If they really wanted this to be an isolated story it should have taken place on another ship. Putting it on Discovery ties those questions to the show. Is it relevant to DSC? Or is it another possible future episode that really isn't cannon because it may or may not happen or may or may not be in this universe?

Would you be disappointed if these loose threads tie into DSC season 2?

Why would I be disappointed?

I said having it tie in is unnecessary to enjoy it. I didn't say it was unwelcome.

Is everyone ok out there?

You know what I mean. It's a possible future in-universe.

Assuming it really is the future. Aside from Zora, there's not a lot of proof of that, is there?

And I hate to keep bringing this up...but does that really look like a thousand-year-old ship? ;)

Russia under Vladimir Putin is basically the Soviet Union all over again. All that's missing is the name.
I know what you mean. Had to do that though. :D
The thousand year thing, well, it's in space and seems like there was enough power going for the ship to maintain itself, deflect off the rare micrometeorite or move out of the way or something larger. It would seem like while evolving Zora didn't may much attention to outside comms traffic, as she didn't know humans had settled on Alcor IV, though she knew where it was and what the fauna was like, there, nor did she apparently do much maintanence on unused areas as the bridge was all dusty. Why bother, if no one's there.

If it had been in a more "empty" area of space, it might have attracted a small halo of particles over time, but it seemed like it was in one of those very Trekky lightening-nebulae that don't really exist so I have no idea what conditions should be like in them.

I won't say anything specifically about Russia being the Soviet Union redux except to say its just symptomatic to this great urge towards nationalism that is going around the world lately. It's a sometimes-violent always-unpleasant backlash to the reality that society and culture is growing more global all the time. I don't want to get too political but one thing I believe with in Star Trek is that the world desperately needs a world-wide government, preferably a well educated democracy, non-preferably a benevolent despocy, to move society forward and into the next stage. We lack a frontier and it's going to kill us.

Finally watched it. What a beautiful hommage to Homer's Odyssey. It shows how timeless those stories are, that they work even in that setting, maybe even better now.

Can I ask a really dumb question?
You are at this point the nth person writing it's a hommage to Homer's Odyssee. Now, I have read the Odyssee. A long time ago, so the memory is a bit fuzzy. But I don't really feel that big of a connection. Now, of course I see lots and lots of references to 2001: A space Odyssee (having a main ship called "Discovery" only being one of them). But that movie did actually follow events of the Odyssee pretty close, at least so far that I - not an expert on it - noticed the similarities.

So, just asking for a dumb friend (okay, me...): Could you elaborate a little what exactly are the big connections of this short to Homer's original Odyssee?

not a huge connection, but Odysseus spent 10 years in theTrojan war followed by repeated misadventures trying to get home. At one point he landed on Ogygia (spelling?) where Calypso lived. She took care of him and enchanted him and loved him. He spent 7 years, but when he began to miss his wife, Athena implored Zeus to free him. Zeus sent Hermes with a Cease and Desist order, and she reluctantly let him go.

So some things same, some not so same.

It's just an adaptation of a segment of Odyssey, specifically the segment with Calypso (hence the name.)

Here's the wikipedia page.

Watched it more carefully. The high level story is fine, but not the details. Maybe write it off as A possible future, not necessarily in the PU.

Computer reminded me of Gideon from DC’s Legends.
I love the actress who voices Gideon, her voice is sexy; She herself is incredibly beautiful.

I would hire her to be the main voice of all StarFleet computers if possible =D

Aldis Hodge, I loved the actor when he was Alec Hardison on Leverage.

So having him appear in this short was a instant win for me!

I think it's kind of sad that people can't enjoy a wonderful little story that was almost perfectly written, acted, and presented without getting all wrapped around the axle with ponderous questions.

This is an isolated story. The point isn't to understand every little thing and how it all weaves into the intricate tapestry of Trek history. It's to enjoy the story. Period.

Glad that most people seem to have gotten it though!

I read your post more as stating that it was in fact an isolated story and worrying about the details was, sadly, contradictory to enjoying it. It seemed like a reasonable and efficient question to ask. Why that would lead to your question is almost as mysterious as why the crew would abandon a pristine ship in a pocket of space.

My head cannon a few hours later is that the AI was evil but they did not want to kill it and they parked it in a nebula and also left warning beacons to keep people away. In that time the AI evolved largely through self reflection and entertaining itself with literature and movies. I.e. it was only evil when it was a child and eventually grew out of it. I think I might be disappointed if they do tie it in. But maybe that's the wine typing.

Worrying about the details over enjoyment of the story is missing the forest for the trees. Star Trek is about a hopeful future for humanity, not ships, phasers and timelines. This was a perfect example. Two lost souls find each other and care for each other, one just happens to be human and the other an AI. Other shows would have the AI trap him out of a twisted obsession, but Zora lets me go because she understands how much it means to him. It’s beautiful. If someone can’t enjoy that because the holograms don’t fit in with a show created decades before they became a concept, then I pity them.

Sure. Sounds good.

Does it matter to the story why the ship was left alone for 1,000 years? No. It’s about a lonely man and a lonely AI. I don’t need any answers. I’d honestly love more stories like this.

I hope they eventually just make a Trek anthology series and it’s just single unconnected stories in the Star Trek universe.

So many Star Trek fans have unfortunately migrated their liking of the franchise away from simple enjoyment and gravitated almost entirely toward the world-building and continuity aspects, though (which I personally don't give a shit about).

As much as I totally agree with you, I feel like this would never work. Just look at all the people clamoring for "answers" after Calypso. It's not about how it all "fits into the universe." It's just a small, intimate little story set in the Star Trek world. It doesn't have to mean something grand or fit into a massive narrative for it to be enjoyed.

I swear, people are really fucking weird sometimes.

I have a feeling they'll introduce Zora in Season 2. And she'll be a normal ship's computer in the beginning, but just before the Discovery is hurtled to the future (or goes into hiding), she is shown as having glimmers of higher intelligence, in Season 2 or thereafter.

Wouldn't that ruin her as a character?

How so? We're told in Calypso that she's had 1000 years to self-evolve. Doesn't that imply that she was not AGI or sentient in our current time? B4 didn't ruin Data's character, at least for me.

It would be nice to see a different Zora, one that isn't lonely, less sophisticated and when we go back and watch Calypso again, find the evolved one.

Just one way they could connect Calypso to Discovery S2, if they wanted to.

It would just be the voice actress. I got the feeling that Zora, the character, developed and grew after being left alone for so long, she wouldn't call herself anything. I'm really not interested in seeing pre-sentient Zora, it seems like a waste of such of a great character. Just like B4. Oh no, Data died but don't worry about having an emotional impact on the audience, he has a backup twin brother who we'll never hear from again. It's like if Spock died and Nimoy showed up as Spock's secret twin Tpock.

Haven't seen this mentioned yet here, but Craft's "enemy" the V'draysh are actually a mispronounciation (syncope) of "Federation" (verified by Chabon himself on social media here: https://i.imgur.com/hMaCVqr.jpg ).

So apparently the Federation does indeed still exist during this time. I guess Craft is part of some human colony that has broken off from the Federation for whatever reason (or was never part of it to begin with).
