I will say this I love Boimler describing the 23rd century as the "Golden Age of Exploration." It seems like by the 24th century and 25th century, they have started to forgotten their roots with their endless conflicts for a nearly 100 years. (Klingon Wars non stop, Cardassian wars, Dominon War, the Borg) I hope if there is a 25th century show, we get back to them actually exploring.

Anyone notice a weird cut or something in the teaser/intro?

Mariner says something like "It's like any other portal and we're just running scans."
Then Boimler says "Because it might do something".

It just feels like a line is missing, but I'm like on my 5th watch of the episode so maybe I've lost my mind. lol

I hate Lower Decks and wish agonizing painful deaths on all of the characters whenever I try to watch so much as a 30 second clip of the show.

This episode didn't change my mind.

In "seasons" that only have 10 episodes, wasting one on this wretched crew with their unprofessional, spoiled brats, is a shame. There are actually good Trek shows they could have crossed over with, instead of this trash show.

And before someone says "nobody is forcing you to watch it," as seems to be a ridiculous comment: you're right. Nobody forced me to watch this episode. But they did include characters I love from a show I love in a franchise I love.

They just put the fictional character equivalent of dog crap all over what is otherwise a delicious steak.

If I hated Lower Decks yesterday, I hate it even more today for ruining this episode and wasting my time and taking up time that could have been spent on characters I give a damn about.

There was an exiled Cardassian living on Vulcan in this time according to DS9.
At least in that case it's a different timeline.

People sure do love to scream about canon not living up to the fanfic they're written in their heads, when the actual canon doesn't fit their fanfic.

Anyway, the idea that Starfleet doesn't know about Cardassians or Bajorans yet is silly and not canon at all.

You're in rant mode, so you're not thinking straight, but the answer to that is no.

  • An SNW crossover with Picard wouldn't work. And that's another Star Trek show you hate with the burning passion of 1,000 suns. So you wouldn't be too thrilled with that one either.
  • An SNW crossover with Discovery basically already happened with DSC Season 2.
  • An SNW crossover with Prodigy would hit differently, and the kids on that show wouldn't know much about Federation History.
So Lower Decks is the only current Star Trek show that SNW could crossover with.

So after a second watching, I give it an 8 overall. On story alone it’s a 6, but it’s fun and a bit of lighthearted goofiness akin to the older days is silly Trek episodes.

I just like my silly pretend spaceship show

That's because fans build up assumptions in their minds based on various bits and stories over the years.

Wonderful. One of the best Trek episodes - probably how I’d be reacting if I ended up on set. Great nods to Enterprise as well. Just fantastic writing and the human actors doing Mariner and Boimler were great. Thank you writers!

An exciting way to have given it more nerd action would’ve been for the Nx01 to warp in….. I’d assume only Phlox would be still alive and John Billingsley is an amazing actor.

I have to admit they shouldnt have done it. Lower decks is a comedy on the level of futurama. Star trek while havng comedy in the past never got that silly. Crossing over with a cartoon was a jump the shark moment for star trek. Spock is currently becoming a joke after this episode. I was really enjoying the show up to this point but wow bad choice. So now a silly cartoon is part of canon? Not even sure how that would fit. Weve had 3 time travel eps in a season and a half and this one was the worst. This was on the level of lost in spsce(1960s) series silliness. No thank you.

Boimler called Ortegas a war hero. Does he mean like in the Klingon War? Because I can't think of any other war in the TOS timeframe that Ortegas would theoretically be a hero in.
Of course it does. Ortegas has made several references to serving in that war, including this episode. And the next episode seems to reference it as well.

“Those Old Scientists” is an prime example of why I may have to reconsider my personal ranking of the Star Trek series. It used to be

1. DS9
2. TOS
3. TNG
4. SNW
5. LDS
6 - 10. all the rest

But after last night’s Christmas in July, SNW has vaulted over TNG and TOS and is now breathing down the neck of DS9, and I think LDS may have moved up a notch as well. Strange New Worlds has made Star Trek FUN again. Easily my favorite episode of the season… but let’s see how “Susbpace Rhapsody” goes. (I’m a sucker for a good musical episode!)

Yes.

Always has been.

I watched a few episodes of that show. Its totally a farce. How can something like even exist after tng? Idiotic. I thought these were going to be different versions of the lower deck characters not coming straight from the cartoon and actuallt acknowledging it. Also boimer pretty much knows the snw world looks more real. So he knows his world looks like a cartoon. Come on man. How does it even fit in any previous trek canon?

Right next to TAS and the literal devil being real.

Canon is the officoal body of work. It's officially there. Continuity is another question.

Boimler felt like Boimler, but something felt off about how Tawny portrayed Mariner. I don't know how to put it into words, but she didn't feel quite like Mariner. I don't know if it was the writing or what.
Probably because she had to rein it in a bit in front of Pike and Uhura.
