Watched it for Debra Messing and Christian Borle (I've had a crush on him since I saw him in Legally Blonde

) but wasn't interested in the premise. But I'm suprised how much I liked it, I just hope we see more of the actual behind the scenes stuff like writing, casting, rehearsing etc., not just "We wrote a new song!" *poof* "Performance!" week after week.
I did not like that there was so much focus on the Karen character and her private life, I don't care if her parents want her to move back to Iowa and I don't care about her boyfriend. He seems to be a good guy but I just don't care about that stupid relationship and I already know that he will start whining that she's never home as soon as rehearsals start and she will cry because she fears her dream of being a Broadway star will ruin her relation ship.
Anjelica Huston's divorce drama is okay, I could do without it, but at least it threatens the production of Marylin which makes it not completely unrelated.
I don't like the assistant, he screwed up by releasing the video and there was no point in hiring him back, his "Being part of a musical made me feel complete" story didn't move me at all, there are probably thousands of people like him in New York, I didn't believe for a second that Tom would care about that, he probably heard it dozens of times from people who weren't idiots. He should have sucked him off to get his job back.
I like Ivy and think she should get the part, mainly because she's doesn't have a boring boyfriend and her annoying mom is just an unseen character on the telephone.

But seriously, I like her much better than Karen.
My favorite minor character: Dennis, the hot dancer! I hope we see more of him.
If this show is a success I hope they keep only a few actors for the next season/musical: Messing, Borle and Huston. They should bring in new directors and actors for the musical every year, maybe keep Ivy as a supporting character who does not get a part in season 2's musical and then as a main character again for season 3. It's fine if Tom and Julia want to work with her again, but not every year.
They could and probably should use Smash as a showcase for Broadway talent.
