Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Karim...

Mr. Scott

Commander
....El Mahdi.

Of course, the person with the name as long as the Nile River is the actor who plays Julian Bashir, who thankfully shortened his name to Alexander.

His Wiki article states that he was born in Sudan of an English mother and a Sudanese father. I take it that his father is Arabic and not black. The Sudanese Arabs run that country and are killing the blacks in Darfur and elsewhere for oil and power. Maybe if his mother left him in Africa, he would now be an oil warlord with four wives and lots of shotguns. Or not. Moving on....

Is he a practicing Muslim? Are there any Hollywood actors who are of the Islamic faith? I would think that the Muslims would object to one of them working in the entertainment industry for a variety of reasons. Alexander seems to be the "Middle Eastern dude" that is called for roles, much like Kal Penn the Indian or the handful of Hispanic and Asian players.

Maybe a good HBO series would be him as a single man who has to juggle his social/sex life against being a Muslim. Somewhat like Big Love with the Mormons.

He seems for some reason like women who are older than him, which is a bit odd since he was kind of the male "eye candy" if it were. Nana Vistor is eight years older than him. He was also involved with Kim Cattrell who is 9 years older than him.

Personally, I think he is a positive face to what Middle Eastern people and Muslim people are like, instead of the violent negativity that is shown on the nightly news in the United States.

I wonder who ended the marriage between him and Nana Visitor. If Nana was anything like Kira pissed off, I am sure he split pretty quickly. Maybe it is because he was the younger of the two and was riding a wave of movie parts earlier in the decade because of his ethnicity. A lot of show business marriages break up when one of them is doing better professionally than the other. It is really not bad advice to never marry with someone of your own work background because it usually causes friction at home.

They gave their kid the name Django El Tahir El Siddig. I wonder what the "El" is for? If I knew the father and son, I would call Alex "El" and the kid "El Junior". I wonder if he has an English name?

"El" simply means "the," in North African dialects of Arabic. (On the Arabian peninsula, you typically see "al.")

Funny...I was thinking of a "West Wing" type show on FOX or USA would be great, with him as a reoccurring secondary, as the President of either Afghanistan or Iraq. (He once played a Saudi prince, I believe, so...)

My take on Gene Roddenberry's optimistic future--a good, honest man, in charge of a nation we freed, helping the US in the War on Terror....

In case you're wondering, Nicole de Boer would be the main character, as the POTUS. :D

(I'm serious--a young idealist, in her mid-30s, facing problems abroad and the turmoil of politics at home. But hey--this is Siddig's thread.)

Re: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Kari

I think he found someone else. And in some middle eastern countries, you take the father's last name to become the childs...
So Django would be Django El Siddig (minus middle names). But I think he is actually Django Visitor

Re: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Kari

Did you realise that Malcolm McDowell (Soran in "Generations") is actually Sid's uncle by marriage?

When Sid changed his screen name, from Siddig El Fadil to Alexander Siddig, Richard Arnold asked him what the story was, for when fans asked about it at conventions.

RA: "Why did you change your onscreen name?"

Sid: "Mischief, mostly."

you just gotta love stereotypes. bloody unbelievable...

unfortunately, as long a minority of muslims keep up their crap (blowing cafe's and shit). its not gonna happen and the majority will have that negative reputation. and the US will just keep up the charade of the "Dangers of Islam".
hey, as long as people listen to that crap, it'll work. they did the same thing during the cold war.

"el" is also used in southern Iraq, but its not as common as in northern africa.

I actually didnt react to his name first time i read it. most of my friends had this WFT look on their faces. its funny, in most european countries you cant have long names. at least not this long. but in the middle east its almost a custom.

Re: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Kari

Whether his marriage didn't work out, who knows and who cares? It's not my concern, and plenty of marriages don't work out.

I find it strange that he always plays Arabic roles, I guess that's Hollywood's biased casting for you. :techman::lol:

In terms of raw acting skills, I think DS9 had the best cast. Brooks, Siddig, Visitor, Shimerman. Hertzler all impressed IMO. TNG, though an excellent series on the whole, had a stellar actor in Sir Patrick Stewart and that's about it (Spiner is the only other notable mention).

Re: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Kari

It saddens me that he is typecast so often! He doesn't even look like he's from the middle east, but he still gets typecast? Well at least he gets roles unlike many of the other ST actors...

Re: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Kari

Slightly OT: years ago, when DS9 was in its final seasons, I was unpacking books in the "sort room" of the old Borders Books in Center City, Philadelphia. I was listening to the NPR (and this was years before 9-11) and the guy being interviewed was talking about negative impressions of Muslims in the media. When he asked if the moderator could think of a single positive Arab or Muslim in the media, both drew a blank. I immediately thought of Bashir and was actually proud to be a Trekkie.

Re: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Kari

I'd have liked to but it either was not a call-in show or it was a re-broadcast, can't remeber which.

Re: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammad Ahmed Kari

I just think it's funny that the two most well known African Americans (that is, born in Africa, naturalized to the U.S.) are Alexander Siddig (el Fadhil) and Charlize Theron.

Was Bashir supposed to be? I mean, I guess the name kind of fits, but he always sounded British to me.

They went on a long casting call to find a US-based middle-aged Arabic actress to play Bashir's mother for an episode of DS9 and, when their search failed miserably, they settled upon Professor Fadwa El Guindi - because she was an academic who was known to be experienced in presenting seminars to large audiences and would be able to carry off her lines.

How is he typecast? Because he often plays people from Middle East? What is wrong with that? Is Tom Hanks typecast because he's played far too many WASPs? Siddig has played the romantic lead ("Cairo Time"), a British Prime Minister ("Doomsday"), an undercover agent fighting against terrorism ("Spooks"), a reformed terrorist ("24"), a prince/foreign minister of an Arab country ("Syriana"), Hannibal Barca (BBC TV movie "Hannibal"), another historical figure, Persian historian and scholar Imad ad-Din ("Kingdom of Heaven"), and Angel Gabriel ("Nativity Story").

Errr, maybe he's being typeast into playing *really important* people? Hey, Tom Hanks has played his share of average joes.

As opposed to the Americans blowing things up on a much larger scale using planes, bombs and drones.

Hey, hey, HEY!

Enough, folks. We don't want the wrath of the mods upon us....

He does have a rather larger-than-life way of reading his lines, so it doesn't surprise me, now that you point it out.

And I agree with Rush Limborg...I don't think the race/country comments are helping anything. :(
