Supernatural 5x12 "Swap Meat" discussion thread/spoilerish

Another new episode tonight, good people. I may be stuck at work, *sob* so I'll be watching via DVR. Just wanted to get the thread started. Have fun discussing.

Client canceled. He's afraid of a little ice...which in all fairness may turn into a full fledged ice storm by tonight. Oh joy oh joy. West OKC is suffering some power outages already. I didn't lose power in the last storm. I hope I don't tonight.

Another very average outing in my opinion.

I simply don't care for the silly slapstick schtick the show has seemingly embraced more than any other season. I guess they are attempting to play to some of the targeted CW crowd but I find it unfunny, hackneyed and seriously clashes with the whole darker tone of the series that I want more of.

I honestly was tempted to fast forward through most of it--it did pick up slightly about the time the big reveal occurred about the trio's plan for Dean. I would take issue with the demon just leaving Sam inside Gary alive. They don't need his soul just his body as a vessel which she knew she had at that point.

And just a minor nit but it should have been Gary's voice on those voice mails that Dean was playing back--it sounded to me, but I could be wrong, that it was Jared's voice.

The cougar bit was good but the rest of the attempted comedy accompanying the swap was boring and I was surprised how little they exploited it compared to other body swap episodes in tv history.

Truthfully if I hadn't been invested in the show since the beginning and was interested in how the Apocalypse arc plays out I'd seriously consider dropping the show--it simply isn't holding my attention. Right now the only solid episodes this season have been the big mythology episodes--"Children are Our Future" and "Abandon all Hope"--that precede the breaks in the show's run. There were a few other episodes that were decent but for the most part I've been unimpressed.

C- maybe a C.

Hmmm.....last week's eppy was much better. I'm ready for the myth arc to recommence next week. Young John and Mary, yes! Body swapping? Not so much. Can't win them all.

If I hadn't read a few spoilers and didn't know that the show is going to start again with the myth arc in a big way in the next few weeks, I'd be more concerned. This episode just didn't to serve a purpose. Last week's did in a big way with the creepy reveal of their unresolved issues, but this one seemed throw away. Sure there was some funny stuff, but it wasn't necessary.

For the most part I like the levity, but for some reason tonight just didn't click for me. I loved last week's episode. I'm sure I'll love next week's, but tonight didn't ring my bell. Still better than Heroes by a mile, though. ;)

It was OK, but I'm not a big fan of 'body-swapping' stories. Next weeks looks pretty good.

It was a little wierd at the end of this episode, with everyone all having a happy ending - forgetting there's the dead body of their friend in the basement to deal with.

Really good to hear, I want the arcs back--Castiel is sorely missed. This episode and last weeks had their moments, but I find Supernatural's standalone episodes this season to be lacking. The Lucifer/Apocalypse arc is so much more compelling than what we've had these past two weeks.

I thought tonights ep was decent, it wasn't that bad, although I think Gary and the girl are going to be in for a rude awakening when they find out their friend got his heart ripped out or just impaled? Nice, Anna's back next week too, the actress looks so much more docile and petite on Mad Men

I was really looking forward to this episode...and I confess myself a tad disappointed. I wish they had done a little bit more with them LOOKING like their new meatsuits. At least ONE scene of the kid acting like Sam without looking like him. The opening scene in the bar...THAT was the kind of hijinks I was looking forward to from a body swap episode.

I think the highlight of the episode was the girl...Laura?...being demon possessed. She really got the demon attitude right. I also wish they had been able to go a little farther with the idea of Gary being talked into agreeing to let Lucifer take Sam's meatsuit. I wonder if now that the idea's been given to the demons they might not try it again. I also had to wonder how it took Dean so long to realize he WASN'T SAM and to actually listen to his messages.

I confess...I guess I'm an odd ball. I like the one off episodes like this. While season 2 was my real favorite, I actually liked most of season 1 (outside of Route 666, but seriously who likes that episode?) and 3 was pretty much OK and 4 not so much. Then again I don't like the way Sam was painted in such a bad light the whole season for doing something that Dean's choice lead him to. What's dead should stay dead and Dean should have remembered that in Cold Oak. Sure he was NEARLY dead twice, but he never ACTUALLY died, unlike Sam. Then again there would be no Sam if he was dead after season 2...so I don't know what to think sometimes.

I've liked 5 so far, but mostly for the wacky one offs like Changing Channels and the Real Ghostbusters. I kind of wish the show would go back to its urban legend roots a bit. Abandon All Hope was almost TOO heavy for me and I'm getting tired of this angel stuff. It also seems wrong to me that they've added a third lead. No offense to Misha Collins...but the show's always been about the brothers NOT the brothers plus Castiel.

Sorry for the rant, but I think it goes along with the theme of what others have been talking about.

Next week does look good...Sam finally gets in on the time travel action with Dean and we get to see young Mary again.

You aren't ranting. You're expressing opinion. It's all cool and the gang here in the SPN threads. Can't agree about Castiel, though. I think he was an excellent addition and they haven't overused him IMO. The girl's name was Nora, I believe. It's hard to believe that's Kitty Romano. She looks so bloody young and she's 29 in real life.

did you guys notice any continuity issues at the beginning with Sam and the Daiquiri? Being somewhat full in one shot, while in other shots not so much? haha somebody should replace that script supervisor. And I would be happy to fill in. :)

Truthfully if I hadn't been invested in the show since the beginning and was interested in how the Apocalypse arc plays out I'd seriously consider dropping the show--

I have to agree. I went through the first 4 seasons on dvd in 2009 at a friend's request. I thought there was somewhat of a dropoff in season 4, but was optimistic at season 5.

Right now it's a major disappointment. Personally, I think they went into the apocalypse arc too quickly and should have kept it in the background longer.

Change one or two lines of dialogue and last night's episode could have been in season 1.

Really? I thought season 4 was the best. I really loved it. I've loved a lot of eps in season five, but now I'm impatient for the apocalypse storyline to get back in gear. Next week's episode will be much better. Much. They get back to business.

Well... I started watching supernatural right after deans rebirth and havn't seen any of the episodes before that...
and I think these current episodes since then are great... would I be disappointed with the ones before that?

I don't think you'd be disappointed, Lt. Trull. Not after midway through season one, anyway. The story really started to pick up at that point. If you like four and five, you'll definitely enjoy seasons two and three. Season one? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on your tastes.

I'm happy that I am generally oblivious to such things because I'm sure there's plenty of those kind of errors in shows.

I would have been more content with this episode if Gary hadn't wanted to kill Dean. To get a slap on the wrist after that just didn't feel right.

Have they ever done that exorcism bit before? Seems like a nice tool to have. Maybe it only works on really minor demons or something?

Dean was never shown to be very good at performing an exorcism from memory in the past. He must have been practicing a lot lately. And even this time he still messed up the final word (and I'm shocked it worked when Gary corrected him; guess the exorcism doesn't have to be uninterrupted afterall).

Overall I thought it was a good episode. I enjoyed the humor, as I usually do, but liked that the undertone was all about the big arc rather than just another standalone. We basically found out that the brothers have a hit on them that extends to every witch in creation, which coincides with what the angels are doing, too. As if their life wasn't bad enough.

I did find it odd that they don't actually need Sam's permission to use his body. If anyone can slide in there, getting past every tattoo and protective charm they have as if they didn't exist, why is Lucifer even remotely worried about the whole thing? The angels, too, for that matter.
