Odo vs. Quark

I never understood why Odo and Quark disliked each other so much but this is what I like about Deep Space 9, seeing Quark and Odo butt heads. In a sense, Quark was known to be a selfish, greedy, often-perverted, con artist. I love Quark though. I remember the one episode where Odo and Quark's runabout crash-landed on a snowy planet, leaving them stranded until they could make it to a mountain peak without killing each other to send a distress signal. I maybe remembering that episode wrong but that's how i remember it. I liked how that episode about them being stranded on a snowy planet forced them to get along and put aside their differences.

I also like the crush Quark had on Jadzia. Too bad for him though that she never liked him and Dukat killed her anyway at the end of Season 6.

In the series finale, "What You Leave Behind" I laughed at the scene when Quark wanted Odo to talk to him one final time and say goodbye. But after Odo said he has nothing to say to him and left, Quark replied saying "That man loves me!" LOVED THAT!

Of course Odo being a security personnel he can't engage in that type of behavior but i would've liked for Odo and Quark to fight. That would be a showdown i'd love to see.

Odo and Quark did fight in The Ascent.

That's the only period they really could have a physical altercation, any other period but when he was solid it would be a short fight. Plus it doesn't fit either of their characters, both hate physical violence.

Quark didn't hate Odo. Quark saw him as a rival, he saw competing with Odo as a game. Odo hated Quark because Odo loves order and Quark disrupted order at every opportunity, also he assaulted his pride being the one he couldn't quite put away. Though he developed a fondness for him as the series went on.

Reading through this... I came up with a bit of an idea.

In a way, Odo really needed someone like Quark around, Quark was to an extent always into something shady, but Odo knew Quark underneath had a heart of gold and he was kind of incompetent, it would allow Odo to keep a tab on some of the illicit goings on, on the station from a person who wouldn't go along with anything that would harm the station, exposing both sides of the coin, the mundane and the potentially harmful.

I may just be talking out my ass there but it's just something that popped into my head suddenly as i was reading through the thread.

Quark may have been a small-time smuggler, but usually would help Odo if something really nasty was going on. In those cases, Quark usually could provide Odo with some extra bits of important information from his semi-criminal contacts and clients. Odo knew that, which I think is why he never really put Quark out of business for good. Quark on the other hand needed Odo to keep him on his toes, as he confessed himself somewhere. Love-hate relationship.

I think Quark helped Odo realize on some level there's more important things than just Order. He is a disorderly creature, and an agent of chaos, which as of episode 1 is all that he despises. But he also has limits and he has empathy, which Odo came to realize when you possess that empathy you're a lesser evil than the orderly killing and subjugation by his people.

Also Odo realized early that if Quark were removed from the situation, he would be replaced by criminals who don't have empathy or limits.

Plus nobody made Quark give Odo pep talks helping him get over Kira in season 4, then later get together with Kira.

one of the many pairings I love DS9 for. Credit to both the writers and the actors for really delivering some wonderfully complex characters.

I recently saw the episode where Odo has to go home because he is sick ; Quark comes up to him as he's leaving and if you go strictly off the text of the dialog , it appears he's gloating over the fact that Odo is leaving. However when you watch it, the subtext tells you Quark is genuinely concerned about Odo and want's reassurance that Odo is coming back.

As a point of clarification, Odo was always concerned more with Justice than Order. It's one of the main differences between him and his Dominion counterparts, in fact.

The novels even speculate that "our" Odo and his MU counterpart may have traded places when they initially traveled through the wormhole.

I'm not a fan of that interpretation. I see the differences between prime universe and mirror universe more on the nurture side of things than the nature side. So in my view it wouldn't matter if they changed places, mirror Odo was a product of his upbringing and prime Odo was a product of his. Odo was embraced by the Bajorans and Kira especially whereas the Founders were betrayed by every solid they ever met.

Fair enough, though the Justice vs. Order thing remains as a prime distinction between Odo and the other Founders. :)

It really wouldn’t have been much of a fight Odo makes mincemeat out of pairs of Klingons, Nausecans, and many others. However human version odo vs quark would def be cool to see. I’d say Odos strength as a changeling rivals Lt Commander Data’s strength. Who tosses Worf around like rag doll on a few occasions and Worf was able to single handedly pick up and press a massive steel beam to free Alexander by himself. (It must have weighed close to a ton)

Was it steel or some futuristic material that weighs less with the same strength? Like carbon fiber for example. (Sorry nitpicking is fun).
