Pan Am 1960s period series in development

My first thought was the brief clips in Almost Famous of his sister in her Orange uniform...

The new drama is from “West Wing” director Thomas Schlamme and “ER” writer Jack Orman. Both of which are major names in their respective fields.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Christina Ricci is in talks to play a lead role and Australian actress Margot Robbie will make her American debut as one of the sexy stewardesses.

Ricci is expected to play Maggie, a stewardess who has a bohemian lifestyle in Greenwich Village when she is not working.

We got a name actress finally.
Good to hear the pilot is in production this season.

A free-spirited beatnik chick who's also an airline stewardess? Sounds like a circa-1960 Playboy fantasy come to life!

Yeah, "bohemian" as used here is probably code for bisexual. :D

Re: Pan Am 1960s period series greenlighted

Well the series is happening.

ABC has ordered a slew of new female-centric, serialized series including Good Christian Belles (which looks to be a higher-quality successor to the long-past-desperate Desperate Housewives), fairy-tale saga Once Upon a Time, workplace series Pan Am

Interesting that ABC a major network will be going after a serialized series ala Mad Men or Heroes. They did this though with the Defying Gravity sci-fi series but that was a co-production. I am looking forward to this 1960s period series.

Why did you resurrect a 2 month old thread when there are already 2 threads dealing with pilots and the fall tv schedule?

Sounds like an interesting series.

Maybe they will make a reference to Kubrick's 2001, considering that the PAN-AM company served as consultants on the 1968 MGM film, and their logo was used on the shuttle that transported Heywood Floyd to the space station.

trailer

and here is the 1:45 trailer for the series:
Pan Am - ABC Network

Not to mention getting non-stock-footage shots of 707s and DC-8s taking off with smoking JT3Ds.
sorry Justin at :57 you can see no smoke at all from the all-CGI plane.

they even have a helicopter landing on top of the Pan Am building in NYC...all-CGI too...

it looks great though! like Mad Men on ABC.

Re: trailer

I'd watch that! Makes me wish flying was still glamorous. Heck, even in the nineties flying was nice compared to now.

Is there any other source for this? It's not available outside the US unfortunately :(

Sorry I'm a little late, thanks for the link. I can live without the smoke up at cruise like that. That Jet Clipper looks real purty, but it looks like whoever did the CG model mirrored the right wing for the left, so there's a compressor on number one engine where there shouldn't be.

The show looks more soapy than I'd like, but I might give it a look.

Yeah, once the cigarette smell finally faded away!

The trailer looks pretty cool indeed:cool:

Love the 1960s look, clothes and stuff..and the 707s:techman:
Difficult to say anything about the writing yet..but the cast seems fine.
Nice to see Christina Ricci there, I hope she is more than just a guest in the pilot:)

Will be interesting if this goes as faithfully to the details of the period, like Mad Men has done;)
Some have already complained that the women in the show are not "curvy enough".
Not sure if that criticism is valid, though..or where all the women like Marilyn Monroe during those day?

Don't worry -- I'm sure the network will get plenty of nitpicking letters from aviation geeks, and that mistake will be corrected in future episodes.

I had zero interest when I first heard about the series, but now I really want to see it mostly for the production work on it. Those sets are nicely done and man, seeing "Pan Am" on that building made me feel like a kid again for a moment. :)

She's in the regular cast.

I know airlines had creepy weight restrictions for stewardesses, so maybe they were all skinnier than would have been considered ideal for the times? Joan from Mad Men would have been way over the limit (not that she'd make a good stewardness, she'd probably dump a drink on the first passenger who got out of line). :rommie:
