SNW questions

Okay, so I have been watching SNW recently and have been slowly getting through it. I am only starting season 3 so no spoilers past that please!!!

Anyways, I just had a few questions for other people who have watched it.
Have you seen the 'musical' one, if so what did you think of it?
Have you finished it and was it worth watching?
What are your overall thoughts on the series?
Do you think it's well written or poorly written?
Do you like Spock's relationship with Chapel?
Do you like how Kirk is portrayed?
Would you rate this as one of the better Star Trek series, or one of the worst ones?

Overall for me, I do enjoy the series I will not lie, I do like Pike in this series I think he is portrayed really well, I think the script is written well in some aspects, although in others it's not written well at all, I found the 'musical' episode very funny yet making the series look a bit silly and having some series topics just messed up with the characters singing.
I also don't know how I feel about Spock with nurse Chapel. I did like Spock with T'Pring, I felt she was very patient with him and she understood alot of the times that he didn't know how to control his emotions or how he was even feeling at times. I disliked that Chapel wanted their relationship to be a secret, just to break out in song to tell Spock she is happily going to leave him, than Spock apologising for nothing he did wrong he was just trying to support her and she just threw it in her face. I'm not a huge fan of Spock written this way at all to be honest, but maybe he will get better within this next series, I hope Chapel leaves for the next season too, I really don't want her and Spock to get together again.
Again I haven't seen season three, just wanted to ramble a bit before I start watching it.

I am really looking forward to hearing other peoples opinions on this series, I know people either like it or dislike it, it's very split but I am very intrested in peoples sides of how they look at things.

I’ve been a Star Trek fan since I was a kid, which probably makes a difference, but here are my answers.
Have you seen the 'musical' one, if so what did you think of it? I’ve seen it and enjoyed it. The plot is a bit ridiculous and the lyrics are a touch New Age, but the performances were terrific. The actresses who play La’an and Uhura are obviously stage-trained singers. The singing Klingons alone made it worth it.
Have you finished it and was it worth watching? Yes, I’ve seen all of it and yes, I thought it was worth watching.
What are your overall thoughts on the series? Overall, one of my favorites.
Do you think it's well written or poorly written? Some episodes are better written than others. It suffers from having only 10 episodes a season. They had to cram a lot of plot into a short period.
Do you like Spock's relationship with Chapel? I liked it in the beginning. I wasn’t overly happy with the break up and rebound relationships.
Do you like how Kirk is portrayed? I think the Kirk actor has been doing a good job. There might be a little too much Kirk at this point in the series.
Would you rate this as one of the better Star Trek series, or one of the worst ones? One of the more entertaining of the new Trek series. It’s my favorite of the bunch.

I have watched it
Have you seen the 'musical' one, if so what did you think of it?
Yes. it's excellent.
Have you finished it and was it worth watching?
I have watched all three of the seasons available. It is well worth watching Looking forward to seasons four and five.
What are your overall thoughts on the series?
Great show. Great addition to the franchise.
Do you think it's well written or poorly written?
Well written for the most part.
Do you like Spock's relationship with Chapel?
I do.
Do you like how Kirk is portrayed?
Yes I do.
Would you rate this as one of the better Star Trek series, or one of the worst ones?
Easily in the top three.

Have you seen the 'musical' one, if so what did you think of it?
I liked it.
Have you finished it and was it worth watching?
Finished that one episode? I did like the musical episode, so yes, I would.
What are your overall thoughts on the series?
Good casting, very good costuming and FX, but too prone to gimmicks and stunts, a cavalier attitude regarding canon, and has tonal whiplash. It works as a colorful, pleasant enough distraction to me, but I'm still not sucked into it. I look at it because it's got "Star Trek" in its title, but I'm still waiting, and hoping, to be hooked.
Do you think it's well written or poorly written?
More poorly written.
Do you like Spock's relationship with Chapel?
No.
Do you like how Kirk is portrayed?
No.
Would you rate this as one of the better Star Trek series, or one of the worst ones?
Hard to say right now. If I finish the series, I will feel better about judging it, but right now I put it in the lower middle, behind all the Roddenberry-Berman live-action Treks.

I shouldn't say SNW is more poorly written, because I don't think it's a bad series, however, I find it mostly tepid and uninspired. It's got the Trek trappings and goes through the motions, but rarely does it hit the sweet spot for me. I think my gripe is more with the creatives and their vision more than most of the individual stories.

It's hit the "sweet spot" more than not for me. Especially that TOS sweet spot.

1. Yes. The musical was tough for me the first time but liked it better the 2nd time. Good character development stuff and one outright hilarious bit.

2. Finished & worth it.

3. Best live Trek since DS9. Though S1 & S2 were considerably better than S3. A bit too glib at times for me. Some of the comedy whiffs sometimes. A some cannon liberties, most, but not all, did not bother me much.

4. Mostly well written. WIth a,few hiccups.

5. Spock/Chapel/T'Pring well done. Liked the Chapel/Spock dynamic.

6. Yes. I like Kirk. Though it took a bit.

7. Best new Trek and best live since DS9.

YMMV, of course:

Top: TNG, TOS, DS9, SNW
Tier 2: LD, PRO
Tier 3: VOY, ENT, PIC, DISCO
Tier 4: TAS

Movies:
Top: tWoK, tVH, tUC, FC, tSFS
Tier 2: INS, Beyond, ST
Tier 3: TMP, GEN
Tier 4: tFF, STID (worst)

Third Level: VOY, Lower Decks, DISCO
Fourth Level: PIC, SNW, Short Treks

Second Level: The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, Generations
Third Level: Beyond, The Final Frontier, Insurrection

Have you seen the 'musical' one, if so what did you think of it?
Yes. Love it. Top 5 SNW episode.

