Do or die! This episode is a big turning point for the show. We've got ourselves a new Trek series with yet another ship and crew. That's not a bad thing but with so much Trek out there, this show has to distinguish itself from the pack. In many ways, it's "so far, so good" with a motley crew of rather animated non-starfleet youngsters, an abandoned ship and an evil mastermind after them. But will its unique twist on Trek endure or will the show fall back into what's too familiar. That remains to be seen and tonight's episode will test that.

"The crew has their first away mission on an undiscovered planet that manifests their deepest desires, only to realize the planet has desires of its own." - ViacomCBS Press Express

Dreamcatcher brings on shades of Chakotay, who despite being descended from indigenous Central American tribes, for some reason kept a dreamcatcher around, which is more of a First Nations of Canada thing. But, hey, my mom liked them too. To each their own, I guess.

I would imagine that after a few centuries, there may have been a bit of mixing & matching of beliefs from the different indigenous tribes around the world.

Dreamcatchers are the adapted symbol of the Pan-Indian Movement today, and there's nothing wrong with Chakotay having one, or, rather, giving one away as a gift (just like my most assuredly non-native mother owned several). It just was one of the worst signs of Jamake Highwater, universal Native American stereotyping.

I just hope it's not a reference to Chakotay.

Much better than last week. It was a great adventure type show, with a nice cliffhanger to next week. It looks like Gwyn does have a heart afterall, and Dal was not nearly annoying as last weeks episode.

This one gets an 8 from me.

Strange for the Hirogen system to have a “pitcher plant” like planet.
They will probably have to work together to get out of it

M-class in the Hirogen system? Must be the Hirogen homeworld... did they give it up after the vines took over?
The tricorder looks odd, but the phaser looks like the next step after the dolphin.
The Argo looked reasonable compared to that buggy XD
Gwyn is oddly familiar with the ship's controls...

About Gwyn's ability to understand the controls - it is a familiar trope throughout Trek that characters will have a basic understanding of a ship's controls, even if it is the first time they have encountered that particular control interface. There is an universal sameness to controls in the Trek universe - an individual can know the basics and be able to adapt to and control any ship.

Tellarite - I might have been given insight into how he ended up in the DQ.
Dal - Well, last week, he nearly killed his crew and this week he saved them. So, there's that.
Rock girl - her innocence is charming and her love for cute fuzzies is adorable.
Medusan - I am not sure if I learned more about him, they always seemed to enjoy solving puzzles and finding answers to questions
Murf - my favorite character so far; liked how Gwyn protected them from harm
Janeway - will this hologram become like the Doctor on Voyager, in that she grows in her character and evolves beyond her programming?

I have come to enjoy the animated shows more than the live action shows. It seems the better writing teams are on these shows.

...and take over full control and reset the hologram so quickly?

It seems like her father trained Gwyn well on everything.

Also, how many hostile Psychic Beasts that want to eat you are lurking out in the galaxy?

If it wasn't the Psychic Pitcher Plant in space that wanted to eat Voyager, it's the Psychic Planet filled with vines that want to eat you on this random M-Class Planet.

Perhaps the ancient Hirogen brought over the vines as the ultimate hunting prey, but they lost out and became a nomadic species instead. Maybe the Hirogen will be the answer to how they get out.

We know the Diviner is on his way, but I think he might just end up stuck on the planet a bit after they escape.

Great episode.
But, now I have to wait for next week to see what happens.
I kinda wish the episodes were longer though.
This weekly 'drip' is a bit slow.
Can't they just release the whole season at once? Or wait... could be that they are still working on finishing Season 1. :D
Takes a while to animate the characters, facial expressions, lighting, etc. then render it all out.

Don't get me wrong, I like the show thus far (much better writing compared to Disco and other live action in general) , and its interesting how they inserted a mini arc into this as well (maybe similar to how the Enterprise did mini arcs in S4... but with one larger season long main arc in the mix too).

As for Gwyn's ability to control the Protostar... Federation ships have a very friendly user interface (far more user friendly compared to other species - this is probably because its comprised of over 150 alien species and wanted to create a user interface that's easily understood and operated by everyone - or most people)... and also the Diviner taught her about ship operations... and given that he is familiar with the Federation, it stands to reason this would include Federation systems... but I was a bit skeptical of her ability to gain full command access and rewrite Janeway (I think the holo programmers forgot about tampering... although, it stands to reason the cadets need the ability to gain full access eventually once they learn everything holo-Janeway can teach them).

As for the system... its just called a 'Hirogen system'... doesn't necessarily imply its the Hirogen homewold.
It is possible this system is part of Hirogen space... but UFP doesn't have an official name for it.

Yeah, the Diviner's goal seems to have been commandeering the Protostar. He also seems to be confined to a chamber for some mysterious reason (one of the show's 271 mysteries). My assumption is that Gwyn was taught all these skills explicitly to take command of the Protostar once they dug it out.

Enjoyable episode. Great show. Great to watch alone or with kids. Teaches them the basics of Star Trek.
I miss the Hirogens. Would love to see them return to Star Trek.

Really nice take on the planet-of-the-week episode. I did like all the discovery elements, the kids learning from Janeway about their equipment, interacting with the environment.

I do wish the show aimed for a younger audience. The teenage conflict between Dal and Gwyn leave me cold.

This one was fun. A planet that manifests your desires is a well-worn sci-fi trope, but the execution was enjoyable.

I am intrigued by the reference to a Tellarite sleeper ship and to the mention of the Hirogen system. I hope those both pay off.
