ship speeds

One thing to bear in mind is the different circumstances of the various hyperdrive-equipped empires in the Stargate-verse.

The Goa'uld, like the Wraith, had fast enough hyperdrives to allow them to do what they needed to do - maintain a large-scale empire within their home galaxies. Yet, despite both species having considerable exposure to rivals with superior hyperdrive systems (the Asgard, Ancients and Asurans) neither power were capable of advancing until the era of contact with the Tau'ri.

Any chance the Wraith had at developing their own intergalactic hyperdrives went with the fall of the Ancients and the deactivation of the Asurans - and thus the lack of a fresh supply of Zed-PMs for them to hijack (and even then, the Wraith seem to have a need to make stops in realspace due to the use of organic hulls).

However, the Asgard had a long history of using superior hyerdrives (and without using Zed-PMs to make intergalactic travel possible, to boot) and were likely able to keep enough of an air of mystery about themselves in front of the Goa'uld, or just had an effective counter-intelligence policy, which kept the latter from learning about the superior drives.

However, in the examples shown of superior hyperdrives used by Goa'uld- or Wraith-built ships seem to have a common factor - the Tau'ri.

The Hive ships which made the attempt on Earth stole information about the Asgard-built hyperdrives used by Earth ships in order to facilitate their crossing - and even then, they were not fast enough to stop the Daedalus and Orion from catching them (not least because of the need to exit hyperspace along the way).

The Goa'uld never even got that far - while stealing information from the Tau'ri would be easier than trying to raid the Asgard directly, there is no indication that the Goa'uld have viable intergalactic drives, and the only rival factions which made it even as far as Ida and back (which seems to be closer to the Milky Way than the Pegasus Galaxy) were the MW-Replicators (who stole the Asgard drive tech anyway) and the Ori.

So the evolution of hyperspace tech is only a relatively big deal, in such a short time, to the Tau'ri - since their ships were given progressive boosts by Asgard assistance and the acquistion of Ancient Zed-PMs.