Have you finished it and was it worth watching?
I have watched all three seasons. It’s being watched because it has Star Trek in the title and its potential to be great, and not because of any strong feelings towards the show.

What are your overall thoughts on the series?
Its more pleasant to watch than the first couple of seasons of Discovery. But it’s also strayed from the worldbuilding that the first couple of seasons of Discovery and Short Treks did, aside from the Klingon War.

But that this show has very little to say about the real-world current day explains why the episodes only stand out when they are takes on genres. Like the musical, for example.
Do you think it's well written or poorly written?
Some aspects are well written. It works well as a character-driven show, instead of being a situation-driven show that many Treks before it was. And it does its best in being an ensemble show and developing everyone involved. Its quality is also consistent.

Other areas are lacking. The romance arcs are not on the level of the Buffy universe, despite the show clearly being influenced by Whedonism. And being limited to 10 episodes a season limits them, and leads to a bunch of plot points being crammed in, that are then dropped and not followed up on.
Do you like Spock's relationship with Chapel?
Yes. The T’Pring/Spock/Chapel dynamic worked well.
Do you like how Kirk is portrayed?
I do not have a problem with Kirk appearing in the series. His appearances being limited to alternate timelines worked for me. As did hanging out with his brother Sam.

Anything beyond that, such as TOS reunions before TOS has even happened, is overdoing it, imo.
Would you rate this as one of the better Star Trek series, or one of the worst ones?
It’s not better than the original 5 live action series. Its also not better than Lower Decks or Picard. It’s in the bottom half for me.

Have you seen the 'musical' one, if so what did you think of it?
One of my favorites of the series! I'm not normally a fan of musicals, but this one was fun. I even bought the soundtrack on vinyl!
Have you finished it and was it worth watching?
Yes on both. I've seen nearly every S1-S2 episode five or six times, and every S3 episode two or three times.
What are your overall thoughts on the series?
To keep it short: Usually very enjoyable and a lot of fun, but often has less to say than some of the older shows.
Do you think it's well written or poorly written?
Overall I think it's fairly well done, although the writers often seem to compensate for the short seasons by rushing things or making a lot happen off-screen.
Do you like Spock's relationship with Chapel?
I'm ambivalent on it. It was all right at first, but it doesn't seem like it resulted in character development for either of them.
Do you like how Kirk is portrayed?
Yes. I see a lot of similarities to TOS Kirk, and can fairly easily see him as a younger and less experienced version of the character. I don't want the pop culture version of Kirk!
Would you rate this as one of the better Star Trek series, or one of the worst ones?
Better, in terms of how much I enjoy it. Far above all the new shows, and better than Enterprise and Voyager as well. I saw others doing tier lists, so I'll do one too! Note: The tiers sometimes vary a bit depending on my latest rewatch, except for the first and last.
1. DS9, TOS
2. SNW, TNG
3. VOY, LDS, PRO
4. ENT, TAS
5. DSC, PIC

I couldn't agree with you more. I love all the points that you made, also, on Vinyl? So jealous where did you find it I would love to invest in it for sure.
I am only starting season three I thought the wedding episode was insane and I actually felt so bad for Spock.

Anyhow, I really like your view on the series because I'm the same.
What was your favourite part of the series so far and who is your favourite character?
Also, sorry so many questions, but what makes you like DS9 the best?
I have yet to watch it, I am quite newer to the star trek fandom so i'm slowly but surely getting through it all.

I think I just ordered the soundtrack through one of my regular record stores, it's been a while and I can't remember which one though. You can still pick up copies online pretty easily. I was just playing it fairly recently actually!

I probably like season one the best so far, but season two was also a lot of fun. I find it hard to pick a favorite character because I like nearly all of them, but Spock and La'an have consistently been my favorites. Which is interesting to me because I initially had reservations about both before watching the show! I wasn't sure how they would be able to do a new Spock without it feeling like a copy of Nimoy, but Peck's take on the character won me over. I also thought they were going to have La'an be "generic tough action character" at first, but I was very pleasantly surprised there too. She's far and away my wife's favorite character too, so that's fun!

On DS9, I think there's a lot of things that make it my favorite. It has a very strong main cast, and most of the characters react to things in a believable way as well. A lot of the characters grew immensely over the course of the series too, and Sisko is my favorite captain because of that! I also think it has the best cast of recurring characters in Trek as well. It's probably the Trek show that uses serialization the best, and they had enough episodes to pay off character development years down the road, so things felt a lot more earned. I'm not sure which shows you've seen so far, but I definitely recommend trying it out sometime. The early first season is a little weaker due to using TNG style stories, but it finds its footing a little later on and turns out some great episodes!

Answering in part only, as I am on a padd.

I am immensely fond of the series and this is mainly due to the capability of its cast and their adaptability at what's thrown at them.

Not all the material they have been given has been that good, but they pulled a lot of it off.

I like the Pelia character - I work in an industry with more than a few very old female colleagues with stories to tell.... and I now think they might be Lanthanites (have we found out yet if Lanthanites are an alien species or an offshoot of humanity?).

In series 3, I'm rather missing Bob April.

Robert April made an appearance in the season 3 opening episode. There is a very nice scene between him and Pike.
