Spock Prime Question

At the end of the film, it seemed as though Spock Prime remembered what was happening (I think it was getting promoted to Captain). But what I don't understand is, if this is an alternate universe, then wouldn't Spock Prime not remember this event as if it happened in his past? Or did something like this actually been stated in TOS?

Nimoy said in a recent interview, sorry cant find the link, that he suggested this line as a passing of the torch to the new crew. JJ liked it and kept it in the film.

So, no it wasnt a new memory.

It seemed to me that, at some point, Ambassador Spock was going to be seen researching the multiverse somehow, and realising that in most universes (and maybe every universe in which Nero was defeated?), Kirk was already captain of the Enterprise.

I'll bet it was kind of depressing to be in an alternate universe and realize that he'd probably have to get a new cell phone.
