star trek discovery uniforms, costumes, and clothing

I like the Disco unis. They're a little goofy but they're fine. I prefer the away team version which doesn't have the bling, off-centre zip or crooked collarm.

Loving the bright colours on the Enterprise versions.

We see extras wearing the grey/blue variant at the end of season one at Starfleet Command during the speech (happy that variant never saw more action). As for the overall design it isn't bad, just poorly utilized. If the backdrops and sets had been more colorful and more brightly lit the current uniform design would be perfectly fine and if anything would help do subdue shots. However with the dull grey sets that are less lit and shot with greater contrast make the current designs blend horridly into the scene. Dark set > bright costumes or light set > dark costumes. Otherwise you get either too bright/pastel shots that are gross, or you get crushed shots that have no color or depth that are equally gross. Either way the Show-runner/production design should have been working harder to mate costuming, set, and cinematography as to not have these issues in the first place. Hopefully this will be less of an issue in season 2 and onwards. Otherwise kudos to Gersha, she is an A+ costume designer and deserves to be utilized better.

agreed.

i also really appreciate this toned down jumpsuit variant (if it weren't for the asymmetrical collar and zipper):

Yeah, the visual design of this show has been dull and pretty uninspired - "make everything bigger!" - and the nearly monochrome palette has been part of it.

Still, I'd expect that if they went with the TOS colors they'd probably block them as more limited inserts on the navy blue uniforms rather than those broad slashes of bright color such as Pike's wearing here.

I hope DISCO switches over to the traditional TOS colors eventually. Looking at the show's excellent take on the TOS uniforms, those colors pop against the drab ship colors, whereas the current navy ones blend into them.
This has been my argument all along. I've never had a problem with either the uniforms or the set design on their own (even if the latter is a bit generic), but they just work well together. There's no contrast. Even the little bit of color on the Enterprise jumpsuits made a huge difference, and I'd even argue that changing the pinstripes/braiding from the Olympic medal colors [Would 'metal' be more accurate here?] to traditional dept. colors would be a huge improvement.

As I've noted before, I think the best example of the costume and set designs working harmoniously is Voyager, especially during red alert.

Agreed! Although for me, the best example of harmonious design Trek aesthetic is TOS—from costuming to VFX to cinematography to set design. It created one of the most unique looking shows ever produced. When flipping through the channels, there's no mistaking the original Star Trek even if you've never seen an entire episode.

I know this is a visual production so costume design is an important consideration, but I at least found DSC aesthetic believable as an extrapolation of Enterprise and Kelvin designs.

That it aligns with ENT does not really matter though. It was over a century ago, so it really should have very little influence. That it doesn't align with TOS is a problem.

I'm not disagreeing on that point. I'm simply noting a design flow that I (being a uniform nerd) appreciate, especially going from ENT to the USS Kelvin to DSC. I even can appreciate the TMP uniforms more now.

Also, as noted in other threads, the Constitution class apparently started with their own uniform style (not unusual in a large organization) and was eventually adopted by the Fleet.

Thus far, I have seen no problem with the uniform aesthetic.

ETA: Also, the Monster Maroons were technically a century removed from TNG but those uniforms influenced the TNG era ones.

They did? I really don't see that. TNG uniforms are a radical departure from the stuffy maroons. TNG uniforms have way more common with TMP uniforms.

They do but its the division colors that impacted their development (Gold for Engineering, Tealish tone for Science, plus Red for command from the Monster Maroon). It's more the color tradition that I'm noting. Again, the DSC flow to the TMP and TMP to TNG in terms of cut and style very well.

Yeah, certainly true.

I find it interesting that the Phase II uniforms had blue and tan that were more like The Cage than TOS:

Those are actually pretty much the colors of the early TOS episodes where they used cotton velour for the tunics. In fact they may be older uniforms.

Mount looks in those shots above like he's uncomfortable and doing everything he can to hold his gut in...he's got a visible belt-line in a couple. These outfits are not forgiving.
