Star Trek Reboot series.

Charles Markov

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
For some time now I have been toying with the idea of making a rebooted original Star Trek series in the style of Battlestar Galactica. In that my idea takes visuals, characters and broad story elements from the original and uses them in a way that is both completely different but still pays homage and is filled with nods to the original. So not at all like the JJ movies or Discovery from what little I have seen. Mapping out the show I quickly decided to write out a basic backstory for my alternate Star Trek universe. But it quickly got out of hand and is now quite detailed.

I will post the history of my universe here and anything else I come up with, but when I eventually work on the series proper then I will make another thread just for the story.

2000-2100
Effectively a big blank this era will be left largely alone by the lore of the series to allow real world events to occur easily. The same mistake made by TOS will not be repeated where events, dates and people were mention from the near future at the time. Such as Khan ruling a quarter of the world by the 1990s. Or Voyager making the same mistake with the invention of a massive tech company that did not exist in the 90s (I forget the name now)

2100-2130.
A massive economic depression termed the economic winter grips the world at the beginning of the twenty second century. Many nations are destabilised and major wars break out. North Korea nukes the south while India and Pakistan have a nuclear war of their own. The middle east is destabilized completely and Israel, Egypt, Iran and Turkey scramble to take as much land as they can. Africa descends into chaos while China and the United States break into several squabbling regions. In China a new warlords era begins while the United States splits itself into several regions. New England, South, Texas, Midwest and West Coast in order to make the running of the nation somewhat easier. Each region elects their own president who is responsible for ruling the region but subservient to the President in Washington DC.
In Europe Russia suffers a second Revolution which sees Communist forces seize control from the government and recreate the USSR. The new state is much more liberal than its predecessor but launches a string of wars of conquest across its borders aimed at neighboring nations. By 2130 much of the former USSR and Warsaw Pact has been reunited. Germany and France both respond by creating their own alliances with neighboring countries. While Britain attempts to fix its own disastrous economic situation with a trade deal with the Commonwealth nations signed in 2123. However the emergence of the USSR sees this trade deal expanded to include a defense pact and later political integration of many Commonwealth countries into a single state. By the mid 2130s recovery is well along the way however and the world is slowly on the road to recovery. Although tensions in some regions are quite high.

2130-2155
Since the early part of the twenty second century humans had been experimenting with the science of Eugenics. In the more developed nations of the world the science was used to eradicate many genetic diseases. Such as most cancers, degenerative brain and bone disorders and other diseases like Alzheimers. However in nations like India and China where laws were lax an entire group of humans was born with superior intelligence, strength, stamina and resistance to diseases. Known as Augments these people had reached maturity in the thirties and had begun to integrate themselves into society. Becoming lawyers, businessmen, politicians and military commanders.
One such Augment would enter the politics of India in 2133 and achieve the position of President in a special election in 2142. This man was Khan Noonien Singh and he would be the first Augment to achieve political control over a country. Elected on a rhetoric stating that he was the best suited man to lead by virtue of his superior intelligence and that under his rule India would become the world power. He claimed a new era of Augment rule over humanity was at hand and that ineffective democracy, which he claimed responsible for the economic winter, would be eradicated.
Quickly after election Khan transformed India into the princely state of India. Launching a series of invasions against neighboring nations and supporting Augment led takeovers of many other nations in the world. His rapidly rising power was eventually met with the creation of the Quadruple alliance pitting the Commonwealth, USSR, French and German leagues into a single military bloc to oppose the spread of Khans power. Other smaller powers such as Turkey, Israel, Japan and the United States quickly sided with the Alliance to protect themselves from a surprise takeover.
However war would break out in 2151 with Iran launching a strike against Turkey which was sanctioned by Khan. Egypt quickly announced its support for Iran and launched its own invasion of Israel and other nearby countries. Within days the third world war had broken out. For the first years of the war. From 2151 -2152 the war was conventional in nature and mostly confined to the middle east and Africa however following Japans entry into the war and Alliance success in Africa Khan ordered a massive nuclear launch against Soviet, European and American targets. Many of the missiles were shot down. However the ones that did get through caused widespread devastation. Similarly a retaliatory strike by the alliance led to hundreds of millions of deaths.
The Khanate, as the nations under his sway came to be known, swept across the world following the nuclear attacks. Managing to take much of Asia, Africa, Europe, south America and even make major advances into Australia and north America before a massive Franco-German-Soviet-Commonwealth counter attack devastated Khans armies and began to make rapid advances, retaking much of their former territory by 2154. Early in the year invasions of China and India, the heartland of the Khanate were possible. Further nuclear strikes by the Khanate proved impotent. In mid 2155 the allies entered New Dehli and Beijing and achieved final victory over the Khanate. Killing its leader (though in reality he escaped to the stars) and destroying its military. A harsh peace treaty was placed on the Khanate and its member states were reformed into democratic governments responsible for massive indemnities and war debt.

2155-2168
The peace treaty ending the third world war did not last long. Many nations of the former Khanate experienced revolutions in 2156-59 and in 2158 declared the Eastern Coalition of Nations. Or ECON to protect their interests. Remaining nuclear devices, planned for disposal by the allies, were seized and reactivated and a new cold war soon developed as the two sides engaged in a new arms race. Initial fighting lasting from 2156-58 during the revolutions was ended by a ceasefire agreement signed just after the formation of the ECON. A ceasefire that would last for the next quarter century.
Lacking the economy, population and industrial base of their foes the nations of the ECON, many of which were petty warlord states formed in the final days of the third world war, relied on extremely brutal means to ensure they remained competitive. In the post atomic horror (2153-81) which affected parts of India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal and Bangladesh law and order almost completely broke down. With the nations involved fielding armies of drug fueled troops as their impoverished economy and limited budgets would not allow them to adequately pay their troops. While the loyalty of troops addicted to narcotics only they supplied was difficult to call into question.

