Smoothies!

So I've decided I want to get in the habit of drinking some smoothies, because I love fruit but I don't get enough of it and I love the smoothie texture. And I have a small cup attachment on my blender that would be useful for this sort of thing.

Anyone here drink fruit smoothies? Have any great suggestions or recipes? Pretty much the only fruit I don't like is bananas.

Also, a question. Do you drink smoothies as a meal in themselves or do you drink them with a meal? I was thinking of drinking them for breakfast but I'm not sure if just taking in liquids will be filling enough.

What do you guys think?

^Oh man, I haven't been to an Orange Julius in ages! The malls around where I live now don't seem to have them, but it was a staple of my teenage years.

That also reminds me of Jamba Juice, which my family is obsessed with. However, I don't really like the majority of their drinks as they have a freshly mown lawn taste to them.

Love 'em..

My fav is to throw in blue, black and strawberries, a banana, cup of Lite and Fit yogurt and a spash or two of Simply Orange OJ... then blend to perfection..

Messy but really yummo!

Orange Juice
Plain or vanilla yogurt
Ice cubes

Blend well, pour into tall glass, enjoy!:techman:

p.s.- the ice cubes, when blended, will give you a milkshake-like consistency, which I prefer

Aha! Bought Son a smoothie maker for Christmas and we have been dabbling with recipes.
1st thing ~ frozen fruit ~ they have every thing and it does not go rotten when you get bored! Supermarkets should provide and it's a 'do when you need' thing, then bung it back in the freezer.
next... Juice ~ anything, be creative, but a high concentrate would be best.
A little bit of natural yoghurt, a little ice cream, a little vodka (maybe not in the breakfast ones!) and voila!

Do make sure to clean out smoothie maker after every attempt and get a 'brush on a stick' to prevent cuts on fingers.

Delicious ~ the smoothies, not the cuts on fingers!
Go for it Spot and let us know which recipe works for you

They make ideal between meals snacks for me - too light for a proper meal, too heavy to accompany a meal.

The last one I made which we all really enjoyed had strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, natural yoghurt, a splash of coconut water, and a hint of vanilla extract. Sweetened with a little bit of acacia honey. The fruit was frozen and gave it a thicker ice cold texture. K'Ehleyr knows what she's talking about as far as convenience goes.

I also recommend virgin strawberry coladas: ripe strawberries (or thick strawberry juice), fresh pineapple, coconut cream, crushed ice. The best!

I love strawberry smoothies. I think the only reason I bought a blender is so I can have smoothies. Or milkshakes.

I really like the strawberry smoothies at Smoothie King, but DAMN, are they expensive!

Is it necessary to have a yogurt base for the smoothie? I have some vanilla ice cream on hand so I can use that with the juice and some frozen berries I have, as well as ice. Does the yogurt make a big difference?

If it doesn't come from DQ or Orange Julius, leave me out of it. :p

I used to love Orange Julius, but drinking a Fruit Julius for the first time in years after smoothies left a lot to be desired. It was like drinking flavored air. :(

Also, I apparently have no idea what bubble tea is, because what I keep ordering from bubble tea shops turns out to just be smoothies with tapioca.

Well, only if you believe that *all* yogurt base are belong to you. ;)

Not all. I don't like yogurt smoothies at all, but I love the fruit/ice mixtures. Jamba Juice. Berry Lime Sublime, Caribbean Passion, and Mango A Go-Go. If I drowned in a vat of one of those I'd die a happy man.

Aww shucks, not what I thought this thread was about...moving on...

:guffaw:

Who knew a thread about smoothies would be so amusing? :p

To answer the OP's questions, I started drinking smoothies last spring as part of my weight-loss regimen (I refuse to call it a diet.) I had a bad habit of sticking to the 3 square meal formula and waiting so long in between meals that I was ravenous by the time I ate ... which meant throwing caution to the wind all too often. I try now to eat more smaller meals.

I make a smoothie in the morning and take it on my commute to work. It's a great way to start the ol' system going in the morning, and it keeps me from doing something stupid like stopping at McDonalds or something on the way to work.

I do not use a yogurt base, as I prefer mine more "drinkable" and less like a milkshake. I always add banana to mine, though, which does tend to add a creaminess to them.

I like to mix it up as far as ingredients go, so as to keep it from getting monotonous. I tend to use whatever's in season during the spring and summer, but lean toward strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.; maybe some mango or kiwi if it's available; peaches, nectarines and apricots can be good, too. when that kind of fruit is no longer available, as someone else said, frozen fruit is a great option. There is all kinds available, and it tends to be pretty affordable. With the frozen fruit, I'll throw it in the blender and pour the liquid over (I like pomegranate with a splash of OJ and some fat-free milk) and let it sit while I'm showering and such, which tends to let the fruit thaw just enough to make a nice smooth smoothie when it's blended.

So, that's it for me. hope it helps, and enjoy your smoothieing. :techman:

Oh, and one final note: I was given a "Magic Bullet" as a gift a few years ago, and find it works perfectly for making smoothies. It comes with 4 mug containers with handles so your blending vessel acts as your drinking vessel as well. bonus.

I'm a big fan of smoothies, though I have yet to make my own. Smoothie King, TCBY, even McDonalds... I've tried them all. Most places add a ton of sugar into them, which is completely unnecessary (there's already plenty of natural sugar in the fruit) and kinda takes the healthiness out of them. Yogurt is optional - you definitely don't need it to make a smoothie. For me, I think the best ingredients are strawberries, banana (just not too much) and orange juice.

I asked for, and received, a blender for Christmas. I plan to start making my own once the weather warms up (it's way too frakking cold right now!). It's cheaper than buying them at a store, plus you can control the ingredients that go into them and they should be much healthier.

I just made one that is awesomely good. It includes frozen strawberries, vanilla ice cream, and a generous portion of pineapple-orange juice. Soooo good!!!!
