Survivor: Game Changers/The Amazing Race (Spring 2017)

Survivor auction was more entertaining when it was about food and not just about everyone niggling for an advantage.

Agreed. It was also more interesting before all those food reward challenges. It used to that a reward challenge might get you a taste of a slice of pizza. Now they have a feast every episode.

Why are all the Big Brother commercials focusing on Julie Chen so much? Does most of the audience actually like the Chenbot? I thought she is only the host of Big Brother because her husband is the head of the network.

No, I don't miss Julie Chen. She's a reason not to watch.

It could be charitably said that she's the only person who has ever appeared in every season, and so she's the "face" of the show, so to speak.

And no, I don't cry when I don't see her.

Just for the hell of it, they should mix up the CBS reality show hosts, and let each of them host a different one. Put Julie Chen on Survivor, and she wouldn't last 10 minutes without her high heels and designer dresses and hair and makeup stylists. The men would do fine - actually, Phil Keoghan was one of the contenders for the host of Survivor.

Although I think Jeff Probst might snicker at how tame some of the Big Brother challenges are (okay, there have been a few that are as physically grueling as anything on Survivor).

So... any thoughts on tonight's finale? I'm pleased that one half of the winning team won. Seems a shame to have to share it with such a chronically whiny complainer.

They can't replace her with a better host because of who her husband is. Maybe they could try installing her emotion chip to make her more bearable.

I don't remember Chen being in season 1, but I barely watched any of that since it wasn't a game.

So I think I get now why Brooke & Scott were successful after Brooke started being a little less negative. Scott said "Oh yeah, they went there in season 9". To have that kind of memory, he must have watched every episode at least twice. He had that insight about checking the bag last so his bag would come out first. He sees a guy in yellow and immediately thinks that person has a clue. He knows the show so well he can outsmart the game.

I think the guy with only one leg won the first season... basically the complaint was that all the interesting people got voted out first. So they completely revamped the show's concept to have the voting done by the contestants, not the at-home audience. I didn't see very many episodes, but those I did see were godawful boring.

I'm okay with Scott and Brooke winning. Well, I'm okay with him winning. It's too bad he and Tara weren't paired. I'd have enjoyed that team.

Are they allowed to keep any notes about where they've been, and in what order, or do they have to memorize everything?

On previous final challenges like this I've seen teams pull out notebooks full of details on where they were, what position they placed in, who performed what challenges, etc.

Season 1 of Big Brother is how it works in all other countries. But everyone thought it was boring so they made it comfy Survivor, and frankly it actually works half the time that way if they manage to get decent people in the house.

I saw like three or four episodes. I'm not sure I agree the people voted out early were more interesting than the people voted out later, but with no catalyst for conflict you're just watching a bunch of shallow hotties hanging out.

The Big Brother fans do actually like Chen. She has been on since season 1 and at first there were the complaints about her being robotic (hence "Chenbot"), but since then she has become more of a fan of the show herself, and fans have come to have a soft spot for her. In interviews during the season she will even talk about her favorites or make judgments of certain houseguests, which is unusual for a host but which fans respect.

But, the reason she's in all the commercials is because they have no other footage to show. They don't announce the new houseguests, or even release the new house photos, until about a week and a half before the show starts. And even once we know them, the show hasn't started filming yet so there's no footage except for some initial interviews. About a week or two from now you will start seeing commercials with the actual new houseguests.

Speaking as a BB fan, Chen is only bearable when she is poking fun at herself (she has begun to make fun of the "But first" line of hers). For BB Canada, they had the houseguests spouting silly lines around the space theme they had going on, so it could be worse for you guys south of the border.

I didn't bother watching BB Canada, even though the space theme grabbed my notice. Not one of the clips in the commercials showed people acting in any other way than being an utter goofball (in an unamusing way), so I just turned the TV off.

So I take it there's more scripted material in the Canadian version?

Chen has one facial expression, one angle she holds her head, and one angle the camera is allowed to shoot her.

Also clearly she did not have to audition for the job, which makes me resent her more. Might be some talented charismatic woman who expresses human emotions but didn't get her big break on BB or The Talk because the network head gave it to his wife.