2168
With the world on the brink of another deadly world war the ceasefire held by scarcely a thread. Constant raids and border incursions were pushed back by the Soviets while what remained of Japan and south Korea faced nearly daily flights of ECON fighters into their airspace ensured that global tensions remained very high. Approximately two billion lay dead, hundreds of millions more suffered from radiation burns and still yet more untold millions suffered under horrible poverty, famine, drought, disease and squalid living conditions were the norm rather than the rule. Religion collapsed as many blamed their god/gods for the travesty which had befell their world.
This powderkeg was nearly set alight by the flight of Zephram Cochrane aboard his ship the Phoenix. In a flight lasting a little over seven hours he made a journey between the earth and moon at a speed of thirty percent that of light. Proving the truth behind his theorems and hypothetical Spatial Distortion drive technology. A day later contact was made between Cochrane and the Vulcans. A race of aliens from a planet some thirty light years distant. A week after that the same Vulcans appeared before the world in Paris to announce that they had observed the Earth for some years and had seen the destruction of the third world war. They announced that they were prepared to deliver aid to humanity if they wished it.
The response was an absolute yes. Much of the planet lay an irradiated waste, with millions affected by the war in need of supplies. The world even met the single Vulcan demand that earth deal with Vulcan via a unified body. Forming the United Nations of Earth late in 2168. The Vulcan ship left with the promise of returning in six months to a year with the first wave of relief supplies. A group of Vulcans were left behind to work out the initial phase of recovery operations and a number of Humans, including Cochrane, went back to the Vulcan homeworld aboard their starship.

2168-2181
True to their word the Vulcans returned in 2169 with a convoy of some dozen ships laden with huge amounts of relief supplies. Medicines, technology and scientists arrived to many nations of the world to begin the process of rebuilding the earth. Once the supplies were delivered on the ground control over their distribution was turned over to the UNE which ensured that the goods were delivered to lands that needed it the most. Despite the objections of many countries the UNE did a very good job initially of delivering supplies to where it was needed rather than to nations that held the most power in the organization.
Rapid progress was made in the early years of the UNE. With seventy percent of the radiated lands reclaimed, cities begun to be rebuilt across the world, famines averted in Asia and Africa, and disease outbreaks contained. However some parts of the world. Namely those affected worst by the post atomic horror were slow to receive aid. Due mostly to the unstable and constant warfare in these regions. Regardless progress was made. And humanity looked like it was recovering.
Cochrane had not been idle during this time. Having traveled to Vulcan, and becoming the first human to set foot on an Alien world, he spoke at a number of Vulcan universities and as a crowning achievement delivered a stirring speech before the grand Assembly, the primary Vulcan government body, where he begged for Vulcan assistance and offered his hand in friendship to his hosts, saying Vulcan would find Humans kindred spirits to Vulcans. He also secured important contacts in the Vulcan scientific community which would benefit him later in his life.
Cochrane returned with the first Vulcan convoy and in 2170 launched the Bonaventure. A larger vessel than the Phoenix which became the first human designed vessel to achieve faster than light travel. Afterwards he secured funding from the UNE for the creation of the United Earth Space Probe Agency, or UESPA. An organization intended to scour the stars for planets suitable for human colonization and alien civilizations. At first hundreds of probes were sent out to explore the stars and report back to Earth. Mounting only basic warp one capable engines these probes were slow and would take years to reach distant stars, only to take years more to send a message back to Earth via radio transmission. Cochrane used the time to design a trio of warp two capable vessels with Vulcan assistance. Launched in 2175 these were Enterprise, Intrepid and Valiant. These ships would be sent out on the first manned missions to other star systems and report back the finding of many new worlds.
It was soon found that the Alpha and Proxima Centari systems contained habitable planets. As did many other near earth stars. All of them uninhabited by alien powers and rich in animal and plant life, as well as natural resources. In the course of their explorations Valiant would be lost when the ship fell into a wormhole and disappeared without a trace. But the worlds discovered by humans were more than enough for Cochrane to secure permission and funding by the UNE for the purposes of establishing a colony in the Centari system. A feat which surprised the Vulcans when it was completed in 2192.
Back on earth things were not going so well. After cooperating initially well the nations of the planet soon began to squabble over resources and old rivalries flared up once more. The ECON especially became quite vocal regarding the perceived lack of supplies they received. In their eyes the alliance prioritized shipments of supplies to themselves and their allies. Leaving the ECON perpetually weaker and less recovered than themselves and thus easier to be destroyed in another war. Things would come to a head when the ECON and a few other nations withdrew from the UNE in 2180 and vowed to deal with the Vulcans themselves. They were quickly told no by the Vulcans who wished for earth to become more unified.

2181.
Angered and desperate the ECON launched a massive strike against the alliance in 2181. However several orbiting Vulcan warships were able to destroy all of the nuclear missiles fired by the ECON before they caused any damage. They were shocked when a retaliatory strike was launched by many allied countries as their weapons were on cooldown. Obliterating much of the ECON in a single strike and killing one and a half billion in an instant. Leaving Asia largely depopulated and destroying most of its largest cities. Afterwards an invasion by the Alliance destroyed what was left of the ECON in a few bloody months. Vulcan immediately withdrew all its ships and personnel from Earth and left for Vulcan.

2186-2300
Vulcan ships returned to Earth in 2186, they had not come to deliver additional relief supplies. Rather upon achieving orbit the vessels spat out a large invasion force, fired their weapons and destroyed ground based weapons and forced every last government on earth to capitulate to them. It was then announced that Vulcan would take direct control of the planet until such a time as it was proven that Humanity was prepared to rule itself without constant threat of its fiery annihilation. The act met with surprisingly little resistance by many humans. Which had come to see the Vulcans as superior in many ways to Humans and come to distrust their own governments. Many had come since first contact to even embrace Vulcan philosophy and embrace logic as the key force guiding their lives.
The move to invade earth had been debated almost endlessly by the Assembly on Vulcan. Many claimed such an act would go against their own principles. But eventually the pro invasion faction won with the argument that they could not allow Humans to destroy themselves and their world in the fiery death that had nearly destroyed their own race in the past. And so the invasion had been approved and a force dispatched. But it was sent with the idea that Earth was to be made ready to govern itself and until then Vulcan officials would act as guardians.
Governments were allowed to continue. However their militaries were disbanded and all control granted to a Vulcan delegation located in near the ruins of san Francisco. Human governments were responsible for carrying out Vulcan policy, leading to some to label them as conspirators or puppets. Vulcan also allowed the UESPA to continue and Cochrane to complete his colonization efforts in the Centari system. Even allowing the creation of additional colonies in the century following their occupation. This was a deliberate move on Vulcans part to preserve Earth`s ability to construct star ships. Something the world would need when it achieved independence.

