Rapelay virtual rape game banned by Amazon

I knew immediately that this was a Japanese game. Everybody knows the Japanese have weirder fetish games involving cartoons than anyone.

It's not just Japan.

No it's definitely not just Japan, agreed.

Everyone remembers Custer's revenge and it was offensive (though it's hard to compare an Atari 2600 game to anything with modern graphics). Actually, I don't mean to single out Japan. I love Japanese culture and I've taken three years of Japanese language. My fiancee and I plan on living in Tokyo and I have friends who are Japanese; THEY definitely think the tentacle rape cartoons and prevalence of hentai is weird. What's even weirder is that the hentai stuff produced has such a large AMERICAN audience.

While it is Amazon's rightful choice to self-censor what's sold on their site, I just wish they'd be a little more open-minded and less conscious of knee-jerk obscenity stompers.

What is sold on Amazon? I've only ever bought books from them. Do they sell hardcore pornography? BDSM paraphernalia? AO-rated games? Was this a game that was singled out after objections were raised, one of a class of games, or an oddity that wasn't in-line with existing policies?

Can't say I'm surprised that Amazon wouldn't stock such games, or that I object to their refusing to stock such games, it's certainly no more censorship than the MPAA is. Would be nice to know exactly how it went down though.

One thing I'm curious is that since this game was released in 2006, does that mean that Amazon has been selling it for the past 3 years ?
And decided to withdraw it now that some made a fuss about it ?

If I read the article correctly, the producers just recently decided to make it available outside of Japan, and specifically to the UK, and that's what prompted the decision to not let it be sold on Amazon.

You watch, the way America is going, these type's of games will be sold here sooner then you think! :(
What are you talking about? They've been sold here since they've come into existence. And that's a good thing. Its a yardstick for freedom. Do you hate freedom :(?

I like Yaoi.
I've never found any that was very explicit at all - kinda softcore... but then I haven't looked very hard.

I may be liberal, but these kinds of games sicken me. There's nothing amusing or entertaining about rape. I have no objection if it's shown in a movie or is in a book in the context of how awful it really is -- Oz certainly succeeded in that. Self-censorship is fine with me. Couldn't the programmers find something else to create? Geez. -- RR

To each their own. In much the same way as violent video games helped me vent frustration during school (so that I didn't explode and knife someone), maybe these games help potential sexual predators vent their desires in a safe manner.

This game is disgusting, and the people involved with it should be made public so everyone know which sick fucks are making games where you rape someone as the goal. What's their next game? Raping children?

As opposed to murder simulators? Why are they better?

Well, just wait a few weeks for someone to bring this up on a slow news day & wait for organizations such as the "Canadian National Action Committee on The Status of Women", to go thermonuclear on this company & sue its stockholders into personal bankruptcy. Or, the company issues a heartfelt apology & the developers get quietly TERMINATED.

Sad state of affairs when such things are actually possible. However, considering the number of objectionable rape-themed titles published by the company, I find your scenarios highly unlikely.

On what grounds could they be sued, anyway?

Just a guess, but, MAYBE, just MAYBE, on Human Rights grounds, based on the accumulated foundations of "Assault" (sexual and otherwise) cases that helped bring about "The United Nations Declaration Of Human Rights". Especially considering the *ages* of the women portrayed during the offensive acts, (inferred/implied, or otherwise,) in "Rapelay" & the company's other products, there may be a feasible chance to go after each and every single company EMPLOYEE involved in creating/developing the offensive concepts on each game, (rather than the company as a whole,) on "Pedophilia" / "Obscenity" charges. Perhaps even go after the company's financial officers on "Facilitation" / "Solicitation" charges, "Accomplice To ------- (Before / During / After) The Fact" charges. What have you.

Even if you can't go after the companies involved or its employees on Human Rights / Sexual Offences, you can still consider a court order to have existing copies of the offending titles recalled/destroyed, a 100% ban of identical / reasonably similar concept development in entertainment media, at the company's expense and / or restrictions on sales of potentially-offending titles from these companies to the U.S. & Canada, among other strong trade routes.

...and who's human rights do a rape-themed video game violate?

Who do we book for all the cold-blooded murders of innocent bystanders I've committed in various video games over the years?

As far as pedophilia goes - pedophilia involves lusting after pre-pubescent girls. These girls all seem to have breasts. Also, as they are fictional and animated, I'm not sure it applies as child porn. Certainly doesn't in the United States.
