Russle Johnson in star trek

lordsofelsewhen

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
russle Johnson the late actor who played the profesor in giligans island was afan of star trek what role as a cast member or guest would he be suitable for?

I seem to recall that he auditioned for a guest-spot on the show, but I can't remember the character or episode.

Professor Crater from "The Man Trap". Russell Johnson was born in November 1924, DeForest Kelley (Dr. McCoy) was born in January 1920, and Jeanne Bal (Nancy Crater) was born in May 1928. So I would say Russell Johnson could have easily played Prof. Crater, he was in the right age range, in my opinion.

Navigator NCC-2120, USS Entente

He'd of made a great alternate version of Barclay; more competent, but as nerdy and quirky.

Also, a great EMH on another ship...

...perhaps the USS "Minnow" (NCC 101) Jonas Grumby commanding.

ETA: correction, thanks, Lurker! :techman:

It might've been interesting to see him as Lazarus in "The Alternative Factor." Dog of an episode, I know, but it would've been neat to see him in a dual role like that.

He played a badass conniving character in a Big Valley episode, which showed his acting breadth. I forget the Western that he was in. Played a doctor I believe in a supporting role to the star who was sheriff.

In any event, I could see him as Finnegan from Shore Leave or really as a new character as an astrobiologist or similar.

Someone put together a website with a mock Fantastic Four cast from vintage actors with very well done pics and narrative. Johnson was cast as the brainy and pliable Mr. Fantistic. Good fit even comparing the resemblance.

Any male Vulcan character, even Spock himself if Nimoy hadn't been available. He proved on the Island he could spout the scientific jargon.
He might have made a good Zefram Cochrane, he had that dignified quality.
He would have been very convincing as the Horta in Devil in the Dark.... but then so would anyone else.

Alex Ross used Johnson's likeness as Reed Richards in Marvels. It was a really nice fit.

He did actually play an alien in The Invaders! The episode was The Trial and he was the defence counsel for a man who killed an alien in a furnace but there was no body! anyone remember that one?

He also played an alien (posing as a human being) in the classic 1950s sci-fi flick, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE.

And, you know, he might have made a good Zefram Cochrane.

"This Island Earth" as, guess what, a scientist, unwittingly assisting alien Metalunians develop new sources of atomic fuel. TIE, of course was "riffed" with aplomb in the theatrical version of "Mystery Science Theater 3000". When Johnson first appears on screen, Mike (or possibly one of the 'Bots) notes, "What this 'and the rest' crap?!" referencing the way he and DawnWwells were collectively introduced in the first season of "Gilligan's Island".

Sincerely,

Bill