Overall the Vulcan occupation lasting from 2186 until 2300 was in many ways positive. Over a century of peace without armies, warmongers, and arms races did much to cool human attitudes regarding warfare. While the existence of Aliens had caused most racism to evaporate practically overnight. Similarly the Vulcans eliminated poverty, famine, disease and began the slow process of eliminating the class divide. A move already largely accomplished in the USSR in the days before the third world war. In fact in many ways Vulcan policies resembled Communism. Redistribution of wealth, pooling of collective resources for the benefit of all. In short during the Vulcan occupation humanity learned to work together like never before and saw what could be achieved when that happened.

2275-2300
After almost a century of Vulcan rule Earth was allowed to form a unified planetary body, the Assembly to assist Vulcan officials in governing the planet. The first step towards independence. The nucleus of a planetary military was also created with the establishment of the Sol systems defense force. An organization taxed with the policing of the Sol system and near Sol colonies with a fleet of small gunships and attack craft in cooperation with naval elements assigned to the system by Vulcan. Although small this force learned its trade from constant joint operations with their Vulcan overseers and much of the traditions and customs of former naval forces were resurrected by the SDF. With vessels in the fleet named after famous ships from the past. Namely Soviet and Commonwealth designs, though some American, French and Japanese names did appear.
By this point Earth was clearly on the path to recovery. Its population had boomed from five and a half billion in 2175 to nearly nine billion in 2275. With almost six million people living offworld in the rapidly expanding network of colonies which surrounded Sol. And Human attitudes had almost completely changed. With many Humans now exhibiting a feeling of hope and confidence about the future. No longer was mankind confined to just one world. Along in the universe. Humans were eager to see what awaited them in the stars. And the UESPA launched a slew of new probes outwards. Many did not return, but those that did brought back still more reports of habitable or at the least terraformable worlds. With the universe before them Humans were now choking at the bit to be allowed to go out and explore. Putting their past rivalries, hatreds and prejudices behind them.

2275-2300
With its newfound freedom Earth began an aggressive new plan of colonization and public works. Building almost a dozen colonies in the span from 2275-2300. Bringing the total number of human extrasolar colonies up to fifty three in thirty five systems. On Earth new transport systems were built, new orbital and ground based infrastructure was developed and it was announced in 2282 that the effects of global warming would be counteracted and reversed completely by 2350. With many long extinct species being brought back to life and reintroduced into their ecosystems thanks to the power of cloning. Human scientists would be greatly aided in this by a large team of Denobulan scientists. These experts, the first of their species introduced to humanity and only the second alien race Earth had ever had direct contact with where instrumental in the cloning of a number of species.
Human spaceflight also evolved considerably in this period. With the warp three barrier being broken in 2292 by a UESPA explorer the Endeavor. Further missions of exploration were launched and Human designed ships began to make repeated stops in Vulcan ports with the intent of trading. Human ships in the era lacked the range and speed to reach any other Alien ports at this time, which restricted the amount Humanity knew about the outside galaxy to what the Vulcans were willing to tell them. And they did not share much.
Indeed this would be the era where some humans began to express the opinion that Vulcan was holding humanity back. That Vulcan was afraid of humanity, afraid of what they might do and what they could become. While completely the opposite of the truth, at the time, these accusations nonetheless convinced many in the lower classes of human society of some grand conspiracy that humanity was being held back from its grand destiny to expand across the galaxy by the Vulcans. Eventually something similar would happen with Vulcan making repeated attempts to stop the E class project of the UESPA and later limit human interaction with other races, but this was still decades in the future. In the meantime Earth made steady progress under the Assembly and talk began to circulate on Vulcan that perhaps Earth was ready for independence.

2300-2350.
In 2294 Vulcan officials announced that Earth was in the final stages of achieving independence. In preparation for this Vulcan began to withdraw its personnel from the planet and replace them with Human counterparts. Similarly control over Earth military and other deep space assets was turned completely over to human overseers. On the governmental level Human politicians began to organize a proper government structure. What emerged was a federal structure incorporating the former nations of Earth as administrative divisions with large amounts of internal liberties and autonomy from the central government in Paris. Though each of these states would be ultimately beneath the Congress, or highest governmental body on Earth. Plans for the integration of colonies into the planets political structure were also laid out, though for the moment control over Earth colonies would remain in the hands of appointed governors.
Independence was formally granted to the United Earth, UE, on the eighteenth of March 2300. Among the states first acts was the establishment of the United Earth Stellar Navy, United Earth Colonial Command, integration of the previously largely independent United Earth Space Probe Agency (whos name predated the UE by over a hundred years) into the structure of the new states military and scientific branches. And a slew of other acts. The new nation possessed no currency, no social classes, equal opportunity for education and advancement regardless of race, language, sex or any of the other restrictions past generations had faced.
The newly formed UESN was given and increased budget to better patrol and defend Earths territory. Approval for the construction of a new series of systems defense ships and Earths first cruisers the Alexander Graham Bell class were approved. These small ships, capable of warp three for short periods were laughable when compared to contemporary Vulcan designs capable of warp four and traveling up to a dozen light years without refuelling compared to the Bells paltry eight. But they did represent a major increase in the force deployable by the new UE.
By the 2330s Orion pirates had begun to raid Human settlements, prompting the UESN to receive increased funding for a series of new ships. Among them the nations first heavy cruisers, the big Churchill class large cruisers. Initial reports of other alien species were also made during this time, but humanity still knew almost nothing of the galaxy beyond earth. Human exploration extending only some fifty lightyears from Sol outwards. Some also began to express concern that Vulcan was deliberately holding Humans back. Refusing to share drive technology, stopping or at least delaying human attempts to surpass the warp four barrier through diplomatic means. And attempting to control the UE economy through the control of materials such as Vulcanium. A metal necessary to the construction of warp drives but available only from Vulcan sources.
Regardless Humanity continued to expand ever outwards, against the objections of some Vulcans which advocated Earth put a temporary halt to expansion and focus on consolidating holdings already under its command. Human science also began to make advances. Such as the invention of effective subspace transmitter/transceivers in 2346. And the mounting of such a system aboard the UES Marconi in 2353. This was among the first of humanities achievements which Vulcan scientist had never matched, while they did possess subspace radio they had never managed to make is small enough to mount aboard a ship. Albeit a massive quarter million ton monster whos internal volume was devoted almost entirely to the radio array.
UESN and UESPA ships had been steadily improving in their abilities since independence. Achieving steadily higher maximum speeds, longer ranges, better sensors and superior armament with each passing decade. By 2340 it was generally agreed that Earth weapons were roughly on parr with what the Vulcans had. If Earth designed weapons were larger and required more energy for a given output. And this was before the E class project.

