Scotland Trip - Advice on food and sights

Alpha Romeo

Hello all - I am headed to Scotland (Edinburg and headed up to the area of Loch Ness)
Any must do recommendations for food in Edinburg and recommendations on the way to and from the Loch?
Thanks!!

Granted it's been forty (!) years since my family and I visited, but Edinburgh Castle and Urquhart Castle are a must.
I'm sure there were some other locations we saw and ate at, but I can't remember them offhand.

Edinburgh Castle, the National History Museum, and the Surgeons Hall museum are all fantastic.

Food: Mums Great Comfort Food and Wings (both cheap and cheerful)

Drinks: For cocktails, Paradise Palms and Hoot the Redeemer. For pints, Banshees Labyrinth (which also has its own cinema that you can drop in to whenever)

Tell me how it goes. I'm of Scottish descent (I even have a family plaid), and am thinking of going myself someday.

HMY Britannia is definitely worth a look if you're into ships or naval/political history at all (interesting tidbit, the CO of Britannia was considered an official diplomat, so during active service typically held the substantive rank of rear or vice admiral, but was titled as "The Commodore").

Edinburgh is also famous, or perhaps infamous, for it's whiskey tour/tasting experiences, the largest of which is the Diageo Claive Vidiz Whisky Collection (indeed the largest collection in the northern hemisphere, and until 2020 the largest worldwide until beaten out by a private South American collection) housed at https://www.scotchwhiskyexperience.co.uk/ near the castle on the Royal Mile.

How are you travelling? As to eating in Edinburgh, you have more places to eat than you can point a stick at. What do you like? Because there’s not as many nationalities as Glasgow but there’s plenty. Don’t bother with Edinburgh Castle. It’s rubbish compared with some other gems. There are more museums and galleries than a few days would do justice but the National Musem is huge. Drinks are stupidly expensive but unless you go somewhere top notch like The Witchery, the food prices are OK.

As to Loch Lomond, if you’re driving up the A82, you’ll see lots of places to stop. The most popular is prolly Duck Bay Marina but depending on how far you want to go, Luss is pretty and has eateries then further up is Tarbet, which has less on offer but is the crossover to Arrochar and Loch Long. Everything is a bit pricey along the Loch.

Seriously tell me what food you like and I’ll point you there. My favourites are a Turkish restaurant on Leith Street, a fabulous Chinese dumpling (and everything else) place at Tollcross and a really excellent Vietnamese place near the Uni. Other than that, the High Street and Rose Street have more pubs offering grub than there are pigeons in the park.

Needless to say my food bias is Glasgow but I understand you are time limited.

‘Course if all you crave is a McCrispy, be warned they’re well spicy in the UK. Plenty drive thru all over.

When my son-in-law was in the USN they pulled into port in Scotland and a lot of the people there teased the sailors by asking them to say, "Hey man" wherever they went. Maybe Americans are infamous for saying that a lot?

As a genuine Scotsman, I'd say stay at home
It's fucking freezing at the best of times and as Glaswegian, I really can't be doing with Edinburgh or it's castle

Was the liberty port Suffragette City?
