Star Trek peeves

They also tapped into Geordi's VISOR in an early TNG episode, so the bridge crew got to literally see the world through Geordi's eyes. I can't remember what episode it was at this late date, only that Georgi saw Data with a glow around him because he was an android. That was a neat bit.

If I recall correctly, that was "Heart of Glory", the Klingon episode from the first season.

@Johnny Quest 037: "That's a perfectly logical thought, but I think it's just one of those things that they have to do to have a show. If everyone knows exactly what's going on at all times, it becomes really tough to sustain a problem or create any suspense."
I respect what you're saying, but a body cam wouldn't necessarily be an absolute. Neither would surveillance from orbit. The cam signal would be blocked whenever the communicator signal was blocked (which is a lot.) Weather could move in to block the ship's orbital view, or they could go inside a structure (even underground). The camera tech would still be as fallible as a malfunctioning phaser or a jammed plasma injector. I don't think the show would have to sacrifice drama for this feature, if anything it could increase tension. They can see a situation, but not be able to intervene for some reason. The camera signal viewed on the bridge could give the Captain the wrong impression of an away mission, lots of potential there. "Wait a minute, we can't always trust our body cam footage, Number One." Point of view shots have been used to great effect in many shows and movies. I am not expecting omniscience from the show, just practicality.

But just because some of us accept 3rd party access to our front & rear-facing phone cams in order play a game of Squirrelly Nut Crush, doesn't mean Starfleet crew would so easily surrender their own right to privacy. They wear the combadge at all times, but they do not monitor each other (even when it would be a quick solution to a major problem, such as stealing a shuttle). Knowing it could be remotely activated at any time is entirely a different proposition. Let alone leaving it on! The cure is worse than the disease.

It might relate to the same reason they don't lock their food pantries, weapons lockers or com panels.

(Are you REALLY comfortable knowing your geolocation is ALWAYS a matter of record? Why not make it illegal to forget your phone, seems well within the creeping latitude of acceptability)?
