Low blow 1:
This announcement comes 48 hours before the release of the Star Trek Discovery season 4 premiere.

Low blow 2:
ViacomCBS made part of the Discovery cast show up in London five days ago for Destination Star Trek, the official Star Trek convention in Europe, as part of the marketing push for Discovery season 4.
Today ViacomCBS announced that Discovery season 4 will not be released in Europe in 2021, but sometime in 2022.
(some Discovery actors were also at the FedCon in Germany three weeks ago and promoted season 4)

Low blow 3:
Not for every country where Star Trek Discovery was available on Netflix are there plans to launch Paramount+.
This means in these countries Star Trek Discovery is completely gone.

Global availability of Netflix:
FEasANsWYAUVxI-

Global availability of Paramount+:
FEasAjUXEAE-PGj

Unless ViacomCBS announces that Strange New Worlds will be released on Amazon Prime, which they most likely won't, Strange New Worlds will not be available for the foreseeable future in the gray countries.

Good luck launching Paramount+ in continental Europe through Sky.
Sky has an SVoD market share of 7% in Germany and 9% in Itlay.
Sky pulled out of Spain in 2020 and is not active in France.
In Germany, you need the Sky "Cinema Paket" for €37,50 per month to get Paramount+.

Picard and Lower Decks are still on Amazon Prime.
TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT are still going to be available on Netflix.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation about the Sky deal. P+ will still be available as a standalone app as per the original press release.

Paramount+ will also be available direct-to-consumer in UK, Ireland, Italy and GSA through the Paramount+ app for iOS and Android and across supported connected TV devices and OTT platforms.

This is how streaming services are supposed to be. Content creators (Disney, Warners, NBC/Universal, Paramount/CBS, etc) keep their creations on their own service instead of selling to competition.

And since they were supposedly getting a lot of money from Netflix for Discovery, it shows that they are confident that the series is strong enough that they would more than make up for it via more subscribers for their own ott product.

Super shitty to announce this days before the new season. They could have avoided this if they'd announced months ago it was moving to Paramount+, like they did with Prodigy.

Suggests something fell through at the eleventh hour.

Fair to say it's gone down like a bucket of cold gagh.

Completely agree, it has been poorly handled but I guess we don't know what happened behind closed doors and I guess someone somewhere did the math and decided they were happy enough to let people pirate the show who will subscribe for SNW in the future then license a single season to Netflix. I would love to know what happened in those negotiations.

Imagine getting really excited to watch DISCO this week and then seeing this, they should at least look into a season pass on iTunes and Amazon as a one off.

I would never get Paramount+ - Netflix and Disney Plus are sufficient. I've considered getting Amazon Prime.

How many of these bloody subscription services are people willing to fork out money for? I wouldn't know what else Paramount+ has on offer ... Blue Bloods? Transformers?

Production houses owning their own streaming services stinks of the Old Hollywood studio system from before Paramount (of all studios) was slapped with and lost an anti-trust lawsuit about the practice.

Unfortunately from my understanding that ruling has just expired.

It‘s save to say I won’t be seeing this or any Star Trek except Picard and Lower Decks (for now) for a loony time.
There is no universe where I will pay 40€ per month just to see one show!
Why would you pay that much? Paramount+ does not, or will not, cost that much per month.

Current offer in Finland, which has Paramount+, but still will not get Discovery is 6,99€/month. And the current discount is 7 days for free, first 3 months 50% off.
