SNL's season premiere

Anyone watch it last night?

Seems as terrible as ever. Michael Phelps did about as well as most sports figures who've hosted have done.

The only good parts were the opener with Palin and Hillary Clinton and the bizarre digital short (stock footage of original Battlestar Galactica!). Shatner's appearance was surprising and mildly amusing, I suppose. (It was not Trek related.)

The rest was painful...but that's what you get for not having anything better to do on a saturday night. ;)

Yeah, Tina Fey was just awesome as Palin. I didn't expect her to do the accent too, but she completely nailed it. It's a shame it's probably just a one time appearance, because this could have been as big and defining a character on the show as Will Ferrell's Bush.

In fact I was surprised they didn't have more political sketches last night. I know they had to cancel the Obama one, but I still would have expected more than just the two-- especially during such a big election season.

Hell, I'll even take a bad political sketch over most of the stuff they USUALLY do. lol

How could Tina Fey NOT play Sarah Palin, she was made for the role.

Palin is the smartest thing McCain has done, the press can't get enough of her and it's making Obama pay the price in taking such a safe (i.e. boring) candidate as Biden.

I'm sure since Obama's last minute cancellation they had to juggle a few things.

Yes, Fey and Poehler were great as the openers. "I can see Russia from my house!"

These days, I tend only to watch the opener, the monologue, the first commercial parody AFTER the monologue, and Weekend Update.

Last night the news looked weird. It was a much tighter shot on both Amy and Seth, and it was a little unnerving. Is Poehler pregnant?

And PLEASE fire Andy Sandberg. He's not a unique comic genius, he's just lousy.

And since we have about a zillion other political forums, can we keep this one politics-free?

Yeah it's too bad that if they win, she'd be the worst thing to happen to women's rights in history.

I. Is Poehler pregnant?

yes pregnant by GOB( Will Arnett)

Apparently the new guy who looks like Jonah Hill/Jim Belushi was cast because he made some youtube videos :wtf:

seriously hiring people off the internet? Hell just get that fat guy with glasses that sings into the webcam.

Mediocre like the past 10 years or so. The new guy was weak, the digital short was terrible. I don't know if I should count Phelps messing up his lines.

Next week with Franco might be okay. Maybe slip a Spider-man joke or is it too late?

We can only hope! :techman:

The premiere was a disappointment. Michael Phelps should stick to swimming and commercials. It was nice to see Tina Fey back on the show, but her Palin/Clinton sketch wasn't that funny (maybe there was too much buildup to season premiere). And to top it off, yet another wretched hip-hop act was on hand as "musical" guest.

See my new sig. ;)

I didn't get the memo that Obama had cancelled, so I recorded it. Fast-forwarded through most of it. In general the show has gotten almost as annoying-rather-than-funny as MadTV.

These days, I tend only to watch the opener, the monologue, the first commercial parody AFTER the monologue, and Weekend Update.
Sounds like a plan! :techman: I don't tend to stay up so late these days, but I may start recording it for those good political bits.

Probably on NBC.com, but I found it on DHD.

That was even funnier than I'd hoped. :rommie: "Ask this one about dinosaurs!"

But seriously. What's a FLURG? I don't even want to google that.

If you google you will see a lot of people are asking based on the SNL reference but no one seems to know for sure. It seems that most think the first letters are First Lady I'd, and then you are left to guess RJ or RG (RJE? RGE?) might stand for.

Tina Fey was great as Palin, that skit as a whole was great as it seemed to skewer both Palin and Clinton.

"I think we should get rid of the Bush Doctrine."
"I don't know what that is."

I don't like Tina Fey but she did a great Sarah Palin. That was the funniest thing Tina Fey has contributed to SNL in many years. With the exception of Shatner's out-of-nowhere cameo, the rest of the episode was atricious. They really should have had more political stuff. They have talent on the show but it's creatively dead. Maybe it's time to send Lorne Michaels out to pasture.

James Franco is next week but he won't have anything good to work with.