Throughout the 2330s Henry Archer, a prominent researcher at the university of Columbia had been developing his theory on special dilation field streamlining. Essentially he claimed that by making a warp bubble more streamlined a ship could overcome warp drag far easier and achieve higher speeds more efficiently and for longer durations than with the conventional brute force approach where a ship used the most powerful warp field via the most powerful engine to force its way past warp drag. In 2337 he successfully flew the SS Nautilus at warp three. After this succes the UESPA hired him to design their next long range explorer. The E class.
From 2340 onwards that what Archer did. Using a team of scientist and a series of small test bed vessels to develop the best hull form. When completed the E series of ships would be capable of warp five for short periods and could cruise at warp four comfortably for long periods, and at warp three point five she could travel a distance of some thirty light years without the need for refuelling. A feat far above that of other neighboring powers and achieved on a hull far smaller than that of contemporary warp four Vulcan cruisers. With this ship Earth would be finally capable of exploring vast stretches of the cosmos quickly and easily.
Some on Vulcan demanded the project be shut down, other wanted the technology from Earth for themselves. And still others feared that with this ship the Humans would be capable of beating the Vulcans in a war. At the time the fastest Vulcan ships could achieve warp four point five for short periods, and could go perhaps twenty light years before needing to refuel. However the level headed were quick to point out that the E class was an explorer and due to a major argument with the UESN would not carry significant armament. Indeed the ship would be armed for only self defense with limited offensive capability. However they did see a need to monitor the Earth ship and learn as much as they could about its design while also stopping it from exploring to far out. (at the time reports of the Romulans were just coming through) and get Earth and by extension Vulcan into any trouble.

Star Trek Enterprise
2352-2360

The first E series vessel, Enterprise, would be launched in 2352 and sent out on a mission to explore, initially Vulcan space. For this reason she carrier a Vulcan officer intended to act as a guide. Enterprise would spend almost a year traveling to many Vulcan worlds. Contributing much to Humanities understanding of their neighbor and ally. She would then after refuelling head for Andorian space. Becoming the first Human ship to contact the race of blue skinned humanoids. A friendly relationship was quickly established. Tellarites proved harder to impress and remained hostile until the end of the Romulan Earth war.
After minor refits Enterprise was dispatched to the frontier to explore the fringe of unknown space. She would become the first Human ship to travel to the worlds of the Orion and would make contact with Nausican and Tzenteth vessels on more than one occasion. Alarmingly the ship also would become the first to receive reports of the advancing Rihannsu. An empire of cruel and savage bird like beings hungry for territory and resources. The crew of the Enterprise manages to make contact with the race, in that one of their ships fires on the Enterprise. This is in 2355 and shortly afterwards the ship heads back for Earth to warn of an impending invasion.

Earth has barely enough time to send some additional systems defense ships to border systems before the attack comes. The enemy sweeps through UE territory. Virtually annihilating the UESN int he first year of the war and forcing the UESPA to integrate itself into the UESN where its E and F class vessels stand as virtually the only line of defense Earth has against the sweeping hoards of enemy ships. The UESN develops a series of basic warships to fight the now dubbed Romulans until more advanced ships can be built. With these vessels and UESPA craft the Romulans are halted at the battles of Vela gap and Hells gate. In 2358-60 Earth launches a counterstrike and reclaims much of its lost territory. Using new advanced classes to win the day. The Romulans surrender before an invasion of their space can begin.
Earth possesses the most advanced ships in the galaxy at the end of the war and shares some of its technology with the Andorians and Tellarites. Both of whom also faced an invasion by the Romulans. Vulcan played no part in the war, aside from delivering large amounts of desperately needed supplies to the Earth, Andorian and Tellarite forces. Some consider the Vulcans to have broken their alliance with Earth. However with the defeat of the Romulans far from certain, and the UE economy in ruins this is not the time to blame anyone. Reconstruction becomes necessary. A reconstruction Vulcan plays a heavy role in.

2360-2370
Following the end of the Romulan war Earth began to reconstruct, with Vulcan supplied materials, aid and resources. A hefty focus was given to rebuilding both the UESN and UESPA. The former having suffered huge losses in the war and although victorious had a fleet comprised mostly of small emergency classes unsuited for continued service. While the latter had totally and completely lost its prewar ships in the fighting with the Romulans. Each agency turned to building new ships, the UESN to fight a future conflict with the Romulans and the UESPA to blaze new space lanes and make contact with new races. Hopefully not as hostile as the Romulans.
As many of the border worlds had been destroyed by the Romulans via nuclear bombardment the UE initiated huge reconstruction efforts. Turning massive amounts of effort, technology and materials to the reconstruction. Andor was in a similar position. Many of their frontier systems had suffered catastrophic damage. Though fortunately the majority of their longer more developed system, closer to their core, had been spared from destruction. Tellar had not been so lucky. Lying directly in the path of the initial Romulan advances into the Andorian and UE territories. Nearly forty percent of its systems had suffered some form of attack. And almost thirty world, large well developed and populated systems had been blasted into smoking ruins.
Vulcan aided in the recovery efforts. Agreeing to supply needed materials and aid at no charge, in exchange for data on the war. Ship designs, reactor development, warp field improvements and anything else that had been learned by either of its allies. These advancements had been inaccessible to Vulcan during the war, leading to the Vulcan navy being postwar the largest fleet in the known galaxy, but technologically inferior to its neighbors. The deals they made with Andor, Tellar and perhaps most importantly the UE were intended to begin the move to change that problem.

