Star Trek Board Games/Table Top Games

I don't remember seeing a topic about the best Star Trek board games out there now.

I've played Star Trek Five Year Mission at a board game cafe which was pretty underwhelming.

The top two Star Trek board games from what I've read are Star Trek: Fleet Captains and Star Trek: Ascendancy.

Supposedly, Fleet Captains plays out more like episodes from the series whereas Ascendancy plays out like a civilization type game where progress through an entire history of race after they discover warp.

What are your best experiences with Trek board games and which ones are your favorite?

I own a whole bunch of Star Trek board & card games...

Some of the ones I've enjoyed:
Star Trek Chrono-Trek - a time-travel card game! Players try to either alter or keep the timeline intact by adjusting events to change the outcome of key moments in Trek history. Link.

Star Trek Panic - a co-operative game where players protect the Enterprise from attacks coming from all directions. Very hectic and fast-paced! The first time we played, the Doomsday Machine ate us... :vulcan: Link.

Star Trek Fluxx - a card game where the rules change as the game goes on, never plays the same way twice! There are decks themed for the original series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, plus extra card packs with Enterprise characters. Link.

Star Trek III: Struggle for the Throne - This one is older and bit harder to find, and despite the name it doesn't have much to do with The Search For Spock... This a a game of Klingon power politics and intrigue, where players scheme, plot and stab their way into becoming the next Emperor. Link.

I have boxes full of Star Trek CCG cards. It was fun while it started, but it's a little depressing to think I spent thousands of dollars on bits of cardboard which are now just tucked away in a cupboard.

This is absolutely corect. I've played a lot of both and they're both really fun. I will say Ascendancy is much more 'polished' than Fleet Captains, which is quite a budget production in terms of card quality and model quality.

Both are good but I went with Fleet Captains for a few reasons.

It seem that Fleet Captains is much more thematic compared to Ascendancy so many things that happened in actual episodes can happen in Fleet Captains whereas Ascendancy is essentially a 4X Star Trek game which is also fun if you are looking for that. I'll eventually play and buy both.

I agree with the budget production comment.

Also, for Fleet Captains the Romulan expansion (my favorite race) is out of print so I found a decent deal on Ebay and bought it. I didn't want to buy Ascendancy first and later Fleet Captains only to have to pay hundreds of dollars for the out of print Romulan expansion.

I initially picked up Star Trek III: Three Solitaire Games in One by West End Games. This was well worth the money.
More recently I picked Star Trek Frontiers. This game is really amazing & has a solo mode.
Tonight, I ordered Star Trek Alliance Dominion War Part 1 which also has a solo mode. I'm very excited to try it out.

There are a few new Star Trek games coming out soon also...

Star Trek Lower Decks Buffer Time Card Game (Modiphius):

Explore strange new worlds, they said... but it’s hard to appreciate the wonders of the Galaxy when you’re stuck lubing the turbolifts. But hey, it’s not like Captain Freeman knows how long any of these assignments really take...

In this push-your-luck card game, 2-6 players work together to complete their assignments while also making time for some well-earned rest and relaxation. Can you squeeze enough fun into your duty rotation before the bridge crew figures out what’s going on?

Star Trek Into The Unknown Federation vs Dominion Core Set (WizKids):

Teleport to the bridge of the most legendary starships from Star Trek as you launch an epic adventure across the galaxy!

Star Trek: Into the Unknown features the most detailed Star Trek ship models in tabletop gaming, all designed to scale. Large ships like the U.S.S. Enterprise or the Jem'Hadar Battle Cruiser will tower over the smaller ships, and all come pre-painted to an incredible amount of detail.

Traverse headlong into the unknown where you'll negotiate and fight alongside iconic characters using your quick wit and tactical maneuvering to overcome complications and challenges. True to Star Trek, research and diplomatic actions and not just combat have lasting impacts on the game, causing missions to evolve in surprising ways.

Choose your officer, deploy your crew, explore the galaxy, navigate anomalies, position your ships to strike, or negotiate terms with the enemy. Players will instantly immerse themselves as the egalitarian Starfleet or as the oppressive Vorta and Jem'Hadar as they decide how to handle tense mission objectives and unexpected complications.

Embark on a journey to remember through an extensive campaign narrative. Your decisions matter, and they affect the outcomes of your unique story. With upcoming expansion featuring new missions and new ships to command, Star Trek: Into the Unknown is dedicated to delivering an expansive universe to your doorstep.

Star Trek Captain's Chair (WizKids)

In Star Trek: Captain's Chair, you will go head-to-head with an opponent, each stepping into the shoes of an iconic captain from across Star Trek's galaxy and history. Command ships, crew, and away teams while you manage resources and alliances!

Each of the six captains comes with a unique, asymmetric deck of cards themed to that captain's personality strategies, allies, and assets. Each deck creates different strategic directions based on which common cards are available and what strategy your opponent deploys. The captains to choose from are:

  • Jean-Luc Picard
  • Benjamin Sisko
  • Michael Burnham
  • Koloth, The Dahar Master
  • Sela
  • Thy'lek Shran
True to Star Trek, antagonism will not win every game. You will need to pursue diplomacy, exploration, and science, with different captains excelling at different paths. With hundreds of unique, deeply thematic cards, you'll want to explore the galaxy again and again! The chair is yours, Captain!

When I was thirteen or so, I loved Struggle for the Throne. It was sort of a Klingon-internecine-fighting version of Cosmic Encounter, and quite fun.
