Opinions on what this animal might be

Miss Chicken

Little three legged cat with attitude
Admiral
if it is real (which I am not at all sure about)

A STRANGE animal corpse has washed up on a Canadian beach, reviving memories of the infamous "Montauk monster".
Locals in a small Canadian town have been stumped by the appearance of the creature, which was dragged from a lake. It has a long hairy body with bald skin on its head, feet and face, has prompted wild internet speculation that it is a more evolved version of the famous "Montauk monster" which is believed to be either some sort of raccoon, or some creative latex work.
The creature was discovered by two nurses in the town of Kitchenuhmaykoosib in Ontario, Canada, while out on a walk with their dog. When the dog began sniffing in the lake, the two women started investigating, before the dog pulled the dead animal out.
After taking some photographs of the odd animal, the nurses left it alone. When locals decided to go back and retrieve the body, it has disappeared.
The lake has been dragged, but the creature wasn't found.
Rest of story here

whoa! that thing is pretty cool looking. I think it's probably fake though. looks like some kind of sub-human type creature I've seen in a really bad early episode of TNG, or in 'At the Earth's Core'.

Funny how often the carcass of these mystery animals just “vanishes.”
And a couple of days later, some men in black suits showed up and “recommended” that anyone in the area who saw the creature really ought to just forget about it . . .

Another mystery mammal. Yay!

Oh wow--I just realized that it looks a little like my avatar. If my avatar didn't look like a guy in a gorilla suit with a monster face pasted on.

It's a Taran beast.

I don't normally buy into these sorts of stories (and I'm not sure I believe this one, either), but I do find it at least somewhat plausible there could be an unknown species up there. I mean, this is waaay up in the North, where even the Native population is pretty sparse. If you've got a reclusive, aquatic predator, say, I can certainly see it staying pretty much unnoticed, aside from the odd legend. Again, not saying this isn't a fake or something, but it's still an entertaining possibility.

I'm pretty sure that's a bulldog. :(

When an animal starts to decay the gums recede and reveal more tooth than you're accustomed to seeing, and the lower jaw pulls back.

It's definitely not aquatic and it's scrunched nose is a big clue. It couldn't have been in the water more than a few days.

People need to go out and see more dead things so they don't keep coming up with stories about invaders from space because they've never seen a rotting animal before.

I take it the reason we don't see a pic of the whole animal is that you would then see what it was and there would be no "Mystery animal" story for them to print.....must have been a slow news day.

There are four photos of it at this site

I think its body is more like a wolverine than a bulldog, though its nose doesn't look like a wolverine's nose.

Could it be an otter?

I wish one of the nurses had put her hand in the photo to show better the size of the animal.

Looks like a River Otter to me - same nose and facial structure. Even the indent in the head seems common.

Yes after looking at the four photos and this photo of a River Otter I am 90% sure that that is what it is. The River Otter lives in that region and probably is found in that lake.

In that case, maybe it's a rare mutation that crops up every now and then. One of the articles said these things were seen before, only this is the first in 40 years.
