Stewart's Career

Patrick Stewart is a really good actor. No one can take away the great performances he gave on TNG. I rib the character sometime for 'giving up' to easily in BOBW, but it doesn't change my respect for the actor...

Had TNG not dropped into his lap, would Patrick Stewart even be "known" outside of the scifi/fanatsy genre? Lifeforce and Dune were hardly performances to hang a hat on....and, aside from the XMEN series, can it be said his movie career has been stellar? No. Will he ever be nominated for an academy award? Who is to say.

But as time goes on I just see Patrick Steward fading into the background. Maybe that is by choice. TNG cost him a marriage, and who knows, perhaps he has tired of the game. Did he become typecasted because of TNG? I would say, yeah, to a degree. But he was no young chicken when TNG came along. It wasn't as if he was in the upper level of British actors. In fact, I didn't even really know who he was until my friend say "Hey,thats the bald dude from Lifeforce". The only thing I remembered about that movie was the naked vampire chick walking around...and, sorry, but THAT was the best part of that movie..

Patrick Stewart. Really good actor. A stage actor...where would he have been without TNG?

I think he would have stayed first and foremost a stage actor for a long time and I can't be certain if he would have landed his role in X-Men without TNG to push him into the public eye. I'd like to think so, but I can't be sure. I'm sure he would have still had minor roles in movies and television, most Shakespearean actors do. He's a pretty unique individual, so who knows, maybe something else prominent would have landed his way. There's just no way to know.

Patrick's had a great career. It's something I'd be jealous of if I were an actor. He's been in a massively sucessful TV series with a mainstream and cult following. He's had a great stage career, before and after TNG and he's been in a sucessful film franchise. He's guest starred in tv and he's had a couple of tv series in his own right. That can't be bad. Throw into the mix that he's adored by his fans and a wealthy man, he's got it made career-wise. I don't know where he would have been had TNG not come along and I don't really know enough about the ins and outs of his career at that time to speculate.

I enjoyed the movie where is thought he was a spy...or was he?......it was interesting.

When I found out Stewart was cast as Picard in TNG, I knew he was familiar. Then I remembered he played one of the knights in Excalibur, the excellent John Boorman version of the King Arthur legend. But certainly, TNG gave him a notoriety he never would've experienced had he just done British theatre work, or even just Dune and Excalibur. He is in his mid-60s, I think, so he may actively want to slow down a bit. Didn't he take himself out of consideration to play Prof. X again, hence the unusual way they dealt with his character in X-Men 3? -- RR

I actually liked him in CONSPIRACY THEORY..there is nothing wrong with Patrick Stewart, he is a great actor. But is he in the upper class of British actors? Mcellan, Connery, Cain, McGreggor, Linch? I don't think so and that is too bad.

I'm not sure why Patrick doesn't have the same rep. I think if he keeps racking up acclaimed Shakespeare productions the way he has been doing, I think he might get there.

I think his counterpart, Ben Kinsgley, is better respected. Then again, he is an academy award actor and does, to his credit, different things all the time...Maybe Patrick just doesn't want to go there. He is content, and that is cool too.....

Jaws: The Revenge was one of Cain's better moments, right?

I must admit I always look out for Patrick on the Queen's Birthday and New Year's honours lists, but he's never there.

I was really lucky to see Patrick Stewart perform in The Tempest and Antony and Cleopatra when the Royal Shakespeare Company came to town two years ago. He's a tremendously good actor. I was quite jealous of the people who took Shakespeare that semester, though - I heard he actually made an appearance in class. I'd just taken that same class over spring/summer term, and had I known, I think I would have delayed taking it for a semester.