2371
The blossoming trade between the major powers of the time. Earth, Vulcan, Andor and Tellar had made for major growth for the economies of all parties. The influx of foreign trade, technology and tradegoods had led to new markets being opened up, new connections and more importantly a better connected galaxy. The military alliance between the UE and Andor, vital to the successful end of the war, had also been expanded post war to include Tellar and to a limited extent Vulcan. None of the participating governments had any real desire to see the end of this new era of cooperation.
Perhaps more importantly the post war elation at victory and feeling of friendly cooperation had not faded in the decade since the end of the war. In 2270 a meeting had been held between all four major powers regarding the formation of a military and trade pact. Initially considered as a quadruple alliance between the powers in the event of a future war with the Romulans the negotiations turned after the musings of some members of the Human delegation about the formation of a much closer government. All four delegations immediately began to discuss the possibilities of forming a government over the real purpose of the conference. In a few short hours a basic document was drafted with distinct roles, regulations regarding trade and mutual defense.
Each of the delegates took a copy of the charter home with them and showed it to their respective governments. Initially little interest was shown Andor approached the UE about the feasibility of such a proposal. The Andorian government had spent months working out the workings of such a government, how it would function, expand and accept new members, how members wishing to leave would do so, how it would enforce a joint diplomatic policy and how it would defend itself in the event of a war. They presented these findings to the UE, whose people soon found out about the proposal.
The public response on Earth was almost total support behind the formation of a Federation with their neighbors. Within a few months almost three billion signatures had been collected behind the petition to seek the creation of such a federation with their allies. Such a government they believed would allow expansion, security and increased in trade such as had never been seen before. The UE approached Vulcan, Andor and Tellar with the purposes of forming a Federation as outlined by the delegates of the 2370 treaty and later Andorians. Surprisingly all three sides agreed. In each of the three other governments support was strong for such action. And the populace generally supported the formation of such a government.

Thus fairly simply, as far as such things go, the United Federation of Planets was formed on the 23rd of November 2372 old Earth date, OED. This new body at the time of its inception featured no unified defensive body, and acted more as a loose military and close political alliance. Each of the thirteen original member states retaining their own laws, government, economy and military forces. However a basic mutual defense pact and articles explaining how all member militaries would coordinate with eachother was included. And the declaration of the rights of sentients and Federation high court were established. The declaration of the rights of sentients gave a series of rights and liberties all members must grant their citizens, while the high court was established to deal with any legal issues members would have with one another.
Acting as the ruling body of the new United Federation of Planets would be the Federation council. A political body centered on Earth in the city of Paris where general Federation policy, diplomacy, colonization, defense and legal action would be decided upon. Each member government that signed the charter after its inception would send a single council member. Each of the founding signatories, all thirteen, would be allowed three councilors. Control over the council would be in the form of the Federation President. Lacking much in the way of proper political power this figure would instead act as a leader among equals. Opening council sessions, introducing speakers and motions and counting votes though not voting themselves. The position was given on a rotating basis with each Federation member having a councilor assigned to the role of president.
A term as councilor was for a five year period. While a presidential term was for a single year and could not be held more than once, especially congruently unless there existed special circumstances. Such as a war or other major crisis or the councilor had performed his duties in an exceptional way. There was no provision given for how councilors were to be assigned to the council itself by the member governments. But the position had to be granted to those who possessed the capability and integrity to carry out the duties of their post. Councillors were not to use their positon for political or monetary gain. Nor to advance their careers further upon returning to their normal lives.
A Federation Science Council was also created for the purposes of coordinating research, disseminating of new discoveries and sharing of knowledge. Each major scientific institution of the Federation, regardless of its planet or origin or field of expertise was to send a member to the council which was under the direct supervision of the Federation President. Alongside the court, colonization committee, military coordination council and other groups the President acted as overseer and was responsible for sharing important news from each body with the Council as a whole.

With this framework as a guide the first Federation Council was formed just weeks after the signing of the Federation Charter and the first sessions of its many sub-Councils, Committees and other bodies were held for the first time on the 19th of December 2372 OED, Johnathan Archer, Captain retired UESPA, Admiral of the red retired UESN, Chancellor of the United Earth 2365-2370, was sworn in as the first Federation President the next day after the only presidential vote in the bodies history which saw him win 8-2-3 against T`rell of Vulcan and Skras Vluieharkien of Andor.

Well that took longer than expected but the next part of my Star Trek reboot thingy is done. A lot of thought went into how the Federation works. At least initially, this will change over time and the government will take on a more and more controlling role as time goes on and its voice overpowers local governments. And the military will eventually be reformed and developed into a proper Federation overseen organization. But for now this is what I have. Also thirteen original members was I felt a nice parallel to the first states in the US and calls back to the Federations origins as a USA in space.
The members of the Federation at the time of its founding are the United Earth, Vulcan Assembly, Andorian Empire, Tellarite Union, Denobulan planetary Republic, Bolian Assembly, Deltan Commonwealth, Rigellian Republic, Government of Betelgeuse, Orwillian Commonwealth and the three Vernian governments. The Vernian League, Republic of Asimnov and Keplian Assembly.
Most of these government are invented by me and I envision the majority of them existing as Vulcan or Andorian protectorates. Similar to what the Vulcans tried to do with Earth. They are generally insignificant and small compared to their larger allies. But hold vital territory or resources and because neither Vulcan or Andor outright annexes alien populations they have instead built up these governments as allies. I can go into it more if there is an interest but that's my update.

A word of advice, and you can take this with as many grains of salt as you like: Just start posting the story now.

If you're going to reboot Trek, then the most interesting thing about the reboot will be how you recraft the familiar narrative, not a history lesson about the timeline that led to it. If you want, you can tell other stories based in that history later, but this timeline - like any timeline, outline or character profile - is mainly important for the author. You want to tell a new story. Great. Start telling the story.

Agreed, however I have this big history written and figured I might as well post it. Especially as once I start writing the story there may be a few questions. Also I still in the phase where I am planning everything out right now so it will be awhile before I have much else to post about this.

