Splinter infection...ouch!

I've gotten so many splinters over the years that it's something I usually don't even think about. But about three weeks ago I was picking up an empty pallet (skid) off the floor when I felt a slight stab on the underside of my index finger near the hand. I found a long very thin sliver had slid in almost at right angles to my finger. I gave it a little tug and it slid right out without any drama and it looked like nothing at all.

I then forgot about, as you tend to do, but a day or so later it started to swell a bit and look red and felt a bit stiff and tender. I thought perhaps a bit of the sliver stayed inside but I couldn't see anything there. I soaked in in hot water with salt periodically for awhile and eventually I was able o squeeze some stuff out of it. Eventually it healed and the swelling went away, or so I thought.

The underside of my finger, where the sliver had entered, healed completely but then the side of my finger began to swell a bit. It didn't hurt and I wasn't overly concerned yet, but I continued to soak it and eventually I was able to squeeze more bad stuff out. This went on for about a week and I thought it was healing only just slowly.

But today things were different. It looked okay when I went to bed last night and I didn't even think about for much of the morning. But around noon I happened to look under the bandage and I didn't like what I saw. It was swelling more and starting to turn dark. That's it, I'd waited long enough. If it had changed so much within a day, and for the worse, I wasn't of the mind to wait for however long to see my family doctor.

I went to the local hospital emergency--something I've only done once before in my life (for a bladder problem about 25 years ago). After checking in it took about 40-45 minutes to see the doctor. And when I did see her I was with her for only about ten minutes. She took one look and opined that my finger was indeed infected. The only real drama was when she gave me a local anesthetic shot that hurt like fucking hell...then nothing. She sliced it open and squeezed all the bad crap out. With tweezers she rummaged around a bit yet said she couldn't see anything there. She thought that I had indeed gotten all of the sliver out initially but that it likely must have been contaminated and that's what gave me the delayed infection. She cleaned it out, dressed it (yet no stitches) and gave me some extra dressings. Before sending me on my way she wrote me a prescription for antibiotics to help kill any further infection. She said I should be fine within a few days, and in the interim take the antibiotics, continue to soak the finger occasionally in hot water and salt and change the dressing. If it doesn't clear up in about five days then return to see her.

I was in and out of the hospital in about an hour. The prescription took about twenty minutes to fill and cost me a whopping $26.14 (CAN).

Two things observed. Public health care is nice. And seemingly harmless and small events can turn unexpectedly nasty. Also a good thing I didn't wait any longer before seeking treatment because even a small infection has been known to rather quickly into big trouble in any number of ways.

Other than playing Santa this has been my little excitement just before Christmas.

I'm glad to hear you took care of it and should be on your way to feeling better soon.

This happened to my husband a year or so ago. For 28 years the man did major renovations around our house with no accidents. Last year he was removing the old wallpaper in the bathroom and got a PAPERCUT from the wallpaper. Of course he didn't wash it or do anything logical to it, and continued to work. In a matter of days his thumb and then very quickly most of his hand looked like Chris Pine's in Star Trek. I am not kidding. He went to the doctor who did the same things yours did and then put him on 10 days of antibiotics. After the 10 days he went back and was put on another 10 days worth. The swelling went down, the pain went away but to this day he gets an occasional zinging pain in there. We figure he must have damaged a nerve ending or something.

Moral of the story: if you cut yourself, clean the wound. Doesn't matter if it is a little ity bitty thing. If bacteria gets in there, you're screwed.

^^ Well said. An infection can not only affect the local surrounding tissues, but it could get into the bloodstream and travel elsewhere throughout the body. Then you'll really feel it. People have actually died from untreated or tardily treated infections.

I'm not the panicky sort, but I draw the line at in indulging in stupidity.

I also know people who boast about never taking any medication including something for a headache. Hell, when I get I a headache I'll first try to address the cause: am I over tired, am I stressed, am I hungry? If it isn't any of those things and the headache doesn't eventually go away or even gets worse then the hell with it and pass me the Advil.

I can tend to be a very stubborn person and not take any medicine for pain such as headaches or runny nose, etc. But now I say to hell with it and pass me the Bendryl as well as the Advil PM!

Every time I see the title for this thread I see it as "Sphincter infection...ouch!" :wtf:

So it could have been worse I suppose.

Take it to the next level: "Splinter in Sphincter infection..." now that would be an "ouch" indeed! :D

One of my earliest memories is getting a massive (well, it seemed massive at the time) wooden splinter stuck in my finger when I was about 2 years old, while playing in the sandpit in the garden. Had to go to A&E to get that dug out with a pair of forceps as my mother couldn't manage to lift it out with a needle at home. No infection, mind you.

That is excellent advice for all those who jump to the advil bottle before thinking it out....all of those things you mentioned should be addressed before pumping pills into your body.

My daughter and husband get migraines for all of those reasons. Better to eat something every four hours, get enough sleep, etc and avoid the headache rather than treat it after the fact.

Please don't make me imagine how that could happen.

I have a splinter stuck in my thumb that's been there for about two months now. It all started when my wife bought a bed for my daughter at a thrift store. There were no side rails, so I bought a couple of 2X6's to make them. I was sanding one of them when a piece of the wood lifted slightly. It went right through the sand paper and into my thumb. It's a long piece of wood, so I was moving my hand rather fast at the time. I pulled out a piece of wood about 1/16" in diameter and about 1/4" long. It didn't heal right away, and after a day or so I realized there was probably more still in there. I went to the doctor who sliced it open and dug around for a while. He couldn't find anything. Now, the hole is completely healed over, but I can see where the remaining piece is. I can feel the bump and see where it is. However, it's not infected, so I haven't been very motivated to go get my thumb sliced open again.
