News Rick Moranis to return to Honey I Shrunk the Kids Role for Reboot, Shrunk

Josh Gad has announced that Rick Moranis, who starred in the first three movies in the franchise, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, will be returning to reprise his role in the new sequel/reboot, Shrunk. Gad will be playing Moranis's character's adult son, who accidentally shrinks his own children, much like his father before him. The movie is based off an idea from Gad, and is being directed by Joe Johnston, who made his directorial debut with the first movie. Moranis had been retired from actor for a while now, so it's pretty impressive they got him to come back for this.
 
Woohoo. Out of retirement for both Johnston and Moranis. Johnston said he was going to retire after the last Narnia movie in 2017

Disney changed this from a Disney+ movie to a full-on theatrical release based on the quality of newcomer Todd Rosenberg's script. Then they managed to surprisingly snag both Joe Johnston and Moranis out of retirement pretty quickly. I'm cautiously optimistic.

This looks like Josh Gad signed up for yet another shitty (non-Frozen/Little Monsters) Josh Gad movie and (possibly) oopsy daisied into a legit good script from a complete unknown.

For anyone okay with spoilers, the film allegedly deals with
Moranis, Gad and Gad's kids coming to terms with Moranis's wife's recent death. Hence why there's no "Honey" in the title, since "Honey, I'm Mourning Your Death" just doesn't sound like a fun blockbuster

Exciting news.

Would have been better had it been for "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" / "Spaceballs: Rise of the Schwartz" / "Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens".
 
Found the expanded rumored premise:
"Szalinski's wife got cancer, so Szalinski tried to make an invention to shrink it away, but he ran out of time and she died. He's spent the interim holing himself away from the world with his inventions. If true, it would be an homage to both Moranis' real-life struggle and the fact that that Diane's actor passed away a few years back. It fits with the new title, as they've taken "Honey" out as that refers to Diane."

I like it if true. No one's ambitious like a first-time film writer given that sweet, sweet legacy sequel blockbuster paycheck.
 
Oh, there will be no ambition. It's a Disney property, not only will he be told what he can and what he cannot do, there'll be a board room of people going over the script and demanding changes here and there, complete re-writes, and additions.



The only thing I hope for is a film at least as enjoyable as the first, and to be scored by an old-school composer like Bruce Broughton, Alan Silvestri, even Robert Folk if he can harken back to his 1980's days. You know, since James Horner is dead now. At least Broughton has a connection to the franchise, having scored the short film "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience".

Actress Marcia Strassman who played Diane Szalinski herself died from Cancer in 2014. When I first heard of this movie early today I figured they would have the wife, mother die off camera since the last film to address her absence. On top of which Rick Moranis own wife died of cancer in the early 90s. That was a huge factor in his mostly retiring. To raise their kids. Obviously this pitch would have a personal appeal to him.

When first saw news of his return to acting on Twitter I assumed it was for Ghostbusters 3. But I am glad it’s this. He was great as Louis Tully. But it was a stretch to keep him involved even in the 2nd film. He was the main character in these films. Even if it’s a supporting role for a reboot it’s likely a more meaningful role than he would have in Ghostbusters
 
It's a deeper role for him to play too. Moranis's comedy chops were never in question, but the original film and Parenthood both allowed him to branch out a bit by being a husband and a father instead of just a wacky comedy role. Not that Wayne Szalinski couldn't be occasionally wacky, but there's a surprising amount of seriousness and depth to the role in the first film despite its "famous comedian plays a dad in a kids' movie" origins.
 
This is one of those out of left field announcements I was not expecting but thrilled to hear.

The summer of 1989 I turned 11 and was a HUGE moment in my movie fandom. A remember specific films before that. But I seeing everything from that year. Batman, Ghostbusters, Last Crusade, BTTF Part II. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids was Right up there too.

Never thought about more sequels, largely because Rick was retired. I think it a great project for him to return. Particularly with Joe Johnston directing. Maybe if he is on good terms with Disney again he will do a Rocketeer reboot too!!

I have been thinking about Rick Moranis lately before this news. Reading a book about comedy films of the 80s. How they were largely dominated by the casts of SNL and SCTV. Rick gave new interviews for it. It clear his retirement was more than just his wife’s death. He was getting bored being just a Movie Star. Meaning unhappy just being an actor in movies other people wrote and directed. All of the press to promote. It was no longer fun like when he started out.

I just saw something the other day about a potential Rocketeer reboot focused on a black woman as the main character. I only saw it on one site, and I can't remember which one.
I am a bit suspicious since they recently did a Disney Jr. series with a black girl, and I have to wonder if maybe someone heard about that, and thought it was a movie.
 
Well, it was only a matter of time. Admittedly, I was never a big fan of these movies, but they could be fun, and if it drags him out of retirement, one can only hope we'll start seeing more from him.

I've a feeling someone with more raw, real talent than Eric Clapton and Peter Gabriel combined will take the muzak industry by storm first - followed shortly after by a Spaceballs sequel (despite the ST being ripe for it).

It’ll be interesting to see if they retcon this over “Honey We Shrunk Ourselves” (which featured Eve Gordon as Diane Szalinski) or if the keep the direct-to-video sequel in continuity.

Of course it would be nice if Disney would release it (and Blew Up The Kid—-We Shrunk Ourselves was shot on film but edited on videotape) on Blu-Ray. It looks like they may’ve released a version in 2017 through the Disney Movie Club, but there’s been no general release. And I still have my VHS’s of the first 2 movies as I didn’t think it was worth it to upgrade to DVD years ago as Disney used the 4:3 90’s broadcast masters, the same that was used for the VHS.
