yet, everywhere I look, people call her Tal Celes.

I've noticed that too. Myself and Duncan McLeod, another fanfiction writer, have her called Celes Tal in our works. No need to apologize.

I recall in the TNG episode Ensign Ro a number of Bajorans who live in Federation territory switch their names around to fit in with human naming conventions and that's why my interpretation of Celes goes around being called Tal Celes instead of Celes Tal.

I'd say the writers simply didn't know or care. Or her real name was Celes Tal.

It seems no one mentioned the remaining character who was constantly afraid of becoming sick.

There was the Bolian, Chell, who appeared a couple of times. He was also in the Elite Force video games as a prominent character.

I always wondered why Voyager didn't use those sorts of character more often. TNG always had Barclay, O'Brien, and Ogawa around, and frequently used minor guests characters at the helm after Wesley left. They only added a bit of minor continuity that didn't detract from the main cast.

Wht are you talkign about?

O'Brien was so magnetic and marvelous they gave him his own show.

There was a glitch in the typesetting for the first episode, but he was supposed to get top billing. Although, he just thought that it would be nice to let Avery think that he's headlining the show.

What a nice guy, eh?

You joke, but O'Brien's presence on the spinoff was a big draw for TNG fans.

I joke? Hell no.

He was married to the most beautiful woman on the station, and half the stories each season had him in a buddy flick with that dumb kid who hangs out in sick bay. And worst come to worst when you need to get a Klingon Drunk, who but an Irishman can match him shot for shot?

One of the original rejected titles for deep Space Nine was:"Miles in Space" but then they were afraid that the idiots would ask why nothing was measured in space miles. Half the job of being a Producer is rounding idiots off at the pass.

Guy Gardener did make a good point a few posts, though for the sake of creativity I disagree with the actions of the producers he mentions:

It might have been cheaper for newer faces to pop in every so often, but it was certainly unappealing to say the least. I would much rather have seen some of those lower decks characters that appeared in one or two episodes a little more often than I did.

I always thought that VGR, being a smaller, isolated ship and all, had a greater potential for having recurring characters like this than even DS9. We could have easily met the entire 145+ crew in those seven years.

And yet, no.
