Power Rangers

Lupin X's debut was today but here's some nice press photos

https://natalie.mu/eiga/news/285989

LuPat X is Noel Takao, played by Seiya Motoki.

Seiya has done some parkour so that will be cool to see.

I've been watching a few episodes of Carranger on ShoutFactory, and so far I'm not very impressed. I gather it's supposed to be a parody of Super Sentai within Super Sentai, but while there are some bits that feel like poking fun at the franchise's tropes, mostly it doesn't seem that different from the comedy of Zyuranger or Kakuranger, just without the serious stuff to balance it (at least not so far). And just like those series, the Carrangers are an undifferentiated mass for the first few episodes, with no distinct personality traits. I'm now into the inevitable batch of early episodes where each Ranger gets a solo focus for the first time, but they've been so devoid of any previous personality that their attributes in these episodes feel arbitrary and there's no basis for empathizing with them. What makes comedy work best is character, and so far the villains and the alien mentor have more characterization than the Rangers. So the comedy we're getting isn't all that effective. It just feels like a dumber and goofier season than usual, rather than an effective parody.

Still, I was tempted to give up on the aforementioned prior seasons that were similarly superficial at this early stage, and actually did give up on Zyuranger for some time before finally deciding to resume it. So I guess I'll stick with it and see if it gets more interesting later, though I may take my time working through it.

I have always liked the Gattai/Megazord formation sequence for this one -- the way the Ranger Vehicles assemble the giant robot horizontally while driving and only lift to vertical upon completion. It feels more plausible than most such sequences.

Hello to our yearly "6th ranger/additional hero"

Noel isn't really hiding his identity in either form. He's openly fighting with both sides and changing forms right in front of them, not really caring which side he's on at the moment. There's enough reason for both teams to trust him.

As expected we got to see our newest addition to the cast show off his parkour skills.

I love that Noel has agitated both sides and can't wait to see how Kairi reacts. Tsukasa coming to a conclusion seems like a natural thing for her to do

"Hey maybe he's infiltrating the lupinrangers"

He knows Goodie and possibly Kogure and modified the lupin collection pieces to be VSV vehicles

Lupinranger collection pieces this week are dairanger and bioman

I immediately figured out what the ganglar monster of the week was based on

http://powerrangers.wikia.com/wiki/Zarudan_Hou

  • Zarudan also draws insperation from Sun Wukong (AKA: The Monkey King) from the 16th century Chinese classical novel Journey to the West due to his primary weapon being a Bo Staff and has the ability to generate and ride on a cloud (Due to the "Smoke muddles his eyes/La fumée l'embrouille les yeux" piece from the Lupin Collection) .

I'm trying out something this week since this website has already uploaded Kamen Rider build to episode 39. If it doesn't work I can go back to the other way.

"Shall we begin the experiment?"
;)

Episode 23

Episode 21
Boy, that escalated quickly.

That episode was way sadder than I expected, and the debut of Rose Copter was sort of downplayed by the fact that Sento was not in his right state of mind when using it. I mean, his first use of Hazard killed a guy. That's... wow, Build. Going for the jugular.

It's really interesting to see two sides at war both feel bad about the loss, and really interesting to see Sawatari not rip Sento's head off for killing his friend.

I love Grease. He is not exactly a bad guy. All they want is to survive. Grease's first line in his first appearance sorta shows that it kinda pains him to see citizens of any nation being affected by their actions.

Now, with the first major casualty in their Rider War, things may become more intense.

I liked the colour filter/grading they used for this episode to fit the theme.

Episode 22.

What a whopper

Who knew a single, episode-long Rider vs Rider fight could be so enthralling?

Sawatari made the same sacrifice as his buddies and now his life is tied directly to his powers, Sento completely pwned Grease in that grudge match, we got to debut a couple of Best Matches and even a Super Best Match, then Ryuga saves the day at the end AND masters his own Hazard. We even get an emotional mess of Misora on the sidelines all the while, and Sewa hustling to make things okay.

Now enter Rogue. This time, no one expected to see the new Rider do anything but cameo, and it was a way more interesting cameo by tying directly into the political end of the happenings.

Episode 23
Dayum, Build. The debut of the Brothers was one thing, but then to have them kill off another of Sawatari crew... this show is some intense stuff. And then there's the matter of Himuro/Rogue. He's way more powerful than Sparkling and Cross-Z Charge .No idea how Hazard would fare against him, but Sento's not in a hurry to find out. At least he has Ryuga to shoot him out of berserker mode before things get really bad. Had it not been for that "Sawatari sees Mii-tan" moment at the start, this would've been a really depressing episode

I would have expected Utsumi to be Rogue instead of Gentoku.

Gentoku is great and all, but his fall from grace was so recent that selling out to become Seito's champion doesn't land like it should. Utsumi's return would have sold it much better because of Gentoku betraying him AND his being presumed dead... but I digress.