2272-2300
The early years of the Federation saw the new state iron out many of the issues that had been left open by the Federation charter. Such as policies for joint diplomacy, mutual defense, legal proceedings, trade regulation. And many other important issues for any government. Issues made all the more difficult to agree upon and implement considering the huge diversity of the Federation. Even at its smallest extent.
But decisions were made and implemented. Diplomacy, defense and law being the major issues solved by the early Federation. It was agreed that the formation of a single Federation diplomatic corps was to be formed with each member race sending representatives to this new organization to be trained to represent the still fledgling Federation. Each delegation sent out would need to be comprised of multiple species to ensure agreements were not forged which benefitted a single federation member over the others, and also to show the diverse nature of the Federation with its multiple different species.
Defense also was tackled. Although the Federation charter did provide for mutual defense in the event a single member was attacked all would come to its aid. However there was some question over how mutual defense would work. With the UE arguing that whichever power invoked mutual defense was to be placed in charge of the operation and any allied ships present. Vulcan meanwhile maintained that any joint operation federation members should maintain control of their forces rather than handing them over to the besieged member. Potentially giving them the means to begin an offensive war, which went against the principles of the Federation. While Andor believed a single unified military command structure needed to be created and merged with the diplomatic corps to provide a single Federation wide entity to provide for the common defense and be funded by all members.
Vulcan won out over Andor and the UE and in a series of documents the function of the Federation mutual defense pact was agreed to. In the event a member state was attacked by outside forces (Civil wars and insurrections were not covered and were considered internal affairs) all Federation members were to send forces to provide aid in the defense. And. While accepting orders from the nation requesting aid each ship and task force was to be under its own native control.
Finally law would prove almost as big a challenge as defense. Here the question was how best to ensure that the Federation courts would be able to fulfil their jobs without rendering local courts redundant or stepping into their authority. The debate about how best to accomplish this would go on and on with few solid plans being developed. Eventually though in 2278 article 228 B would be accepted to become an official law of the Federation. It stated that the Federation court was to provide legal decisions in cases involving more than one member state. Such as border disputes, trade violations, inter member trade in illicit goods, and other issues involving citizens, companies and disputes from more than one members. In addition all disputes between Federation member states were to be handled by the court in conjunction with the diplomatic corps.

By the dawn of the twenty fourth century the Federation was entering an era of greatness. Excelling in technology, trade, colonization, and exploration the new government expanded rapidly. Accepting its fourteenth member, the Mithraides Union, in 2292 and many more after that. Also making contact with dozens of new species in the period and establishing generally positive relationships with them all. Notable exceptions being the Klingons which would be discovered in 2311 by the UES Tesla with violent results.
Earth especially in this period did well for itself. Recolonization of the colonies lost in the Romulan war occurred quickly and was largely complete by 2281 while new colonies would quickly be established in the period. At the same time the population and economy of the UE were skyrocketing. With the UE achieving a population of some twenty five billion in 2290, half the population of the Vulcan Assembly. Then the largest Federation state.
UE ships were also pushing the boundaries of known space. Possessing generally better more efficient reactors and higher speeds than their Vulcan or Andorian counterparts Starfleet ships ranged far and wide in search of new colony sites, species and strange stellar wonders. Far more than any other member the UE was expanding. By 2300 it was entering an area of space dubbed the Archanis sector that would soon bring it into conflict with the rising Klingon, Gorn, Tzentethi and Tholians.
Vulcan and Andor to expanded during the period. Though not in as spectacular a fashion as the UE. Indeed on more than one occasion Vulcan ambassadors urged Humanity to restrain itself. Lest they expand into an area already claimed and settled by a power even stronger than they. A repeat of the Romulan war seemed likely if that were to happen. A more cautious and steady approach was instead encouraged. With little heed paid by Humanity, which wished to expand its territory at seemingly all costs.

Realised the dates in the last update are off by a hundred years. I am to new to the forum to edit my posts. But as soon as this changes that will be at the top of my priorities. Also my next update. What will probably finish the time line portion will likely be out before to long. I think then I will work on some technology write-ups. Showing how tech works in this version of Trek. Its abilities and limitations. As well as a basic idea of how it works that will come in useful for scenes involving Scotty in my series.

2400-2440
Following the formation of the Federation and its formative years the dawn of the twenty fifth century saw the rapid expansion of both the area governed by Federation members, as well as the number of actual Federation members from a respectable eighteen members in 2400 to almost thirty by 2440 and the dawn of the four years war. The damage repaired from the Romulan war Earth expanded especially rapidly in this period. Colonizing dozens of new systems officially with large government sponsored colonies. While still hundreds of additional colonies and outposts were founded far beyond the UE`s borders on every planetoid, moon and rock that could be found.
Earths rapid expansion and large fleet would alarm Both Andor and Vulcan, who saw the expansion of the UE as reckless and a possible danger. However their fears, as in the decades before the dawn of the new century, were largely ignored. The Earth Starfleet was at the time the undisputed largest navy in the Federation. With numerous classes of heavy and light cruisers, destroyers and frigates. And even a few battleships. Earth policy makers confidently thought that their fleet would be sufficient to hold off any adversary.
First contact with the Klingons did little, initially at least, to change things. Although hostile and claiming worlds also claimed by the United Earth the Klingons possessed not only inferior warships. But also less of them than the Starfleet. In early engagements with D1, 2 and 3 cruisers Starfleet ships. Even older classes such as the Moscva, Gagarin and Hyperion cruisers had any real trouble. Even managing to fend off far larger formations while only taking limited damage themselves.
Unknown to Starfleet however the Klingons learned quickly and through a mixture of trail and error, research and developments. And even outright theft in some instances. Klingon ships caught up to their Earth counterparts. Integration of the systems recently conquered by the empire into the economy also aided the empire in bolstering its forces. All leading up to a confrontation with the Federation.

Things are going well for the Federation in this period. With a strong economy and general military superiority over any potential adversary. However the Klingons don't like the UE`s territory grabs into a region it considered its own and is planning a war. This will be the first test of the Federation and will prove if the government will be capable of weathering the hardships and strain of a major military action.

2440-44

Following years of peaceful expansion the Federation was thrown into a full scale conflict, the first since its inception by the Klingon invasion of the UE during the so called four years war. A war in which the Klingons had expected to fight against an isolated and unpolular UE alone and achieve a quick victory.

The causes for this war are complicated, as any conflict is. But its roots come down to the dispute over the resource and habitable planet rich Archanis sector. Which the Klingons had been busily expanding into for thirty years before the arrival of the first Starfleet scout ships in the 2390s. Tensions had risen quickly as UE and Klingon colonies were established in territories each considered their own. But neither side wished open war.

