Question: Mirror Kirk's Uniform

Emperor Norton

Captain
Captain
I've been wondering for a while, is the Terran Kirk's uniform, as seen when the crew goes into the Mirror Universe, not the standard captains outfit for the Mirror Universe, but rather a casual Captain's outfit just like Kirk's green wraparound? It would make sense if it were: Kirk was wearing his green uniform, we see that the Mirror crew still wears a standard uniform, albeit somewhat different.

However, there could also be critiques. How, then, to explain the uniqueness of Spock's uniform? And it seems like every Mirror Universe book or comic assumes that this uniform is the standard captain's uniform.

Thoughts?

What tickles me is that Kirk and company beamed right into their counterpart's clothes. I get why it had to be that way to avoid instant detection, and that the transporter is pure magic to begin with, but it's a bit implausible that the people would switch and their clothing not. Or was it perhaps merely their consciousness that shifted?

That works well for the original TOS episode, but doesn't really match up with what we see in later DS9 episodes. OK, so the first time Kira and Bashir get there via the wormhole, but later forays are made using common Transporter technology, which somehow move the entire person across the dimensional barrier!

As King Daniel suggests, I've always believed it was a transfer of consciousness, not a bodily transfer. It's one reason I don't like the things DS9 did with the Universe, because they seem to treat "Mirror, Mirror" as if it was a physical transfer. It removes an element of mystery about the whole concept of what the Mirror Universe actually is, making it just "another dimension" story.

Regarding Mirror Kirk's outfit, I assume it's an optional casual duty uniform. Beardo Spock seems to prefer wearing his dress uniform.

Regarding the sleeveless gold wraparound tunic, it's a garment that not just anyone can pull off. Shatner was at a point in his life where he could make anything look good, but fans who've made the costume for themselves are taking a major fashion risk. You can easily end up looking like a Star Trek fan with an intense interest in musical theater.

Anybody else get John Byrne's new photo-comic? It's a sequel to Mirror, Mirror, using stills from the original episode plus a lot of mediocre Photoshopping.

And he gets paid for that?

Yes, yes he does. Which wouldn't be so bad, as he is a capable storyteller, and his Photoshop skills are far from lacking. But he, and the members of his forum, have this distinct and distracting problem of convincing themselves that John Byrne is the best thing to ever happen to Star Trek, when in fact ByrneTrek, as it is better referred to, is just an overblown fanfic. While they're well told and entertaining, there is not one single John Byrne written Star Trek tale that fits into Trek canon, even just TOS, like he wants. Byrne just doesn't get it.

As an addendum, would Captain Spock have worn the type of uniform Kirk did, would would he have continued to wear the uniform he did as Science officer? Or would it be the same style as his Science officer's uniform, but a gold color?

It wouldn't make any difference, as long as he keeps his cool-looking goatee!

Probably the latter.

As I said, I expect that senior officers in the Empire get to wear whatever they want. And Spock, being a Vulcan and thus not wanting to show off, wouldn't be likely to wear a sleeveless uniform.

From a costumier's point of view, that pic demonstrates what a horrible fabric Spock's tunic must have been to work with. There are gathers all up the sleeve! It does look grand though

It's fairly entertaining and possibly the most fanwanky thing I've ever seen.

I've got it and the first one, and both aren't bad.

Yes, he does. And as I said above, it isn't bad.