Noel isn't really hiding his identity in either form. He's openly fighting with both sides and changing forms right in front of them, not really caring which side he's on at the moment.

Yeah, that's very unexpected. With the dual-identity gimmick, I thought he was going to be more secretive, with neither side knowing that he was working on the other side.

So far I find Noel a bit annoying, a bit too smug. He doesn't yet have enough layers to make him interesting, although I expect these writers to give them to him.

As for Build, yes, they went to some pretty intense places in these. They also advanced the war arc really quickly.

I was confused when they introduced those "Bros" and had Sento say they were using the "Kaiser" technology that some guy I'd never heard of had created. But I looked it up on the Kamen Rider Wiki, which confirmed my guess -- that's a plot element from the crossover movie, which of course I haven't seen. Anyway, it looks like a Kaiser is something more than a Smash but less than a Kamen Rider.

Just found this out since someone was talking about last weeks Lupin collection piece being a dairanger prop

The actor who played ShiShiranger committed suicide on May18th

It's called "La fumée t’embrouille les yeux/Smoke gets in your eyes" and it allows the user to create clouds, control them and even ride them, à la Goku.
Its name is inspired by the song Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by The Platters.
It resembles SeiJishi, personal mecha of ShishiRanger,

I'm really hoping PR Beast Morphers is a ground-up Reboot of Power Rangers, similar to RPM's approach.

PR desperately needs it. The current shows are embarrassing and unwatchable. It also gets really convoluted launching a fresh new series in a world where there have already been thousands of giant monster attacks.

IMO PR needs to start fresh and worldbuild a new world, with a fresh tone that can draw in a new audience (ideally Transformers fans). The current PR fanbase isn't enough to keep PR afloat. The failure of the recent film proved it.

Well, Gekisou Sentai Carranger has been getting better, now that the characters have been getting developed a bit more. And the plots definitely do tend to be sillier than usual. But I just watched an episode (#26) whose climax revolved around a couple of characters telling bad jokes to a toddler (it's complicated), and the translations of the jokes didn't work at all, probably because they were puns. I wonder if I should track down a fansub of it, since those tend to explain the Japanese-language puns with textual notes rather than trying to substitute English puns or just leaving them unexplained.

I notice the show features a number of familiar locations I've seen in other Sentai, like the vacation retreat that I think was also in Megaranger and the amusement park that's probably been in several seasons (I wonder if it's the same park that was in LvP).

.

Here's another translation. I looked at Shoutfactory's version and kissasians. I understood the kissasian upload

http://kissasian.ch/Drama/Gekisou-Sentai-Carranger/Episode-26?id=16309

The kissasian version I believe belongs to a group that used to do carranger.

"Someone served me a well done steak.
"Well. What's done is done"

Here's another translation.

I dunno, those just seem like alternate English substitutions for the real jokes. I was hoping for something that would explain the actual Japanese puns they were making, like the fansubs you post for LvP and KRB often do.

Also, that site is really ad-heavy and slow. Not fun.

Ah. Yeah Tvnihon who is one of the top fansub groups hasn't gotten to Carranger. They likely won't since shoutfactory is releasing an official version of Carranger. Once an official release has been announced they pull their versions.

Their version of Megaranger subs were removed once Shoutfactory released Megaranger on dvd. I too enjoy their added touches to the text.

I get that they want to people to support the official release but I was hoping they'd get to do GoGoV/Lightspeed Rescue.

Pro's and Con's

Pro-Official release
Con- Simplified subtitles.

Here's Shoutfactory's preview of GoGoV

Build

Episode 24
Otoya is crashing with the main characters now.

Usually in Kamen Rider shows the opening foreshadows future events. We finally see Misora going green eyed

It was hilarious seeing Cross-Z missing his flight and having to run all the way to the Skywall.

And Sento loses his bottles again!

Episode 25

Rogue remains merciless, and we got some sort of info on Misora.

Now all of Grease's expendable subordinates are history, meaning it's either Grease's destiny to join them around finale time or finally accept his reluctant allies as actual friends, or both.

I like how they've been treating Hazard. They've given their dangerous weapon real value and precedence. Sento hates using Hazard, but he's constantly in situations where the choice is either use it or die, so he continues to bite the bullet. In only a handful of appearances, he's already killed someone against his will, turned on his running buddy, tried to kill himself, turned on the new recruit, and now is about to kill his best friend. It's not just another stopgap that wears the hero down or the hero always corrals just in time, it's a tool of war that's being treated as a tool of war.

Episode 26
So we have the revelation that leads to Sento creating the Full Full bottle in the course of one (time-skipped) week, and more Rider MMA. Sawatari's battle was pretty fun, but this show... we thought Sawa was questionable, then she was friendly, and now she's definitely questionable.

I'll be adding my thoughts on episode 21 of Lupinranger VS Patoranger later.

I'll be away from the computer next week so I won't be able to post/download Lupinranger VS Patoranger episode 22.