The UE was weary of a conflict for several reasons. Memories of the Romulan war and its devastating cost were still fresh in the late twenty fourth century. While the reckless expansion of the human frontier had alarmed many in the Federation. And initial reports of skirmishes with the Klingons had been met with something approaching glee by the other members.

The Klingons to had reasons to avoid an immediate conflict with Earth. They knew little of Humanity and the Federation. Suffered from a technological inferiority and were in the midst of pacifying a large area of space and several species already.

Because of these issues both sides contented themselves with the occasional border skirmish and in the Klingons case across the frontier raids to test new ship designs against those of Starfleet and gather intel and prisoners.

Slowly the Klingons would shorten the gap between their ships and Earths. While also learning as much as they could about their foe. Major forces were also built up in advance of the opening phase of the invasion. This was completely unknown by the UE at the time.

These forces were hurled across the border on the twenty second of June 2440 with a massive Klingon fleet consisting of at least three hundred ships storming the scant Starfleet border forces in the area.

Initial Klingon advances reached deep into the UE colonial sphere. And, as threatened, no Federation member came to their defence. Citing the series of colonies established by the UE in the region over the past half century as provocation for the Klingons. However the Federation paid close attention to developments in the war.

What they saw was alarming. The UE was being curbstomped by the Klingons. Massive defeats were suffered at every turn and a number of planned Starfleet counter attacks were crushed before they got much farther than the planning stage. Much of the Archanis sector was in Klingon hands while over two dozen well developed colonies were under Klingon occupation.

Finally after almost two years the Klingons were nearing the UE core worlds. And the gateway system of Axanar. And the Klingon juggernaught showed no sign of stopping its relenteless advance, although a number of peace treaties had been proposed. And rejected by the UE upper chamber.

With Axanar seemingly in the sights of the Klingons the Federation jumped into action. It and surrounding systems were controlled by the Upsol `Danthi. A humanoid species which had secured Federation membership in 2423. An envoy was sent to the empire demanding that the system be avoided. However this was ignored and general Kolth, the commander of the Klingon forward assault wing, replied in a stinging letter deriding the Federations abilities to defend itself.

A massive armada was assembled in the system. With Vulcan, Andorian and Starfleet formations joining together for the first time. Under the ultimate command of Starfleet admiral Garth of Izar this force would meet the empire in one of the largest battles in history.

Lasting six days the fighting was fierce and brutal. But resulted in a stunning defeat for the empire. Its first. And the entry of the entire Federation into the war against the Klingons.

Now outnumbered and massively outclassed by the waves of Vulcan, Andorians. And new and advanced Starfleet ships the Klingons were slowly pushed back. Fighting a two year long fighting retreat across the captured UE territories. Fighting ceased as the combined fleet reached the old frontier. The Klingons were to tired to continue fighting and the Federation was opposed to offensive war by its own charter.

Although no formal peace treaty was ever signed between the UE/Federation and the Klingon empire the battle of new Seattle is typically seen as the end of the four years war. Occurring on the twenty third of June 2444. Four years and a day after the first Klingon attack in the same system.

No the thread is not dead (though you are forgiven for thinking so) just been busy lately.
Anyway getting into the period the series will be set and the wars aftermath will play a big role in the backstory of many characters and general feelings in the Federation at the time. The Enterprise in particular will be rather torn over the war and how it was carried out. Humans feel abandoned by their supposed allies. While the Vulcans and Andorians think themselves justified in their approach to the war. The Klingons are stinging from the defeat and gunning for the Federation now. Working hard to prepare for another war. While Earth tries to match them.

Anyway I think that covers the history of the series. From here on in I will be working on the actual series itself. If I have an idea or a question this will be the place I post it. So stay tuned.

PS
I thought about editing this. I truly did. And then when I was finished I just posted it without thinking. When I get editing all this will be edited and grammar checked so it will be easier to read. Hopefully.

Well I worked on laying out the basic ark of the series. What I want to happen each season and how that ties into the others. I also want to use some original series episodes and characters. But updated and made to fit into the narrative I want to tell. So what's your favorite episode of tos?

So I have been working on the series. I have a list of ToS episodes I want to include in some form and at some point in the series. Five seasons of which are mapped out very roughly, and I do stress roughly. Several character arcs and developments are planned, as well as sideplots and at least one subplot which I plan to develop over the series.

The seasons themselves will be around twenty installments long. With each episode hopefully being written in advance and released in chapters over one week. A weeklong gap will follow each episode. One season will consists of roughly twenty installments and seasons will be released back to back. So no mid season breaks or anything. At least that is the plan. During the weeklong gap between episodes I plan to release some sort of filler material. Character bios, histories of the races of the galaxy, classes of ships, wars and that sort of thing.

Also the series will not revolve around just Kirk, Spock and McCoy. I want to flesh out other characters over the course of the series. Make them less two dimensional and more interesting. Anyway that is my plan at least. Lets see how it goes.

Yeah, I started a reboot fanfic series once too. I planned for twenty epsodes too. Know how many I actually finished? Six. Know how long it took between episodes? Weeks or months. I haven't even finished writing episode seven yet.

Don't overpromise. You haven't posted story one yet. Get that done, let people read it and see how they react. Twenty episodes is a lot of work that you're setting yourself up for if you don't have an audience for it.

Its not a matter of overpromising. This is a very rough outline for the series and I totally understand that what I plan may not pan out. However I think it is better to have clearly stated goals for something than to just sit and see what you can do.

Well slowly making progress on my Star trek project. I have A couple of episodes sketched out in a very rough format, as well as a list of episodes I want to include from the original series.
I am hopefully going to start writing episodes in October and that way will have a backlog of episodes when I release the first episode sometime in the new year.

Solar System Defense Force.
2276-2300
Created in 2276 the SSDF was intended to act more as a law enforcement agency than the chief military arm of the Sol system Protectorate. As Earth under the Vulcan occupation was then known. As such its ships were small by most any standard. Being designed with limited beam and missile armaments sufficient for only short duration combat sorties meant to delay an attacker in time For Vulcan vessels to come to their aide. At the time the designations PC and AC were used to denote SSDF vessels.

PC stood for Patrol craft. Denoting a small intrasystem vehicle that while capable of warp speed possessed neither the range or speed necessary to enable extrasolar flight. AC denoted an Attack Craft, a larger vessel that featured a similar armament to a PC. But with the engines and fuel reserves necessary to allow missions to the star systems nearest Earth without to much difficulty.

