Supergirl season 4

I liked the first 3 seasons of this show but geez I am finding season 4 a bit of a struggle to get through. What are other people's reactions to this show here? You either love it or hate it and one thing I get annoyed with is the lead characters unstoppable optimism which in some places she belts you the viewer on the head with it and her supporting characters must probably want to strangle her.

I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts here. I've mentioned this show a few times on TBBS but yeah I'm in the middle of season 4 and wanting to take a long break.

Season four was my favorite of the series, with the possible exception of the first. I found it chock full of great concepts, characters/actors, and a political allegory that was timely and on-point. Not sure at all why this is the season where your interest would start to flag, since I thought it came out of the gate remarkably strong and stayed that way, without the occasional storytelling stumbles of the preceding two years.

Anyway, if you stop now, you'll miss an improbable casting choice later in the season that proves to be a stroke of utter genius.

It's not bad. It does get you thinking I just found it a bit heavy handed with the messaging if that makes sense. The people who would watch the show would already get all the things they are saying but I feel like they are trying to beat you on the head with the messages, which are things I already get and would support. I'll finish the season but so far I feel like season 2 and 3 were my favourites. Isn't season 5 when a fan favourite turns bad girl?

Season 4 was a great season for me too--the last good season of the series. I don't really rank seasons, but the first four years of this show were as strong as any Supers series produced. It is a shame it fell off so sharply afterwards, but I did watch it until the end.

I will finish the whole run too, just my experience is different to everyone else and I liked seasons 2 and 3 more so far.

If you were to go back and read the original threads, you'll see that Season 4 (the first half) was contentious with a certain segment of the TrekBBS. I think a poster may even have left the board over it. At the time the huge issue was people being angry that Kara was stronger than Clark and then that the show got "political" regarding the immigration story line. Yeah, the allegory is a bit on the nose but no more so than Star Trek or Stargate can be.

Yes. It's actually maybe the strongest aspect of that season (though it kind of wore out its welcome for me after a while).

If it's the poster I'm thinking of, he didn't leave voluntarily.

Oh I get that believe me. I've seen that happen on tons of boards I used to be on. I'm not going to hyperventilate about the messaging, I think it's appropriate if at times a little heavy handed. So I'm glad we can have a discussion like this and not get angry. The whole Kara is stronger then Kal thing is kind of what they did in the comics anyway didn't they?

I'm sticking with the show to the very end but probably take my time as its all on dvd anyway so I can just go through them when I feel more inclined.

The message season 4 was putting out was one of the best serialised tv has put out in ages.

The way it did was forced and not well executed at times. When you want to fight oppression and hatred you want to do it with education and thoughtfulness, not a 'we're better than you and you suck' attitude. It fails to reach the minds you're trying to educate (read; rightwing and orange-skinned douchebag supporters) and only makes them more militant.

Reaching the ignorant and hateful is a tricky thing. Supergirl season 4 was more about teaching those that support equality that they are right than trying to give those that preach hatred that there is more than oppression.

They did try to offer some nuance and balance. They devoted the entire "Man of Steel" episode to exploring Lockwood's history and what led him to become "Agent Liberty." And Manchester Black was presented as an example of the opposition going too far (he even branded himself the "intolerant Left" at one point).

But in the end, you can only make bigots and xenophobes just so understandable and sympathetic. Bottom line, they are the bad guys, in reality as well as fiction.

BTW, just this week I started a complete series rewatch. I haven't seen the first season since probably 2016 (when the Blu-ray set was released), and it's amazing. After the doldrums of the show's final couple of seasons, I'm reminded vividly of why I fell in love with it in the first place.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I really enjoyed Season 4, the character @The Realist mentioned is his first post is amazing, one of the best parts of the series, and one of my favorite on-screen versions of the that character. They might even by my absolute favorite, there's only one I can think of that I might put above them, but I haven't seen them in ages, so I can't judge for sure.

Exactly the attitude that drove me out of the left.

That said, I agree with everybody who thinks the earlier seasons of Supergirl are the best. Not the last two.

I'm five episodes into this season on my rewatch, and it's only reinforcing my impression that it was Supergirl's best. The themes are relevant, powerful, and poignant, the character work is excellent, and Brainy and Nia are great additions to the cast. Lockwood is the show's best villain to this point, a complex and challenging antagonist superbly played by Sam Witwer. Manchester Black has only appeared in one episode so far, but already makes a strong impression, and I remember that he only gets better from here. And Red Daughter and Lex Luthor are still waiting in the wings! The show was really firing on all cylinders in its fourth season.

I did finish season 4 and after having done that my opinion did change a lot. I ended up liking it more but Kara does rub me the wrong way when she is Supergirl because that constant optimism.. I found that the only annoying thing, the rest I liked.
