Starlog Magazine: Revisiting the past...

Very cool. To be able to read those old articles, to gain the perspective on classic material from the people who first experienced it.

Fantastic. Starlog was a great source of news in the pre-Internet days, but I really loved it for the historical articles.

Ive seen this. Anyone who wasnt a genre fan before the early to mid 90s doesnt realize the effect of technology on fandom. Starlog was our internet!! I had over 175 issues of Starlog, I bought back issues. Sometimes Im sad I sold them, but this kind of makes up for it.

RAMA

I still have many issues from the 80's put away ;) It was indeed our internet back then.

I too enjoyed the earlier "retrospectives" most all. At least from that perspective, they could work from more accurate information (in theory). Kind of a "Cinefastastique - Light" for the more casual reader.

It's the publication that "prepared" me for the PBS broadcasts of "Doctor Who". During the mid summer of 1982, I learned that WFSU was going to start airing reruns of the iconic BBC SF series, so I pulled issue # 23 from my collection because it contained a substantial article along with an episode guide for Tom Baker's first 4 series. Reading that information allowed me to tune in that late August afternoon without scratching my head wondering, "What on earth is THIS??!!!" ;)

Sincerely,

Bill

Wow. I had stack of Starlogs in my room for years. It really was the "internet" for me and all my geekdom.

I loved Starlog. It was the publication for fans of genre. I had lots and lots of magazines in my spare room for years, but the passing of the years and the need for space eventually saw them go. I still have some copies of issues that I just couldn't bear to part with. The magazine was relatively easy to come by in the UK, but it was also relatively expensive. I recall that retailers often just charged in sterling whatever the cover price was in dollars. It was often a considered purchase for a UK student back in the 80s.

is there a list which describes each issue (or where can search)...for example, I am interested what was written about Spock's death in Star Trek II.

I have NO idea what issue that would be...

A childhood friend gave me his copy of the debut issue, but not before he half heartedly "colored" the Filmation portraits...in marker pens (that bled through the page). My first purchased volume was issue 6. By the time I collected 4 or 5 more, I ordered the "missing" back issues, 2 through 5.

When the local newsstand bungled its order of a couple of issues, I opted to subscribe by mail, which was cheaper anyway. I collected them diligently into the early "hundreds", but by that time, more than half the pages were ads and most of the articles seemed to be "promotional" material for upcoming productions, which meant they could reveal only so much. So I eventually let my subscription lapse.

What was really cool were those early articles about Star Trek possibly getting revived. One issue would hint it was coming back as a series. A later issue would imply a "made for TV" movie. Yet another would speculate about a "frugal" theatrical relase. Then it would mention a series again, only this time as the "anchor" series for a 4th network. Those early articles that kept refuting earlier "information" were both entertaining and infuriating! Make up your bloody minds!!!

Well, read them for yourselves and grin about "what we now know".

Sincerely,

Bill

Wooo! I can't wait for Superman 3! The effects looks terrific. There's supposed to be a video game sequence that looks amazing

I still have a ton of issues somewhere, in one of my storage boxes. I'm a saver. :D

I use the like the readers letter's it was basically the 80's version of a scifi forum LOL

I miss their stores, they had two in the area. One in the Garden State Plaza, which was small and the other was a stand alone store in the town of Ridgewood NJ. The one in Ridgewood was very big, would pick up action figures there. The stores only lasted a few years, in fact the space in Ridgewood is now a Starbucks.
