Hi, I was wondering if Star Trek Excelsior had been an actual thing, regardless of whether it was actually feasible logistically or with a budget in mind, what ideas fans would have hoped for?

A feature film? A TV series? Some direct-to-video movies?
Would you have brought in other TOS characters (Rand, Chekov, Uhura) as regulars or guest stars?
Keeping the TWOK style uniform or something different as a replacement or alternative?
Other stuff please!

Cheers!

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I don't think George Takei is a strong enough actor to have carried a series.

That being said, I think the TOS movie era would have been excellent territory for more exploration. I love the both the starship designs and the uniforms from that era as well.

I wouldn't mind an excelsior series (led by John Cho) but I would love for it to be so damn ambiguous as to whether or not it could be a Prime reality series or set in the Kelvinverse. I mean you could be very vague with certain events.

I do think he could have carried a series. Even if it did not go the full seven season, I could see it going five. Since its the backdrop of the 24th century meeting the world of TOS. It would be a prequel of sorts, but not going so far back before TOS like ENT did.

I just question if he could have carried a theatrical movie by himself, without the involvement of the Big 3, or TNG cast. Since the best window to do a theatrical Sulu-led movie would have been when GEN happened. GEN could have been about Sulu and his daughter. Instead, it was Kirk and Picard. Any film afterwards would have to be direct-to-video instead.

But does Valtane get to live (Trek 6) or not (Flashback)? ;)

Depends on the involvement of Khan’s blood and the Temporal Cold War.

A series featuring Sulu would be a fun idea, but not with john Cho, cast a new actor to play Sulu. I very much doubt a general audience would remember who Cho is after the years since the last movie. A actor who could carry the show would be better.

I just can't imagine that the general public would be that interested in a show about Sulu. No offense intended to George Takei, but Sulu just wasn't that important to the show. I'm not sure he has that much of a following.

Exactly. I think what would have happened with a feature film, is mild success, which would be read incorrectly as Sulu can carry it himself, so then talks of a TV movie would occur. But he's so full of himself and still on an on about Shatner decades later like a petty child (As well as saying stupid things on other subjects), that it would take years to get off the ground. By then the budget would have been smaller since ST: TNG was taking the lead. Then years after any momentum was gone, a cheaply-made TV movie would have been cranked out, and failed and that would have been that. Probably would never have gotten that "Star Trek: Voyager" episode.

I guess during ST6 Tuvok must have been in the head farting.

Wow, Memory Beta says: "as of 2019 the Captain Sulu Adventures stand as the only official attempt at producing an ongoing original audio drama series based upon the franchise"
Might have to check it out...

He was great in World Enough and Time. I think Sulu's hokey dialogue rarely brings out his best.

I agree on both counts. "Flashback" was proof of the former for me but also proof of the latter. Takei couldn't have carried the series on his own but an Enterprise-B show could have worked, filling in the era between GEN and "Encounter at Farpoint." The ship designs/models, uniforms, props, and sets were all there. Paramount could have saved a ton on production and there were a ton of stories to tell: first contact with the Cardassians and Tzenkethi, the Tomed Incident, and a lot more. A completely new crew could be created if the show was set even just five years after GEN.
