"Marooned on a deadly planet, the crew must work together with their captive Gwyn to stay alive...except the planet isn't the only thing in pursuit." - Memory Alpha

After this, the show goes on hiatus until January 6, 2022.

I watched Discovery and I said that episode was just "Fine". I just watched Prodigy and this episode was awesome. When they activated the Protostar, my first thought was "This is their Omega 13 Moment" (Galaxy Quest) and it was nice to go into the Break with the crew fully formed especially Gwyn. This was a great episode was character work too, especially for Dal and Gwyn and I'm excited to see where it goes. Prodigy was sold as a kids show, but I would look at it more as Star Trek's Clone Wars or Rebels. This was a great two part episode.

So does this “protowarp” use Dilithium?
It did have a very “ Ludacris speed” vibe to it.

It was pretty good. Did feel a bit rushed. The reason why Gywn joins the crew was rather predictable but I suppose there was little they could have done.

The "Proto-Core" is StarFleet's first attempt at a AQS (Artificial Quantum Singularity) reactor.

You need to prime the AQS for a bit, before you can start using the energy the AQS gives off.

It's basically a Black-Hole Reactor that you have to start up by feeding matter into it for a bit.

Then it should be able to run indefinitely as long as you continuously feed a slow but steady diet of matter and harvest any of the energy that is radiated out.

That's why they have enough energy to use TransWarp.

TransWarp drive speeds need ALOT of energy to sustain those speeds.

Remember, the AQS that we saw in TNG was powering a giant D'Deridex.

And they seem to be able to get a rather "Bulky" AQS to power a tiny ship like the ProtoStar.

It's basically the USS Defiant principle of shoving a over powered Reactor into a tiny StarShip frame.

Not a bad little episode. Characters and dialogue are still overly simplistic for my taste, but for kids...., and just like with modern live action (and lower decks) is paced far faster than the story really needs (but again for kids)....

I thought this was a great episode. Probably the best one of the entire season thus far. It's actually a good place to take a break, ending not on a cliffhanger, but telling a complete character and plot arc for the show to date.

This episode was basically from the POV of Gwyn, and it worked in spades. Essentially there was this tension within Gwyn's character between loyalty to her father and her sense of right and wrong/affection for the other characters. She started the episode as a betrayer of the remainder of the kids, had a complete and total breakdown of her idolization of her dad, and made a reverse heel turn into a full comrade-in-arms with the escapees. Dal gets a bit of a character arc as well, but it's secondary to Gwyn's lead here - but important that he goes over the course of the episode from the character who trusts her least to the character willing to risk everything to save her life. Simultaneous to the completion of these character arcs, the kids discover the true nature of the ship, which is a nice metaphor for "leveling up" as a crew.

The episode gets dinged in my book for one reason alone - the idea of a ship powered by a "protostar" is dumb, even in the history of Treknobabble. Protostars are not small, they are actually much larger than regular stars due to being lower density. I simply cannot completely look past this, even though I enjoyed the episode considerably.

Yeah, for there to be a protostar powering the ship, the ship would be need to be gargantuan. According to one source I read on the web, there is a limit on how small a star can get because any smaller and there won't be nuclear fusion. The number I saw was something like 8.7% of the sun's diameter, which is something like 864,000 miles. So, we would be looking at a ship carrying a star with a diameter of 75,168 miles.

What’s the Smallest Possible Size of a Star (and why isn’t Jupiter one)? (futurism.com)

Finally, UFP getting into REAL advancement (Disco writers... are you paying attention?).

Containment of a protostar eh?
Its not a black hole.
A protostar is effectively a small/baby star which (similar to a black hole) gives off quite a lot of power (and lasts about 500 000 years).

Its similar to AQS, in the sense that it uses a containment field to hold a baby star in place and use its energy to provide power for TransWarp (and who knows what else).

I wonder why is the ProtoCore gobbling up so much power when its not in use... and more importantly, CAN it be used to replenish the ship's power supply stores?

A possible combination of shrinking and subspace perhaps?
Its possible that UFP/Starfleet managed to CREATE a baby star in a controlled fashion... but during its creation, they progressively shrunk it to something the size of a Warp core so it can be used on a starship.
