Shaw's recent art/research projects

Shaw

Commodore

This is a few recent illustrations representing some stuff I've been researching. Most recent being the landing party equipment from The Cage (on 11"x17" sheets)...

I also spent a bit more time on the original plans of the Enterprise, reverse engineering the original layout of the plans (most of my previous work centered on more complete extrapolations of Jefferies' designs). These are 11"x17" representations...

And for those wanting something bigger, here are large scale versions (actual size when printed at 150 dpi)...

And strictly for the fun of it, here is a color illustration from my final 33 inch Enterprise plans (I was just playing around with it to see how it would look)...

Oh glorious! Did you actually track down the original type of rotary switch that was in the communicator, or did you base that off images?

Shaw, your work is inspiring!

The only thing I don't see (and where I *might* be able to contribute something) is that the missing buttons on the lasers were actually typewriter keys! Round typewriter keys.

*EDIT*
Although I've just read that they were added AFTER. Huh. How about that?

Yeah. The props were modified later.

Didn't they get the silver gear things on the back for the second pilot?

Thanks a ton guys!

I had found the rotary dial element at one point, but didn't end up buying it... but I did save screen grabs as a reference.

The measurements for the handlaser mostly came from the one in Jein's collection (which has the typewriter keys on it), I just favor the original clean version.

I had been considering doing two-thirds scale versions of the props similar to my scratch built exploration set (done at the same scale as the AMT Star Trek Exploration Set model kit). I had scratch built masters of TOS props and made molds of them...

... and cast parts...

So having props from The Cage at the same scale would be sorta cool too.

The illustrations are also part of a fantasy project of doing a technical manual. Along those lines I also made rank braids and insignia drawings a few years back...

But it is hard to judge how much interest there would be in my take on some of this stuff.

More recently (this last week) I took some shots of my 33 inch Enterprise replicating the old Viewmaster images...

The images would be better with the use of colored gels and the 1966 AMT Enterprise in place of my Round 2 build of the Republic, but this was mainly just for the fun of it.

I like how you resolved the two Lt. Commander braids and the full Commander braid. Now Spock's ranks and braids make sense. "Lead" Lt. Commander I assume would be assigned to the first officer position, only, to show him above the other Lt. Commanders on the ship like Scotty and McCoy. And in Season 3 when Spock is promoted to full Commander, the solid braids are separated slightly more.

I tend to think Spock's paperwork just hadn't caught up to the Enterprise. Which is why he had Commander's stripes in a few episodes but was referenced as a Lieutenant Commander. Because officially he still was a Lt. Cmdr.

I love this. Tech manuals are probably one of my favorite ideas in Trek and seeing this would be amazing.

I personally am (slowly) gather stills for a Kelvin Trek style tech manual but I am no artist or photographer. But, I love the idea!

I love the idea of the kid-sized models.

But your images based off the old Viewmaster images are SPECTACULAR! I remember those!

Me too!

Honestly, the main thing that keeps me from going down the technical manual path is copyright stuff. By researching the models and props as real world historical artifacts, I keep my stuff safely in the fair use territory. Even though it may seem like a small jump to moving that type of stuff to in-universe, it is still the type of project that I'd want to have CBS's blessing on.

Here are some of my unfinished plans of the 11 foot Enterprise (which I shared with scifieric in the past) and hope to someday complete...

Here are my studies of the decals for the studio models...

And I created clean versions of some of the documents outlining the changes to the Enterprise studio models for the series.

Just bunches of stuff... most of which I'm not sure anyone would be interested in.

Oh man, beware of that scifieric guy!

And of course, you certainly have MY interest with all of this! Wonderful!
