Ross was a giangtic doofus jackass.

Always enjoyed friends and actually I always thought Ross was the funniest of the characters, along with Monica. Phoebe was more 'weird' than 'funny', Chandler, although I liked him, tried a bit too hard sometimes and Joey overdid the 'thick' thing in later seasons (A foreshadow of what would happen to Homer Simpson). Generally, the bits I found funniest focused on Ross and Monica. As someone else said, Schwimmer was best at the physical slapstick.

Chandler was always my favourite because he was the one I identified most with (commitement phobia, humour as a defence mechanism etc etc)

I always quite liked Ross, although in the latter seasons they dumbed him down a lot. Which was a shame, they just made him into a bit of an annoying buffoon.

He had some of the best moments of the series though, probably the funniest was with the leather trousers. :guffaw:

Ross just basically got more and more insane as the show went along. Shame really because, in the beginning at least, Ross and Rachael was one of the sweetest tv romances ever!

As for favourite lines...

Monica: Everybody knows the camera adds 10 pounds.
Chandler: And exactly how many cameras are on you?

The characters did become more and more of caricatures as the series wore on, watch the first 2-3 seasons and then the last 2-3 seasons to see evidence of this and you'll see how the characters are blurs of themseleves.

Hell, if anything Rachel is the only character that changed for the better as when things started she was a real-worl naive spoiled rich girl and by the end of the series she was a independent career mom.

Everyone else? Again, mostly became caricatures but it seemed, to me, Ross' mutation was the worst. As he went from a smart doofus to just a jackass.

Still, for me, it's a good series that can make me laugh.

Still one of my favourite shows, and I appreciate it more now than I did when it was new. I've probably seen most episodes half a dozen times by now - it's got great rewatch value. Still makes me laugh. Monica was always my favourite character, while Joey annoyed me. Ross I usually liked, except when he was being overly whiny.

The characters did get a bit cartoony/caricaturey, but I don't see it as much as some others seem to. Certainly not as much as on a lot of other comedy shows. Really, it's hard to think of a show where that phenomenon doesn't happen. After a few years, audiences respond to certain aspects of the characters positively, become recognised for certain traits. So the writers play up those quirks more than others. The thing is, the actors are settled in the parts by then so they can pull it off.

Chandler: MtrapdinATMvestiblwithJilGdacr.

Monica: What?

Chandler: MtrapdinATMvestiblwithJilGdacr!

Monica: What?

Chander: Put Joey on the phone!

Joey: What's up, dude?

Chandler: MtrapdinATMvestiblwithJilGdacr!

Joey: You're trapped in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre?!?

One of the best episodes was the one where it's a "what-if" episode where Ross is still married to Carol in a strained marriage, Monica is still fat, Chandler has quit his job to become a free-lance writer, Joey is still on Days of Our Lives, Phoebe works for Meryl-Lynch as a high-powered trader, and Rachel didn't walk out in her wedding during the pilot.

Funny, funny, episode.

Ross "to spice up their marriage" had a 3-way with Carol and friend of hers (Susan) the night before and is talking to Joey about it.

Ross: Joey, have you ever had a threesome?
Joey: ... Look, Ross, you're great and all and Carol is a beautiful woman but I dunno...
Ross: No. I sorta had one last night.
Joey: Really?! How was it?
Ross: Eh...
Joey: Eh? Did you do it right?
Ross: I'm not sure, it started off OK but the other one kept kicking me away.
Joey: But I bet you saw a lot of stuff.
Ross: Yeah, I saw a lot of stuff!
Joey: Got kind of bored, eh?
Ross: Yeah. I made a sandwich, though.
Joey: Really? What kind?
Ross: Roast beef.
Joey: Was it good?
Ross: It really was!

Group discussion at The Central Perk. Joey enters.

Chandler: "Hey Joey. What would you do if you were omnipotent?"
Joey: "Whoa. I'd have to off myself, because if 'Little Joey' didn't work, then there's be no sense to living."
Chandler: *puzzled* "No. Ahhm--nipotent."
Joey: *puzzled -- eyes open wide* "Oh man! I'm so sorry to hear about that."

Joey is talking to a encyclopedia salesman (played by Penn Jillette.)

Salesman: "Tell me what do you know about vulcanized rubber?
Joey: "Spock's birth control!"
Salesman: (chuckles) "Joey, you need these."

Ross's ultimate douche moments are when he gets all whiny and needy about Rachel. Or Emily. Or Charley. Or any other girl he happens to crush on. Probably one of the worst was when he went totally nuts when he found out Rachel and Joey were an item. "We can have fajitas!"

Having said that, I usually found him funny. Most of the Friends have their annoying but endearing quirks. Ross is probably the least endearing though, it's true!

I feel only hatred towards Rachel. I'm "meh" on all but Chandler who I liked. Overall, I never thought the show was that good.

"This is ancient Earth's most foolish program! Why does Ross, the largest Friend, not simply eat the other five?"

I never really watched "Friends", but a girl I used to date told me that I was the living embodiment of Ross. Now your thread title has got me worried . . .

^

I wouldn't worry, I don't think Ross is nearly as bad as people are making him out to be. There were a few episodes that he was annoying in, but that's true of all of the characters. Ross' "thing" is that he was smart, sweet, but goofy and dorky sometimes.

My least favorite was definitely Phoebe, favorites were Ross and Chandler. Monica is another favorite because she is so much like me.