United Earth Space Probe Agency
2176-2372
The UESPA used a very simple classification system as well. For most of its history, which stretched back all the way to 2176 the United Earth Space Probe Agency used the same system. In its fleet were explorers and surveyors. Explorers being the long ranged vessels intended for missions of several years unsupported. While surveyors were designed for much shorter missions with the goal of exploring a single system for potential resources and colonization sites. Probes used a separate system and as farther and more distant systems were reached the usefulness of unmanned probes diminished significantly.

United Earth Stellar Navy
2300-2372
The UESN developed a completely new classification system from its predecessor the SSDF. While maintaining the PC designation for vessels designed with intrasystem operations in mind the AC designation was dropped in favor of new CH and CL designations. CH designating a heavy cruiser meant for long range missions lasting several months and taking the ship perhaps a few dozen light years from her base. These ships carried very large missile armaments and an impressive battery of lasers. Both point defense and offensive weapons.
Light cruisers were smaller and faster than a CH. However they were shorter ranged thanks to their smaller displacement and carried less missiles. Choosing to focus the majority of their weaponry on lasers of both point defense and offensive varieties. Occasionally in the history of the UESN some talk was given to the construction of heavier ships than the CH classification. However the exact terminology to be used for such a ship was heavily debated. With BB, battleship, BC for Battlecruiser, FM for fleet monitor and DD for destroyer all being floated at various times. However no such ship was ever built for service with the UESN, though several were designed.

Combined United Earth Starfleet.
2372-present
Following the end of the Romulan-Earth was the UESN began to introduce a new classification for its ships while the UESPA continued with its prewar classification and ordered new ships. Such as the Daedalus class explorers and Apollo class surveyors. However with the creation of Starfleet after the formation of the Federation these old systems were discarded in favor of a new system. Starfleet would reform its fleet of ex UESN and UESPA vessels to include four classifications for its vessels. BC, CR, FF and SC.

Battlecruisers, BC, were the largest and most heavily armed ships in the Starfleet. These ships were intended to operate as part of a fleet of such ships against enemy formations of similar strength. Such as the Romulan battleships of the CC-3 and CC-6 classes. However as the Romulan threat diminished and the vessels built during the war were retired Starfleet spent little attention to this designation. Building only sporadic classes of battlecruiser until the four years war. By the outbreak of the war only seven such ships existed in the fleet.

Cruisers were the backbone of the fleet. Presenting the heaviest guns in the fleet meant for independent operations. Cruisers were meant to explore the frontier and make contact with new races. In times of war the vessels would patrol the frontier and spearhead mobile formations which would raid behind enemy lines. The cruiser would be a common type in service with the Starfleet at the time of the four years war. With well over forty such ships in four classes forming the navy.

Frigates were efficient vessels at warp. Neither as fast nor heavily armed as cruisers Frigates spent most of their armament on lasers and later Phasers. With little thought given to missiles or photon torpedoes. The type acted as a border patrol ship and would regularly provide a screening force for BC type vessels in the fleets scant battle groups. At the time of the four years war there were almost sixty such ships in the fleet split between six classes.

Finally scouts were the smallest ships in the fleet. Armed often with only a single laser or phaser these ships used their tremendous speed to blaze new trails for cruisers. Finding evidence of new races and stellar phenomenon that the cruisers could then examine in detail. In a battlegroup the scouts were meant to probe enemy formations for weakpoints and discover the composition of enemy fleets.

Post Four years war.
During the four years war Starfleet developed numerous new types of ship as the war showed that the nonspecialised nature of much of the fleet, where one vessel was expected to perform a number of different missions, was flawed. Resulting in heavy losses being suffered by much of the fleet in the initial Klingon attacks. Importantly following the end of the war Starfleet realized the need for a distinction between ships meant for the battlefleet and those meant for other assignments.

Battlecruiser, BC.
Revamped following the war Starfleet would build two classes of such ships during the war. Although the Majestic class of the late war would see only two ships being constructed. The vessels traded impulse maneuverability for heavy armor and weapons loadouts. At warp the ships were quite fast, though often an additional nacelle was used to split the strain of moving such a massive ship. Heavy phasers and massive torpedo magazines allowed the ships to dish out as much punishment as they could take.

Heavy Cruiser, CA
The heaviest of the ships to spring from the prewar cruiser designation these ships were fast and powerful. Lacking the staying and hitting power of a battlecruiser in combat these ships would rely on superior maneuverability and speed to evade their foes while using their phasers and torpedoes to hit hard. Away from battles the ships performed the same roles as cruisers always had. Exploration, diplomacy and rendering aide to colonies in need.

Light Cruiser, CL
Typically a slower and cheaper alternative to the heavy cruiser with more emphasis placed on beam armament than torpedoes. The type is often used within Federation borders as the ships often lack the shield strength to remain in combat for any long period of time. Often times older cruisers have been reclassified under the light cruiser designation.

Frigate, FF
Still the standard border and law enforcement vessel the frigate has evolved into a small fast ship with decent range. Often sharing a similar hull with Destroyers the ships differ in mounting primarily phasers as armament. Allowing them to remain in a fight longer, though not pack as big a punch as a destroyer. The vessels also often act as mail ships and to check up on the more isolated colonies.

Destroyers, DD
Designed to act as a compliment to the battlecruiser the destroyer is a light combatant meant to act as the primary scout and screening unit of a battlegroup. Scouting ahead of friendly formations to launch attacks against enemy battleships with their photon torpedo banks. While also defending friendly capital ships against attacks from similar ships in enemy fleets. Few destroyers exist in the fleet currently serve active roles.

Scouts, SC
The smallest ship in the new classification the Scout has changed little from its form prewar. The ship is still small and fast, carries limited armament and has little in the way of utility in any form of formation. Recent classes of scout have however begun to feature multi use pylons that can feature a number of different modules. Such as weapons, sensors, cargo and passenger modules. Allowing the ships tom fulfil a multitude of missions that other ships cannot perform.

Well it has been bobbing around my head for awhile what sort of ship classification Starfleet uses. And I decided to write it down and post it so that those reading the series (Which I will begin writing in October for a release sometime in the new year) will know what each ship type does.