I'll still be able to post thoughts on Build's next three episodes

LVP- Credits have been updated slightly to include Noel and his trains. Still not much to update on the villain side. Usually by episode 20 one of the first generals has died already but we still have the original group and Zamigo.

Last week's Lupin Collection piece was something from 1990's Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman

Noel continues to confound everybody, including an extended fight sequence against the Lupins as Lupin X this week. Also what a weird MotW we had.

I think I count 3 ways that Noel is playing everyone. He says one thing to the Patoranger then one to the Lupinrangers. He also has his own motive against Kogure.

Perhaps Kogure just wants to gather them so they're out of safe hands. Noel probably has a family member or significant other that could benefit from all the pieces collected

I don't like the slightly rejiggered intro music in the LvP main titles. I liked the original version better.

The live-action stunt scenes this year have really been raised to a new level. They make excellent use of drones to get dynamic camera moves.

I don't know if it's really fair use the movie to judge the success of the shows since it was pretty much unrelated to the shows. It was made by a totally different group of people, and had a different target audience.

Excited for a Sakuya episode? Just kidding. I should have it up on Sunday July 15

I wonder if Noel’s actor is in the lupin x suit doing to stunts. The faux fight with the lupinrangers was really well done

I just finished Gekisou Sentai Carranger. It turned out to be a lot of fun. The characters never developed that much depth, but the humor was pretty effective, and some of the more standard dramatic/peril stuff was good too. There was some terrific action along with the more spoofy stuff; a highlight was when Red Racer leapt out of VRV Robo's cockpit and battled a Bowzock monster on top of the captive RV Robo to free it. I remember that sequence impressing me when I first saw it on Power Rangers Turbo.

Carranger also has one of the better incidental music scores I've heard in Super Sentai. The main heroic melody they used in several of the big action cues throughout the season is really catchy and I've had it stuck in my head for weeks. I also like the very Akira Ifukube-esque cue for the Victrailer, the carrier containing the VR Vehicles. I wonder if they went for an Ifukube sound in that cue because its debut was against a giant evil robot with a somewhat Godzilla-ish appearance.

Episode 27

We get some more elements from the cross over movie that has yet to be subbed since it’s still out

What a cool debut for Rabbit Rabbit. Seeing Sento overcome the limitations of his past self (and with a cute little robo rabbit) was pretty awesome. The stuff before was nice too, but what an incredible battle.

Episode 28
Tank Tank's debut was great. The mini tank army isn't quite as good as the robo rabbit, but the finisher where he basically turns into Getter 3 and starts blasting away at Rogue was hilarious in how much it committed to it. The plot with Sawa was about what we expected, and for now, she is still on our side. But things are only going to get worse for our heroes....

Episode 29

Even if using "Ode to Joy" ironically is pretty much cliche by now, the usage of it in the start of this episode was effective. War has begun. Again. The emotions are running high, and seeing Sento and Kasumi using the power of his posse to land a blow was immensely satisfying. This show's been consistently delivering basically since it began, and this week is no exception

Also it’s about time the credits get updated

That's twice now that they've flashed back to the crossover in introducing a new Kaiser form. It's a little confusing, not having seen the crossover.

I've remarked that what I like about LvP is how character-driven it is, and KRB is the same way. The writing really stresses the recurring question of what the Riders fight for, which is basically another way of asking what the characters' motivations are. As silly and over-the-top as the action is, it's action that reveals who the characters are and how they react, and that makes it effective.

Episode 27 seemed to break the fourth wall a bit. When the Seito president saw Sento's new gadget, he said "That's the zhuin zhuin etc.", referring to the onomatopoeia gag in the recap. So a character in the main story acknowledged awareness of something from the out-of-continuity recap.

I'm a little annoyed that "Best Match" turns out to be merely the lowest of several match categories, surpassed by "Just Match" and "Miracle Match." How can there be things better than "Best"? I'm reminded of how it annoyed me in Digimon that "Ultimate" was only the penultimate level, surpassed by "Mega," though apparently that was only in the English translation, so there's less of an excuse for it there than there is here, where the terminology is being chosen by people who aren't native English speakers.

(Haven't seen 28 or 29 yet.)

Caught up now... Some really interesting stylistic experiments going on now, like the anime-esque symbolic bits where the armor fades and we see the people inside conversing. I loved episode 28's use of on-set projections as symbolic flashbacks for Rogue -- very imaginative and theatrical. And of course the opening of episode 29 was very impressive.

The new transformation method (I didn't catch the name, if it has one yet) is even more overcomplicated than the previous ones, with Build having to jet around all over the place to put the armor pieces on one by one. It's a good thing Japanese villains always respect henshin etiquette and never try to blast someone mid-change. (Although there was a bit in the climactic arc of Carranger where the Bowzock tried to do just that while VRV Robo was forming, but they still waited too long to actually fire.)

And that cliffhanger on 29... wow. I'm tempted to skip ahead and keep watching.
